#43 BING WU (丙午)/FIRE HORSE: THE GIFT OF INTENSITY

Put on your sunglasses, folks. Things are about to get hot, hot hot! Legends have it that the Greek God Helios, the god of the Sun, drives a horse-drawn carriage through the sky. It is the perfection depiction for the Bing Wu (丙午) or to give it a more common name, the Fire Horse. Radiant in your intensity, fiercely independent, and brilliantly creative, stand by for a lot of superlatives in this post.

BING WU (丙午) / FIRE HORSE: OVERVIEW

Yours is a Day Master that literally sits on its own Goat Blade. As scary as that may sound, the Goat Blade brings a lot of gifts to the Bing Wu, key of which are your strong will, blazing intelligence and boundless energy.

Additionally, the Bing Wu is also one of the Six Elegant Day Masters, which makes this pillar highly attractive to others. In short, people are literally enthralled and captured by your brilliance.

BING WU (丙午): STRENGTHS

To summarize the Bing Wu into a single sentence, it would be easy to say that this is a pillar that is driven by the compulsion to achieve greatness. Like the self-sustaining sun, this pillar has real drive and power to back up that desire.

When the Bing Wu is at a healthy level, the Bing Wu Day Master is someone with a great zest for life. You are funny, charming, adventurous and compassionate.

This appetite for all that life has to offer comes from the Ding Fire (丁) Rob Wealth star, the source of your ambitions and competitive nature. Like the sun, you simply can’t help but shine brightly for all to see. It’s virtually impossible to ignore a Bing Wu Day Master.

The Ji Earth (己) Hurting Officer stars adds to the originality of the Bing Wu. This is the seat of your creativity. Now at the most basic level of Chinese Metaphysics, the Fire element is always weakened by the Earth element. But in this case, a Ji Earth Hurting Officer star literally adds to the passion of the Bing Wu.

BING WU (丙午): WEAKNESSES TO BE AWARE OF

Because of the sheer brilliance of the Bing Wu pillar, you may exhibit a tendency for aggressive perfectionism. Driven by all that passion, time and time again, you may willingly or perhaps even unknowingly, shoulder all the responsibilities. You have high ideals that you intend to live up to. Consequently, you become very hard on yourself.

When in a negative frame of mind, your optimism becomes pessimism; your perfectionism turns over-critical and compassion may sour into suspicion.

BING WU (丙午): HOW YOU PRESENT

A Bing Wu Day Master can easily come across as a domineering personality. In part, this could be due to an unrecognized desire to stamp your personality on others. This pillar can be relentless. Add the magnanimous nature of the Bing Fire into the mix, and you get someone who is intent on ‘helping’, whether or not that help is needed nor appreciated.

This domineering tendency may manifest through bullying tactics and perhaps even attempts at emotional blackmail.

I realize that this segment can be easily misconstrued. Please understand that my intent is not to belittle. But I feel it is important to know how others would perceive you. This recognition and awareness alone can help smooth your relationship with the world at large.

BING WU (丙午), BUT BETTER

Let’s be honest here. The classical texts are not kind to the Bing Wu Day Master. Why? Because this is an original free spirit that bucks at rules and restrictions. However, these same traits can create an inspirational leader if all that positive energy and enthusiasm is harnessed towards your ambitions. Towards that end, I have a couple of suggestions as follows:

Suggestion 1: Tamper some of those domineering traits through learned diplomacy and tact. I’m mindful, though, that you may not be open to this suggestion. But at least, think about it!

Suggestion 2: The Bing Wu is governed by powerful emotions. So powerful, in fact, that they may cause inertia just when you need some drive to propel you ahead. Learning to detach from those emotions and to view them objectively could save you a lot of unnecessary stress.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#42 YI SI (乙巳)/WOOD SNAKE: THE GIFT OF VERSATILITY

Have you ever visited a tea plantation? Acres upon acres of thriving tea shrubs high upon the mountain top, the leaves waving in the wind, bathed in sunlight. Meet the Yi Si (乙巳) aka the Wood Snake, the only Yi Wood Day Master to sit on the Fire element as the Main Qi. This flexible Yi Wood is a master in versatility.

YI SI (乙巳) / WOOD SNAKE: OVERVIEW

At a glance, this is an unrooted Day Master without much support. It seems to be producing its Bing Fire (丙) Output Star, exerting strength to control its Wu Earth (戊) Wealth Star and defending against its Geng Metal (庚) Officer star.

It seems to be.

However, there is the relationship between the Bing Fire Hurting Officer and the Yi Wood Day Master is, in fact, a reverse production cycle. In other words, this Day Master is actually being produced by its own Output element.

Therefore, the influence of the Bing Fire (丙) will feature strongly in the Yi Si’s strengths and weaknesses.

YI SI (乙巳): STRENGTHS

Let’s examine the elements individually and discover the myriad strengths they bring to you, the Yi Siu Day Master:

  1. As mentioned earlier, the Bing Fire (丙) Hurting Officer Star plays a big role in how the Yi Si functions. This is where the creative energy and optimism of the Yi Si comes from. This element also brings you that ability to present fresh new perspectives on the same-old; same-old.
  2. Far from depleting the strength of the Yi Day Master, the Wu Earth (戊) Direct Wealth adds stability to this pillar. In addition to conveying determination to the Yi Si, it also represents the ability to maximize your resources and your knack for managing finance which in turn attracts many investment opportunities your way.
  3. Finally, the Geng Metal (庚) Direct Officer star injects a hefty dose of practicality and pragmatism to temper the idealism of the Bing Fire Hurting Officer.

YI SI (乙巳): HOW YOU PRESENT

Before we get into the weaknesses, I’d like to highlight a key point on how others are likely to perceive you, the Yi Si Day Master.

The most important thing you need to know is that you have the ability to project the outward persona of someone who is giving and selfless, yet at the same time, work towards your own goals and objectives.

Use this wisely, because a natural extension of this outward persona is that sometimes, you may give the impression of being secretive, a little aloof or perhaps even superior.

YI SI (乙巳): WEAKNESSES TO BE AWARE OF

The presence of both the Hurting Officer and the Direct Officer within the same pillar may indicate a rebellious nature as well as the probability of a lack of self-discipline.

The Bing Fire (丙) Hurting Officer is great when its passions are channelled towards realizing your ambitions. But should the rebellious nature of this star take root, there is a danger that you may cast aside your well-laid plans in pursuit of pipe dreams and castles in the air.

YI SI (乙巳), BUT BETTER

Competitive by nature, accepting help does not come easy for the Yi Si.

Since you are unlikely to seek help, therefore, the only logical suggestion for the Yi Si is to consciously create self-mastery through discipline.

Remember the famous quote from Frank Jackson aka Frank Outlaw (particularly apt in this case):

“Watch your thoughts, they become words
Watch your words, they become actions
Watch your actions, they become habits
Watch your habits, they become character
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny”

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#41 JIA CHEN (甲辰): THE GIFT OF MAXIMUM CAPACITY

Isn’t this a weird title? The Gift of Maximum Capacity? I hear you ask. Look at this tall and majestic tree. Standing proud and loud on the hillside. Without any outside interference, this tree will continue to stretch upwards, growing to its full capacity in life. Imagine that you have this tree inside you (figuratively, of course). It’s your job to nurture it and let it grow. This is what the Jia Chen (甲辰) represents.

With the intro done and dusted, let’s dig into the Jia Chen pillar.

JIA CHEN (甲辰): AN OVERVIEW

Like the example of the tree, the Jia Chen’s life can be summed up as the pursuit of success. Now in this respect, please bear in mind that ‘success’ can mean different things to different people. For some, it may mean a high-flying corporate career. For others it may be the ability to contribute to society and humanity. This definition of ‘success’ is deeply unique and personal to each individual. So as you read this, all I ask is that you refrain from using society’s yardstick of success on yourself. Instead, ask yourself what that success means to you.

Like all Chen (辰) pillars, the Jia Chen carries an aura of nobility and grace. This gracefulness, sensitivity and adaptability is what allows you to move through different social circles with amazing ease.

Similar to all the other Wood Day Masters, the quality of the Wood is determined by the roots. In the case of the Jia Chen, while admittedly this is not a very stable pillar, but what you may lack in stability, you make up with other strengths.

JIA CHEN (甲辰): STRENGTHS

Rooted in your own Rob Wealth star and seated on the Indirect Wealth as the Main Qi and the Direct Resource, the combination of these three makes the Jia Chen more outgoing and more extroverted than some of your other Jia counterparts. This is where your inquisitive nature and engaging personality stems from.

  1. The Yi Wood (乙) Rob Wealth especially, is the star that brings you those go-getter attributes and self-motivation. Because of this Yi Wood, the word procrastination is never in your vocabulary. Instead, it gives you the self-assurance and ambition you need to create your own opportunities instead of waiting for them to come knocking at your door.
  • The Wu Earth (戊) Indirect Wealth Main Qi brings adds more goodies into the bag. The sheer stability of the Wu Earth represents your rock solid determination and ability to power through any obstacles in your way.
  • Most importantly for this Jia Chen, is the Gui Water (癸) Direct Resource. From this star, you inherit your astuteness and capacity to learn from your past mistakes, to keep evolving and growing.

JIA CHEN (甲辰): HOW YOU PRESENT

Again thanks to the Yi Wood (乙) Rob Wealth, you present as someone full of charisma and dynamism. People gravitate to you for help, because they see you as a friend in need who is benevolent, kind and protective. Which is absolutely the case!

However, the Jia Chen may sometimes project an aura of haughtiness and pride. Which leads us to your weaknesses to be aware of…

JIA CHEN (甲辰): WEAKNESSES TO BE AWARE OF

Like most Jia wood Day Masters, your biggest Achilles’ heel might very well be your fear of vulnerability. In your quest to protect that soft inner core, you build walls, you practice denial, and worse, you may even begin to believe and internalize negative thoughts and feelings about yourself.

While perfectly natural, these traits are self-defeating, stunting the Jia Wood instead of allowing it to grow. Building walls may create a safe space for you, but the walls also trap you behind your own emotional defenses.

As a result, the Jia Chen becomes someone who don’t appreciate ‘interference’ and will not tolerate any form of criticism.

JIA CHEN (甲辰), BUT BETTER

Use Your Hidden Fire

While it is not visible to the naked eye, what I want you to know is that there is a hidden wellspring of creativity in the Jia Chen pillar. In the study of Bazi, it is possible for the Wu Earth (戊) Indirect Wealth and the Gui Water (癸) Direct Resource to combine and form the Fire element, which is the Output star for the Jia Day Master.

This Fire element plays a crucial part in my first suggestion – Use Your Hidden Fire. How to do that? Learning to forgive yourself for any lapses big or small, could be one.

But that’s easy to say but difficult to do, isn’t it? Is there an easier way? Yes! Take up hobbies that allow for creative self expression such as art, for example would also bring you that feeling of peace and accomplishment to improve your mood and boost your self-esteem.

Spiritual Grounding

Alternatively, you could work towards achieving stability by grounding yourself through spiritual practices such as deep breathing techniques, meditation, yoga and many others.

Needless to say, the Gui Water (癸) Direct Resource is very important as it keeps nourishing the Jia Wood Day Master. This suggestion seeks to activate the Gui Water in your Day Pillar.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#40 GUI MAO (癸卯)/WATER RABBIT: THE GIFT OF CREATIVITY

This one is so easy to write. With a formation that sits on its own Growth and Nobleman star, along with the Artistic Eating God Formation, what else could the Gui Mao (癸卯) have but the gift of creativity?

GUI MAO (癸卯)/WATER RABBIT: OVERVIEW

Have you ever wandered out into your garden or to a park at sunrise? That magical hour between complete darkness and full sunlight, when the sky is tinged a rosy pink from the early rays of the sun. Look down! See the morning dew glistening on the leaves and flowers? That little drop of water resting gently on the petals is what the Gui Mao pillar represents.

Isn’t it a beautiful image? Just like the morning dew, the Gui Mao Day Master is gentle and just a tiny bit ethereal.

But what lurks beneath this conservative, compassionate and kind persona is what we are really interested in. Because this Artistic Eating God Formation indicates an acute intelligence, extreme clarity of thought, and a Day Master who is unabashedly creative.

But before we talk about making this better, let’s explore the strengths of the Gui Mao pillar.

GUI MAO (癸卯)/WATER RABBIT: STRENGTHS

Gui Water () Day Master

Let’s start with your Gui Water (癸) Day Master. Ethereal, changeable, and mysterious, most Gui Water Day Masters tend to be easy to know, but difficult to comprehend. Think of Gui Water as the clouds – pretty, puffy, white clouds one minute, looming thunderstorms the next! And we have not even met the most mysterious of the Gui Water yet!

This changeability of the Gui Water makes it easy for you to work well with others. But even more importantly, lies a hidden talent that most Gui Water may not be aware of – the ability to subtly change the ideas, beliefs, and emotions of others. This makes the Gui Mao a very astute people-observer.

Yi Wood () Output Star

Your Gui Water Day Master produces your Yi Wood (乙) Output star. In your case, this star represents your eternal quest for knowledge, your active imagination, as well as your idealistic and highly individualistic approach to life.

In fact, one of the stand out characteristics of the Gui Mao Day Master is your openness to knowledge from any source. Constantly exploring, the more you learn, the more creative you become. But more than that, your Gui Water represents emotions and ideas. Your Eating God represents effective thinking.

Put the whole picture together, and you get a Day Master who excels at coming up with fast, effective, spur-of-the-moment, and out-of-the-box solutions. This means, that you are not the type to absorb and regurgitate information. Instead, the more knowledgeable you are, the better you become at creating new ideas or solutions.

Mao () or Rabbit Branch

And then we have your Mao (卯) or Rabbit branch. This is your personal nobleman star. Technically, it is called the Day Noble. When there is nobility in the chart, it typically means that you have access to support from other people. But if you want to take it to the next level, think of it this way – you have the capacity to help others.

But what or how does this nobility pan out? Specifically, in your case as a Gui Mao Day Master, it typically pans out as access to information. Multiple sources of information. The larger your network of information, the easier it is for your Artistic Eating God Formation to create new lines of thinking and solution. Nothing delights the Gui Mao more than the ability to come up with new ideas and new approaches.

GUI MAO (癸卯)/WATER RABBIT: HOW YOU PRESENT

Like all Gui Day Masters, the first impression you give is as someone who is friendly and able to get along with anyone. Likability factor is high, given that this Gui Water Day Master sits on the Mao (卯) Branch which is also a Peach Blossom star.

However, the Gui Mao can seem to be just a little cold or detached. Some might even go as far as to label you a ‘diva’. Here’s why: while the Gui Mao Day Master is friendly, you are also extremely discerning. The Gui Mao pillar does not deal with blind acceptance. In other words, it will not tolerate fools!

GUI MAO (癸卯)/WATER RABBIT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Beware the negative thoughts. This will tend to happen when Water energies are particularly strong. In this case, it is a matter of tweaking your internal conversations to turn the negative into the positive.

The morning dew needs something to rest upon – usually, it’s the leaves and petals. This scenario denotes the sense of belonging that is always sought by the Gui Mao. You demand perfection in your relationships. But there is no such thing as a perfect relationship! As a result, please be aware that this elusive sense of belonging may inadvertently translate into an excessive attachment to the material world. When your sense of self-happiness and self-satisfaction is driven by what you have instead of what you create, it’s time to pull the hand-brakes!

GUI MAO, BUT BETTER

Even though the Gui Mao sits only on a single hidden stem, it seems to be already loaded with gifts. So how to make it better?

This Yi (乙)Wood Eating God must be protected at all costs. In this case, one recommendation is for you to learn better management skills. It could be time management, or people management, or let’s just put it under a single umbrella and call it resource management.

I know this sounds counter-intuitive. Why am I proposing a recommendation that seems to constrain creativity instead of unleashing it? On the contrary, better time management helps you free up more hours for creativity and helps you stay focused. Better resource management helps you prioritize and improve your creative output.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

THE HIDDEN SUN IS 1! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

On May 10th 2020, I posted my very first article in this blog with much trepidation and anticipation. It’s been a year since! The Hidden Sun is 1! So I want to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU for all your support.

Alright, to be completely honest, I’m not one for dates and anniversaries. I only remembered because WordPress sent me an invoice to renew the blog hosting! Haha!

So I thought I should at least mark this occasion with a special post this week – to thank you, yes YOU, for your support over the past 365 days.

I’ve learnt a lot since that first post. There has been some sacrifices too. But I’ve gained more in return.

First, The Thank Yous!

Many people have played a part in this journey of mine. It’s impossible to thank everyone individually. But in general, I’d like to say…

  • Thank you to my friends for your kind encouragement and support.
  • To my readers. I am grateful for the chance to serve and share my knowledge. I hope you’ve enjoyed visiting my blog.
  • To my clients, thank you again for the chance to serve. Quite a few have blurred the boundaries between clients to new friends.
  • To my boss, thank you for being supportive of this side gig.

Isn’t It Amazing What 2 Hours Can Do?

Looking into my blog analytics, I was astounded that in the past year, somehow while holding down a challenging full time career, I have managed to post 84 articles on this blog and 42 videos in YouTube. I’ve lost count of the Facebook Live #Talk3Talk4 that I do every week with my good friends Shamaine and Jonath. (Cue a bit of self-promotion: we share Metaphysics knowledge live on Facebook every Wednesday at 9:15pm MYT here. Come join us if you have the time).

Somehow, all that was accomplished, just by committing 2 hours every single day. The ancients got it right by splitting the day into 2-hour segments. 1 hour is barely enough to get something decent done. But 2 hours is just nice.

Seriously, try it for a month. But I think it’s important to list down what you have completed – no matter how small. By the end of the month, you get to look back at how much progress you would have gained. Motivation X10!!

Yes, I’ve certainly expanded my capacity within this past year. It’s gotten to the point where when I give myself a rare ‘day off’ (aka, I-heart-Yang-Goong-Disaster-Days), I find myself feeling bored! Self-punishment, anyone? Haha!

The Principle of Ying and Yang – The Price I’ve Paid

Of course, this doesn’t come without a ‘price’. Before this journey, I was a TV addict. TV-bingeing wasn’t just a thing, it was MY thing!

But since I started this side gig, the idiot box has gone silent. Actually, it broke down and I never even bothered to replace it.

But I’ve Gained So Much More

Sacrificing the television set on the altar of multiple income pipelines was a very small price to pay, I admit. And I’ve gained so much more!

I am grateful that I have somehow created a self-sustaining side business that I hope will grow exponentially as I continue to pour more efforts into it.

I am excited at how I have expanded my horizons, connected with a new group of amazing people.

Most importantly, I’ve learnt so much, not just about Chinese Metaphysics, but also about running a small business.

To tell you the truth, in 2020, my Bazi chart was full of negative stars. But defiantly, I decided to start my side gig then. Because I knew I would make mistakes. I knew I would run into problems. Might as well get them over with when times are bad, I figured. Yes, I can be greedy that way.

The Journey Continues

Of course, I will continue to post articles. After all, I’m only halfway through the 60 Pillars! This OCD Bing Fire thinks that a commitment is a commitment. It must be honoured! I look forward to sharing more insights and more value as I grow in my knowledge. I hope you will stay with me as I continue on this journey. Let’s grow together!

#39 REN YIN (壬寅)/WATER TIGER: THE GIFT OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Remember the Ren Chen pillar (壬辰) pillar with its poetic name ‘Ren Saddling The Dragon’s Back’? Well, it’s time to meet the ‘Ren Saddling The Tiger’s Back’ – the Ren Yin (壬寅). Typically gregarious and visibly intelligent, there is always a layer of mystery lurking beneath the surface that makes the Ren Yin Day Master a very intriguing person to know.

REN YIN (壬寅)/WATER TIGER: OVERVIEW

Think of a river, winding its way through a dense and dark jungle. Something like… the Amazon river, and you would be on the right track. Think of how this river flows in a strong yet controlled manner, but always heading in one direction. Come hell or high water, this river is intent upon reaching the sea! This river will flow over any obstacles, rush headlong down any heights, break down any barriers, as long as it meets its objective. That’s how strong the Ren Yin can be.

REN YIN (壬寅)/WATER TIGER: STRENGTHS

In Bazi, we like it when the Qi produces each other in a single pillar. We can see this phenomenon clearly in the Ren Yin where the Ren Day Stem produces the Jia Wood Eating God in the Branch which then fuels the Bing Fire Indirect Wealth that eventually creates the Wu Earth 7 Killings. In classical Bazi, this is an indicator of potential wealth and prosperity.

  1. Ren Water Day Master. Ren Day Masters typically come equipped with naturally good instinct for people (whether you acknowledge it or not). The Ren Yin pillar calls up an image of the Ren Water being ‘controlled’. Unlike the splashier Ren pillars, yours is one where the Water element is more ‘orderly’. Externally, this presents as someone who is even-tempered. But the depths of this river cannot be underestimated. You are highly sensitive to changes in your environment, like the river negotiating the rapids to reach the sea, you have a subtle way of manipulating situations to your advantage.
  2. You, the Ren Day Master, sits on a Jia Wood Eating God. What gifts does it bring? Creativity, for one. The Ren Yin Day Master tends to be very well-informed. There is a thirst for knowledge in this pillar as well. This is also where you place a high premium on your relationships. Work-life balance is a must for you! It’s probably one of your non-negotiables.
  3. But before I have you thinking of the Ren Yin as a self-flagellating, self-punishing weirdo… luckily, we have the very useful and optimistic Bing Fire Indirect Wealth to bring some warmth and happiness. The nature of the Bing Fire is routine-driven. It has persistency. Here in the Ren Yin, it represents the ability to bounce back from setbacks, just like how the sun always rises after it sets.
  4. Finally, the Wu Earth 7 Killings star brings stability, pragmatism and objectivity to the Ren Yin Day Master. This is a solid base which endows the Ren Yin with its risk-assessment capacities and its ability to confront and embrace new challenges and adventures.

If the Ren Yin sounds amazing so far, that’s because it truly is! Now, if only I can convince the Ren Yin to accept that fact.

REN YIN (壬寅)/WATER TIGER: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Ren Water is the star of connectivity. It represents your ability to connect with people of all types and stripes. Additionally, Ren Water represents wisdom.

Along with the progressive leanings of the Jia Wood, the optimistic rays of the Bing Fire as well as the ability to generate trust from the Wu Earth, this pillar literally projects an outward persona of intelligence and charisma.

Your friends and social circle will know you as someone who is resourceful, knowledgeable and objective – the best counsel for those in need of advice.

REN YIN (壬寅)/WATER TIGER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF + REN YIN, BUT BETTER

If there is one weakness in this pillar, it is this tendency towards feelings of inadequacy and self-criticism. Let me explain why.

For your Jia Wood Eating God to be useful, it needs to be chopped by Metal which represents Resource for the Ren Day Master. This Metal, is the missing link to support the Ren Day Master as it continuously produces the Eating God, Indirect Wealth and 7 Killings in the Branch. This ‘missing’ Metal is also the reason why you can be such a tough task master towards yourself. At times, you may find it difficult to feel contentment in your achievements. You always want to do better. As such, it is normal to have a Ren Yin continuously striving towards self-improvement.

Just because it’s missing from the Day Pillar doesn’t mean that Metal is completely absent in your chart. Even if there is zero Metal, luckily, you don’t need to actually have Metal in your Bazi Chart to develop a love for life-long learning. Being aware of this need, and subsequently, ensuring that learning becomes a part of your day’s routine, is good enough. Pick up a new skill every year! Hone your observational skill!. Just 1% improvement every day, and by the end of a year’s worth of intentional learning, you would have made progress.

So give yourself a break, Ren Yin. There’s no need to be so hard on yourself. You’re further along than you think.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#38 XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: THE GIFT OF UNIQUENESS

Observant, intuitive and possessing of a strong streak for self-reliance, the Xin Chou (辛丑) Day Master also comes blessed with a charming personality that gives you the competitive edge. And more, the Xin Chou Day Master has the potential to be unique, one-of-a-kind, stand out in a crowd. In other words, you dare to be different.

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: OVERVIEW

We all know what gold looks like. But how many of us have seen gold in its raw form? This unpolished raw metal in its original form, newly excavated from the ground, unpolished, solid and pure represents your personality. A diamond in the rough.

This is the Xin Chou (辛丑), which brings the gift of uniqueness.

But, wouldn’t you agree that, to the untrained eye, gold in its original form will seem no different from any other piece of rock? So, grab a loupe! Let’s take a closer look.

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: STRENGTHS

Xin Chou Bazi
  1. Parked under your Xin Metal Day Master is a resourceful Ji Earth (己) Resource star. This star brings the gift of astute perception, sharp observation, swift thinking, and the ability to be a great ‘life learner’.  Seated on your resource star also signifies that resource is abundant in your life. This is where the Xin Chou can be very self-reliant. However, please understand that self-reliance is not about shouldering every hardship that comes your way.
  2. Instead, when your Ji Earth (己) Resource Star produces your Xin Metal (辛) Companion star, this brings about an inherent appreciation for your own self-worth, self-expression and self-acceptance. In other words, this represents your high level of self-confidence. You dare to be different! Raw gold knows its own worth. It doesn’t care if the untrained eye recognizes it or not. This sense of self-acceptance is the one thing that differentiates the Xin Chou from all the other Xin variants. With your self-confidence bolstered by this rooted Friend star, the Xin Chou has the potential or the ability, to create a unique identity for yourself which helps you stand out of the crowd.
  3. Your Gui Water (癸) Output star gives you the capacity for fluid imagination, creativity, innovation, and inventiveness.

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: HOW YOU PRESENT

Given this level of self-confidence, the Xin Chou (辛丑) Day Master will typically present with a friendly and magnetic personality. You love meeting new people, and you enjoy magnetizing new friends into your life. After all, the Xin Metal is the star of networking!

All your relationships are meaningful to you. But for those lucky enough to get into your inner circle, they will find in you, a true and loyal friend who is genuinely protective and supportive.

(Side note: From a physical point of view, Xin Chou ladies are usually graceful, slender, and drop dead gorgeous.)

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Be careful that strong sense of loyalty. It can be both an asset and a liability. Be careful to what or to whom you gift this loyalty to.

Staying loyal in a situation that is emotionally or mentally damaging will erode anyone’s self-confidence, but the Xin Chou is particularly vulnerable to this. Because when the negative thinking turns inwards, you literally end up attacking yourself.

And where would all that self-criticism get you? Absolutely nowhere.

XIN CHOU, BUT BETTER

So how can we maximize the uniqueness of the Xin Chou? I have a few of suggestions.

Learn To Be Observant

Crafting and carving raw gold into a thing of beauty that is universally admired requires time, effort, precision, and yes, discipline. One wrong move could shatter the ore and ruin the value of the precious metal. But in the hands of an expert craftsman, the Xin Metal’s inner glow becomes apparent for all to see. But before the craftsman begins to wield his tools, the first thing he does… is observe. He looks at the natural contours of the metal, its inherent shape and feels its potential.

This level of observation can be learnt, especially if you are a Xin Chou Day Master. It’s about learning to trust your intuition with regards to the people that come your way, learning to pick up non-verbal cues to discern who will have a positive impact in your life and vice versa.

This skill is particularly important for the Xin Chou, which leads us to the second suggestion…

Surround Yourself with The Right Friends

Surround yourself with the friends who contribute positively to your self-esteem will greatly enhance your ability to be self-reliant.

And Finally, Learn the Rewards Of Mental Discipline

Into each life, a little rain must fall. For each Metal Day Master, a little Fire is needed to mould and shape. With resource so easily available to the Xin Chou Day Master, learning the rewards of mental discipline will help maximize the use of the resources at hand.

Discipline is like a muscle. It can be trained. But again, don’t get me wrong. This is not about being hard on yourself. It’s not about forcing yourself to work crazy hours. In this case, it is about learning to see the big picture and exercise restraint in adversity. In other words, it’s about tampering the overcritical and impatient side of the Xin Metal.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#37 GENG ZI (庚子)/METAL RAT: THE GIFT OF NONCONFORMITY

A sword sheathed in ice. Metal submerged and distorted by water. A symbol of untapped power. This pillar, the Geng Zi (庚子), carries the gift of nonconformity.

Wait, you say… is nonconformity a gift? Of course! If you know how to use it.

GENG ZI (庚子)/METAL RAT: OVERVIEW

The Geng Zi (庚子) combines the execution power of the Geng Metal with the shrewdness of the Gui Water Hurting Officer. Another way to look at this pillar is to visualize the Geng Metal as a sharp mind and a pragmatic approach to life and the Gui Water as a deep sense of curiosity. Either way, this combination of Ying and Yang in one pillar can result in a rather perplexing combination of traits – stubborn and irritable but also generous and soft-hearted. In other words, the Geng Zi personality is one that can be rather difficult to decode. Hence, the reputation as an eccentric nonconformist.

GENG ZI (庚子)/METAL RAT: STRENGTHS

Geng Zi Bazi
  1. At the end of the day, a Geng Metal (庚) is still a Geng Metal. This is an element of toughness. You are naturally goal-oriented, ambitious and have the innate willpower to become energized in the face of roadblocks and setbacks. In other words, you are not easily deterred.
  2. But where does the nonconformity come in? According to psychologist Dr. David Weeks, these five traits are present in every eccentric person. Let’s see how these five traits stack up against the natural attributes of the Geng Zi… particularly your Gui Water (癸) Output star:
    • Non-conforming attitude – Check! Seated on your own Hurting Officer star, the Geng Zi will naturally be more vocal and rebellious against the norms
    • Highly motivated by curiosity – Check! Again, the Gui Water is nothing but infinitely curious
    • Creative – Check! The Hurting Officer, being an output star, brings street-smarts and creativity to this equation
    • Idealistic – Check! Idealism is the corner stone of the two output stars Eating God and Hurting Officer
    • Opinionated and outspoken – Check! Hurting Officer anybody? So, it’s now obvious that your Gui Water Hurting Officer is the one that brings a lot of the non-contrarian attitudes to the Geng Zi.

GENG ZI (庚子)/METAL RAT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The Rat branch, being a restless and volatile body of energy, makes the Geng Zi a little more impatient than the rest. There are traits here that suggest you crave external validation and instant gratification. There is a constant need to feel appreciated, and when you don’t get that external validation, your self-confidence will start to falter. When that happens, you get all suspicious and defensive.

Here’s the problem. When you depend on others to build you up, you give them the power to break you down. Instead of waiting for others to appreciate you, learn to appreciate yourself! Easier said than done, I know. But try!

GENG ZI (庚子)/METAL RAT: HOW YOU PRESENT

Larger than life! The Geng Zi naturally fears appearing weak and insecure to others. So you tend to mask those internal insecurities by doubling down on the external persona. The first impression you give others may be one of a diva-like personality with a touch of arrogance. I know this sounds negative, but, it is divas who accumulate fans! Therefore, learn to work this to your advantage!

GENG ZI, BUT BETTER

There are, of course, pros and cons to nonconformity. First let’s examine the advantage. Psychiatric studies have found that eccentrics or nonconfirmists tend to be happier individuals. The logic is that, when you no longer march to the beat of other drums, when you don’t measure yourself against the yardstick of others, the person is naturally happier in himself or herself.

The price of nonconformity, however, will be the loss of security and social acceptance. If this price is too high for the Geng Zi Day Master, a good way to ‘unleash’ the power of the Geng Metal is to learn self-discipline and the willpower to take action. You see, the Hurting Officer can be a bit of an all-talk-no-action type of star. The Geng Zi is at its best when they are fired up with motivation as they commit to a goal. The basis of this suggestion is to use focus and direction to further hone the natural talents of the Geng Zi on their goals instead of wasting their potential on rectifying petty obstacles. In other words, learn to change what you can, let go of situations that you cannot alter.

But as I said earlier, this is merely a suggestion. It is to be deployed only if you, the Geng Zi Day Master, feel that there is a need to enhance your power. To me, there is no harm in being a nonconformist. As long as your eccentricity doesn’t hurt anyone else, a bit of nonconformity, when used deliberately, can signal a strong self-confidence and greater competence.

Remember when Mark Zuckerberg wore a hoodie to meet investors before Facebook’s first public offering? How’s that for positive nonconformity?

Of course, whenever a Day Master sits on its own Hurting Officer, the classic texts will have plenty to say about this scenario… most of them negative especially when it comes to the marital happiness of a female Geng Zi Day Master. But let’s not forget that these classics are written on the background of a society that is deeply infused by Confucianism. Today, society’s acceptance and admiration for eccentrics have changed for the better.

So you’re a tad bit eccentric. So what?

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#36 JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: THE GIFT OF YOUR VOICE

Witty, resourceful, bursting with energy, the Ji Hai (己亥) Day Master has one physical attribute that wins against everyone else. Consider it your superpower. It’s your voice! Ji Hai Day Masters are usually blessed with an enthralling and mesmerizing voice. But of course, you are more than just your voice.

Care to know more? Read on…

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: OVERVIEW

Externally, the Ji Hai (己亥) presents as a very idyllic picture – endless waves, lapping gently against the golden sands; coconut trees swaying elegantly in the breeze. Picturesque, isn’t it?

The Ji Hai Day Master is certainly blessed with a potent combination of both beauty and brains. Like the beautiful picture that the pillar presents, you, the Ji Hai Day Master, possess mesmerizing beauty along with a warm and exuberant personality. Looking at the picture alone, you would most likely think that the Ji Hai Day Master is one who is good-natured, easy-going, someone who goes with the flow, maybe even a little lackadaisical.

To a point, you would be right. But did you know, that beneath that romantic exterior lies a very capable Day Master with the gift for planning and hard work?

Let’s talk about your strengths…

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: STRENGTHS

Ji Hai Bazi
  1. Let’s start with your Ji Earth (己) Day Master. Like all Ji Earth, you are resourceful and productive. If I were a hiring manager, I would be delighted to have a Ji Hai working for me, especially a young Ji Hai Day Master who is just starting out in his or her career. Why? Because the Ji Hai is malleable and teachable. In other words, unlike the more stubborn Day Masters, the Ji Hai Day Master is open to external suggestions and therefore, will continue to expand and grow his or her potential exponentially.
  2. This trait of being teachable is amplified by the presence of your Jia Wood (甲) Officer star which at once ‘controls’ and ‘combines’ with your Ji Earth Day Master. This star is particularly important in the Ji Hai pillar. It creates the stability you need to become more self-confident. At the same time, it represents the opportunity for your hard work to help you gain authority, status, and recognition.
  3. If the Ji Hai sounds very pleasant so far, hang on a second. Never discount the fact that this nurturing and compassionate Ji Earth sits on an innovative and forceful Ren Water (壬) Wealth star. This star holds the most influence when it comes to the planning skills of the Ji Hai. After all, the Direct Wealth literally governs planning and execution!

Planning skills is one of the cornerstones for success. And here’s the rub. Not everyone does it naturally like the Ji Hai. Many of us are visionary big thinkers. The Ji Hai, on the other hand, makes big plans and turns those grand schemes into smaller rational and realistic steps – all thanks to the Ren Water Direct Wealth that you sit on.

4. Despite the absence of any of your output stars, the Ji Hai Day Master can also be very creative. This comes from the smooth interactions within the Hai/Pig branch itself where the Water produces the Wood. In your case, this represents your Direct Wealth producing your Direct Officer, which translates into a powerful imagination, and the energy to go after your creative goals.

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

But what about your vulnerabilities? Each of your strengths mentioned so far, will have a darker side. After all, that’s the concept of Yin and Yang.

Firstly, your vaunted malleability. Along with that easy-going attitude comes the tendency to be a people-pleasure.

Next, the presence of your Jia Wood (甲) Officer star may be important to create stability in your pillar, but at the same time, it could cause you to create too many rules for yourself, and ultimately, impending your own growth.

Finally, while the Ji Hai is usually even-tempered, you do have some trigger points – particularly when things don’t go to plan. This is especially true at a time when your Ren Water (壬) Wealth star gets out of control.

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: HOW YOU PRESENT

Generous, confident, and honourable, your personal brand is that of someone who is steady and even-tempered. Aside from resourcefulness, the Ji Hai pillar holds a great deal of integrity. So you start off on the right footing as the first impression you give is of someone who is trustworthy.

On the flip side, the Ji Hai pillar tends to try to be everything for everyone. If you are aware of this trait, it can be kept under control.

JI HAI, BUT BETTER

Being Ji Hai, But Better is almost a no-brainer. Since you have been given an outstanding gift in your vocal cords, doesn’t it make sense to get some vocal training and build up your vocal image? Our voices and how we speak literally carry an image of us. You have been given a natural advantage in this area, so I’d use it to the max.

Lastly, strive to use your planning abilities to create work-life balance. This is something that is particularly important for the Ji Hai. Why? Because the golden sand of this beach is constantly in danger of being eroded by the sea. Therefore, this Day Master needs time for self-care. Otherwise, you end up over-exerting yourself.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#35 WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: THE GIFT OF STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS

As one of the four Fui Gong pillars, the Wu Xu is just as tough and hardy as any one of the other three. It’s one stand-out characteristic? Straightforwardness.

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: OVERVIEW

What happens when you stack two mountains on top of each other? It calls to mind someone well-grounded, stable, and determined. That’s exactly the image that the Wu Xu (戊戌) pillar creates. The classical texts describe the Wu Xu as an edgy and rocky mineral mountain, tough on the outside, passionate on the inside.

It sounds unattractive, I know. But there is a stark beauty in the Wu Xu.

Let’s think about this for a second. If we were to describe the Wu Xu as a dormant volcano, what comes to mind is a hard-surfaced mineral mountain dotted with craters. This same edgy look creates a Day Master who is just as edgy and straightforward.

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: STRENGTHS

There are abilities aplenty in the Wu Xu. Seated on your own Direct Resource, Friend and Hurting Officer stars, this Day Master is ably supported by the drive of your Ding Fire Direct Resource Star, the practical determination of its Wu Earth Friend Star, and the subtle magnetism conveyed by your Xin Metal Hurting Officer star.

  1. Your Ding Fire (丁) Resource Star brings the gift of ambition, rationality and objectivity. Bolstered by your Ding Fire Resource star, the Wu Xu naturally wants to achieve something substantial. You have a fine grasp of details and you are a firm believer of learning by experience. In fact, the Wu Xu naturally likes knowledge. To be more specific, the Wu Xu likes to hoard knowledge.
  2. The more knowledgeable you are, the more self-confident you become – as seen by how your Ding Fire Resource Star produces your Wu Earth (戊) Day Master and Companion star. Proud and alert, this Companion star brings a natural flair for leadership, aided by your willingness to listen to opposing points of view. For all your toughness and straight talking, you enjoy working in a congenial atmosphere and will have little patience with pettiness and power plays.
  3. Finally, your Xin Metal (辛) Output star brings a desire for recognition. The gift of straightforwardness? It lies here. In the eyes of the Wu Xu, telling truth to power is the best way to deal with any situation. Beating around the bush is merely a waste of precious time and resources. Being the hardy person you are, you honestly believe that coddling is bad for your health and tough love is the only love that matters. The Wu Xu will never be the person who lives in denial.

But remember, the truth may be powerful, it can also be painful…

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

For the Wu Xu Day Master, your biggest challenge is learning to tell the truth in a way that is more acceptable to your audience.

Additionally, when you put two mountains together into a single pillar, your first instinct will be to hoard information. The Wu Xu will have the tendency to dole out information piece by piece on a need-to-know basis. The problem here, though, is that it often creates an aloof exterior where trust is hard to come by. Because people sense that you are holding back! That you are being reticent on purpose.

Which leads us to…

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Wu Xu typically presents with a steely, stoic, almost aloof persona. This is something that the Wu Xu Day Master must always be aware of. Whether or not you intend to ‘fix’ this aloof persona, is up to you. By now, surely you would have figured out a way to make the aloofness work for you.

But beneath that steely exterior…

… lies a soft inner core that the Wu Xu would protect at all costs. The Wu Xu is intuitive by nature and as a result, can be rather sensitive to criticism. The best way around this is for the Wu Xu Day Master to develop a more rational perspective and cultivate a deep inner faith in your abilities.

WU XU, BUT BETTER

With great power comes great responsibilities. Life is frequently less easy or smooth sailing for someone with so many abilities. Such is the journey for the Wu Xu. A life full of challenges that only you can tame. In Bazi consults, when we see a Fui Gong pillar like the Wu Xu, we know that this person is destined for great achievements. All you need to do, is cast away those self-doubts and learn to reframe (not silence) your own internal critic.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.
