Using your strongest Structure and Element is just one way to identify a suitable side gig. Another method is to use your top abilities. In Bazi parlance, this is called the 10 Gods (why? Because naming them as the 10 Abilities is so not poetic).

You can either put all the information together to create something uniquely you, or, if confused, just pick the one that feels right.

The 10 Gods Profile and Related Side Gigs

Friend (F). Anything that deals with one-on-one or peer-to-peer interactions. This could include personal development, affiliate marketing, acting as brokers or middle man.
Rob Wealth (RW). Anything that deals with one-to-many. Some ideas: network marketing, community manager, events facilitator, insurance advisor.
Eating God (EW). Any gig that allows you to create something out of nothing. Write, draw, create, content creation, cook, design… the list is virtually endless.
Hurting Officer (HO). Any gig that allows you to capitalize on attention. Become an influencer for a particular subset of people, copywriting, entertain, perform, and speak!
Direct Wealth (DW). Anything that allows you to use your planning and execution skills. Be a book-keeper, a home or pet-sitter, money manager, or project manager.
Indirect Wealth (IW). The Indirect Wealth is a serial starter, addicted to the thrill of a new project. Unlike the Direct Wealth which is more consistent, the Indirect Wealth needs more variety. Consider helping other entrepreneurs get their business off the ground. Alternatively, you can keep an online store where you source products to sell. Become an intrapreneur within your own organization. If all else fails, you can always consider becoming a scammer (kidding!).
Direct Officer (DO). Any gig that allows you to make full use of your team centric perspective. Ideas include coaching or personal trainer. Alternatively, both the Direct Officer and 7 Killings profile tend to be pretty good with their hands. So creating craft to sell may be a possibility. Or even becoming a handyman!
7 Killings (7K). The 7 Killings profile has a strong ability to trouble-shoot. Becoming a paid product tester or reviewer may be an option. Another way to use the 7 Killings profile? Get a gig as a business development consultant whose task is to open up new markets. One more idea would be to create a side gig as an event organizer.
Direct Resource (DR). Since the Direct Resource is all about data, then sell data and information. Teach courses. Become a data analyst. Tutor!
Indirect Resource (IR). Blessed with strong intuition, Indirect Resource profiles make great therapists, coaches, consultants or counsellors.

The Resource Structure deals with the world through information and data. Analytical, methodical, and happiest when surrounded by a sea of information, finding side gigs for the Resource Structure in today’s over-connected and data-driven world is literally a walk in the park.

Suitable Side Gigs For The Resource Structure

Keyword: Information

If the biggest element in your chart is Wood, and it happens to be your Resource Structure, monetize the dissemination of information as a side gig. Create courses. Learn to repackage information. In other words, teach!

Fire as your Resource element? Consider creating (and selling) cheat-sheets, templates, and infographics. Basically, you can earn money by breaking down complex information into palatable, presentable and easy to consume bytes.

Of the 5 Elements, Earth has the largest capacity to store information. If Earth is your Resource, becoming a part time analyst may be viable choice for you. Surrounded by data, you may be as happy as a clam.

Resource Structure individuals tend to move at a more deliberate pace. Analytical and methodical, Resource Structure individuals typically will not act until they have all their bullets stacked up and their ducks lined up in a row. However, if your Resource Structure happens to be Metal, you will tend to move faster than the rest of your other Resource counterparts. Any gig that involves analyzing data and turning information into immediate strategies and tactics could be something worth exploring.

What happens if your Resource is Water? Here, you will have the same opportunities as those with Wood Resource Structures. Teach! Basically, Water represents wisdom, emotions, and thinking capacity. Therefore, you too could be looking into the business of dissemination wisdom and knowledge.

Just as reliable as their Wealth counterparts, the Influence Structure modus-operandi is to work within systems, processes, and rules. This is a viewpoint that places particular emphasis on being team centric. Very caring of others, the Influence Structure individual makes some of the best coaches.

Suitable Side Gigs For The Influence Structure

Keyword: Control

Given the Wood element’s propensity for growth, coupled with the Influence Structure’s acceptance for the need for self-discipline, becoming a life coach or organizational coach will be a great market for your side gig.

If your Influence Element is Fire, you could also consider becoming a personal development coach. Yes, much like the life coach, a hefty dose of inspiration and motivation goes a long way to allow your clients to be open to the discipline required to effect change in their lives.

The Earth Element has the ability to bring people together – to work together, or play together. Therefore, becoming a team-building consultant or coach may be the right fit for you. Alternatively, given the durability of the Earth element, succession planning may be a good niche for you.

When your Influence element is Metal, your ability to take pain and endure hardship will make you a great personal trainer!

If Water is the strongest element in your chart, and it happens to be your Influence element, any gig that controls the flow of people, goods, products, or information may be the right one for you.

Disciplined, independent, dependable, and accountable, the Wealth Structure is also an easy one where side gigs are concerned. All we need to do is to leverage on your awesome ability to make things happen. In your hands, projects are inevitably delivered on time and on budget. Therefore, becoming project planners, virtual assistants, financial consultants are some of the ideas for the Wealth Structure.

However, there is one caution. It is normal for the Wealth Structure people to under-value your superpower – that awesome organizational talent. Why? Because it comes so easy that you assume everyone else can do it too.

A Wealth Structure that is of the Wood Element is a natural multi-tasker. Since you are so good at juggling multiple balls in the air, a stint as a virtual assistant may be just the thing for you.

Fire is all about transformations. If your Wealth Structure is Fire, any side gig that involves managing transformation or change could be something that you can consider.

Earth, on the other hand, talks about abundance and consistency. With an Earth Wealth Structure, you are the rock upon which others lean upon to get things done. Consider exploring gigs such as project planners that require long-tail planning. Basically, your projects should ideally last more than a few months instead of quick flashes here and there.

Metal is the element of responsibility. Metal is also the element representing finance. If your strongest structure happens to be the Wealth Structure which is of the Metal Element, becoming a financial consultant or debt-restructuring/management consultant may be the right fit for you.

Wealth Structures that are of the Water Element has a talent for sniffing out money and opportunities. Because of that, fund-raising side gigs may work well for you.

Suitable Side Gigs For The Output Structure

Keyword: Create

Given the Wood Element’s ability to diversify, your best bet as an Output Structure with the Wood Element, would be to create as many Intellectual Properties as possible. Always wanted to write an e-book or two? What’s stopping you now?

If your Output Structure is Fire, creating joy may be your thing. I’m talking Happynomics, people! Some ideas for a Fire Output Structure includes becoming a social-media manager, perhaps a motivational speaker, or better yet, turn your cooking skills into dollars by selling your best foods online.

As always, Earth is about stability. With Earth as the element of your Output Structure, creating something that you can build consistently may be the key. You could consider starting a blog or vlog.

If your Output Element is Metal, focus on your masterpiece. Polish that one idea to perfection and then sell it at a high worth. Because it will take time for your masterpiece to come to fruition. But be wary of your perfectionist streak, tho!

Selling your ideas or strategies may just be your calling if your Output Element is Water. But for this idea to work, you really must first learn to brand yourself.

In today’s hyper-connected world, creating a side gig has never been easier. Thanks to technology, we now have the capacity to connect with and serve people from around the globe.

A great way to choose a side gig is to use the strongest element and structure in your Bazi Chart. At this juncture, I must warn you that different practitioners may have differing views on this. Some would choose your ‘Useful God’. Others may go for your ‘Wealth Element’. But for me, I would choose the Strongest Structure and Strongest Element. Why? Because that is your field of maximum return.

But having said that, in an actual consult, this is the point where we will be brainstorming as I outline the various options to see which resonates with you. Is it Useful God? Is it Wealth? Or should it be the strongest Structure and Element?

Suitable Side Gigs for the Companion Structure

Regardless of whether you are an extrovert or introvert, people-management skills is part and parcel of the Companion Structure modus-operandi. You have a natural grasp of what people want, what their strengths are, and what their weaknesses may be. I won’t even bother asking you how you do it. You can’t even explain it. You just do. Unfortunately, this exacerbates any extrovert/introvert tendencies you may have. The extrovert becomes more outgoing; while the introvert, having gleaned the essence of what people want, may become withdrawn.

If you are a Companion Structure person, any side gig that involves people may be the right one for you. You could be a broker, middleman, a counsellor, or even a consultant.

Side Gig Keyword: Connect

If your Companion Structure is Wood, consider being a connector or a bridge between communities. You could create a special niche for yourself by just providing service for a particular group of people. Example: rainbow merch for the LGBTQ+ community?

Fire inspires and transforms. If your Companion Structure is Fire, any service or product that inspires joy, transformation, and tech could be right up your ally. Digital transformation consultant, perhaps?

Earth governs stability, security and trust. With Earth as the element of your Companion Structure, being a part of the expert market may be the ticket for you. Rent out your knowledge, reputation and expertise. Alternatively, because Earth seeks stability, being a consultant for insurance, wellness and security could also appeal to you.

If your Companion Structure is the action-taking Metal, you have the potential to create iron-forged relationships with those who work for you. It’s very normal for Metal Day Masters to enjoy decades-long relationships with their clients. So be the missing link. You could focus on services that provide done-for-you solutions (based on your expertise).

Finally, Water is fluid and ever-changing. If your Companion Structure is Water, becoming a strategy consultant or change management consultant may be the right position for you.

THE SIDE GIG SERIES 1: INTRODUCTION

Creating a side gig has never been more important than it is today. In the face of volatile market conditions and hyper-inflation, putting all our eggs into a single basket is no longer a viable solution.

Gen-X and Boomers may relate to this. When we were growing up, we were taught to go to school, get into university or college, graduate, get a job, work that job, and then retire. Many of us bought into that script – hook, line and sinker. After all, our post-Industrial Revolution education system was geared to create workers, not entrepreneurs.

Unfortunately, that script is now beyond dated.

5 Reasons Why You Need A Side Gig

While I hesitate to produce hustle porn (fetishization of long work hours, the glorifying of being a workaholic), the reality is that for most people, costs of living have far out-stripped our earning capacities if we just stick to that one-job script. So here are five reasons why:

Market Volatility. With the advent of technology, things are changing so rapidly in the marketplace, that job security today is ephemeral at best. A friend once asked me to look at her daughter’s Bazi Chart. Her daughter had just secured a new job (post-graduation), and my friend wanted me to see if the job would be stable. My answer to her? You’re better off looking at the boss’s chart to see if anything is threatening the stability of his business!
Hyper-Inflation. As I write, prices are going up astronomically in Malaysia. There is just simply no way a fixed income can keep up.
Contribute To Your Savings. A second income could provide a nice little nest-egg (provided you manage to keep your budget steady).
Pursue Your Dream Job. Not many of us end up with our dream jobs. In fact, it’s normal for many of us to not even know what our dream jobs are. Remember that script? We were just told to get a job! Nobody said what job. So most of us start our careers with any offering that is expedient. Creating a side gig can help you take the first step in the right direction – towards achieving your dream job.
Transition To A Second Career. related to the point above, the existence of a side gig takes away many of the uncertainties that come with a sudden change of career roles.

3 Prices You Will Need To Pay For A Side Gig

As mentioned, I really have no intention of adding more to the online noise surrounding the hustle culture online. Therefore, I’m going to flat out inform you that, should you decide to embark on a side gig, there will be sacrifices to make. Three, in particular, are inescapable:

Money/Capital. Depending on the nature of your side gig, you will need some capital to get the business started. Even if you intend to start an online coaching business, you can still expect to spend a certain amount for a laptop, software, perhaps some live-streaming equipment such as a web cam, microphone, and lights.
What Work-Life Balance? During the initial stage of your side gig, as you build this business, expect work-life balance to literally fly out the window. You will be shouldering the demands of your full-time job, as well as the grind of getting your side gig off to a start.
And when you succeed… The best ‘price’ or problem of them all… there will be times when your two worlds clash – when the demands of your full time gig and your burgeoning side gig overlap. This is when you really must ensure that you are appropriately compensated (monetarily) for working like a drudge.

Making Your Side Gig Work

Start from your base. The easiest way to get a side gig started is to begin from your own power base. By that, I mean, pivoting your core skill and making it an integral part of your side gig. Example: if you are an accountant by profession, then perhaps your side gig could focus on helping people manage their debt. Another example: if you are a customer-service hotline operator, perhaps you can consider training others in the skill of managing customer complaints. This is the fastest way to gain momentum. If you need to learn a new skill before you start the side gig, it will simply take up too much time.
Consistency trumps passion. Build consistently. Every day. Give yourself two hours every night to build your side business. Only two hours. No more than that. You would be surprised at how much you can accomplish in the course of a month or six.
You do you. Forget about what everyone else is doing. You are unique. You do what drives you. Because most important of all, a side gig must not be a drag. It must, at the very least, be rewarding. For it to be rewarding, you must enjoy the bulk of what you are doing.

In this series, I would like to share three ways we can use your Bazi Chart to determine a suitable side gig for you. However, please bear in mind that, having not spoken to you in person, these suggestions will need to be very broad so as to be translatable to as many people as possible.

QIMEN: I AM… CHIEF

心想事成. This is a popular Chinese New Year greeting, and certainly one of my favorites. Pronounced as ‘xin xiang shi cheng’… it translates as more than just attaining everything your heart desires. In fact, what it truly means is that your wishes are granted the moment you think of them. Such is the power of the Chief in Qi Men Dun Jia. The most powerful deity of the 10.

Before We Go Any Further, I Am Talking About Your Subconscious

For the benefit of those who may not have been exposed to QMDJ, allow me a couple of sentences to explain. Qi Men Dun Jia is the Art of War. It is a tool designed for strategy and tactics (forecasting and execution). However, there is a spiritual side to Qi Men Dun Jia which believes that we are, each of us, naturally connected to one of ten universal energies.

The ten QMDJ deities are basically ten different manifestations of the universal energy. They are neither demons nor angels. Like all energy forms, they are neutral. Think of your personal deity as your subconscious. It is yours to command. It doesn’t rule you.

The Gifts Of Chief: If Every Thought Can Become Reality, How Would You Train Your Brain?

The Chief exerts a strong protective influence over your life, much like a guardian angel, if you wish. Here’s an interesting sidenote: in the old days, Chief individuals are usually selected to study Chinese Metaphysics like Feng Shui. Because, in the olden days, the Feng Shui practitioner has to travel through forests and mountains in search of good spots. Feng Shui masters with the Chief are immune to negative energy.

Another gift of the Chief is your strong moral compass. That’s the drive behind your charitable nature, wanting always to make this world a better place not only for you, but for others as well.

Apart from that, unlike the other 9 deities, the Chief does not have a specific superpower per se. Instead, the power of the Chief lies in its ability to make your thoughts or wishes come true. Which then begs the question: are your thoughts frequently positive or negative? If you can have everything your heart desires within the realm of possibility, how will you use it to make your life better?

The Weaknesses of the Chief: Literal Thinking

For all the Chief’s amazing powers, one of its biggest weaknesses lies in its straightforward and literal-thinking nature. Our brains cannot understand negatives. Example: if you constantly say, “I don’t want any problems”… our brain only recognizes the word ‘problems’… and with Chief as your Guardian Deity, guess what you’re gonna get?

Therefore, with the Chief in your Destiny Palace, you really must be careful about what you wish for.

The Chief, being a charitable and benevolent form of energy, also leads to a certain selflessness and martyr-like complex. The Chief is also lousy in grey situations where unorthodox methods are called for. Simply put, you just don’t know how to fight dirty.

How To Awaken Your Chief Powers?

Manifestations work fastest for people born with the influence of the Chief. As such, it really is imperative to train your brain to think positively. I know it’s hard, but try you must to delete the negative words from your internal conversations and replace them with positive ones.

For example, please do not constantly berate yourself for being ‘stupid’ or ‘lazy’ or ‘unattractive’ or any one of the gazillion other negative words that we torment ourselves with. These have got to go. Make it a habit to challenge that internal negative voice and make conscious effort to change those words.

Never ever wish harm others. Not only will these ‘wishes’ not come true, it may even backfire on you. Instead, do engage in more charitable works, especially ones where you are required to volunteer your time and energy. The more you do, the more effective your manifestations become. Remember, the Chief is a benevolent energy.

In the study of Qimen, the 9 Heavens represents future resources while the 9 Earth represents current and available resources. Most people born with the influence of the 9 Earth in their destiny palace will tend to exhibit the nurturing aspects of nature. A little passive, patient, self-sacrificing and resourceful, 9 Earth individuals are some of the kindest and most non-confrontational people around.

Wealth for a 9 Earth person is to be accumulated. You have very little appetite for risk, always craving for security and stability. Hence, your patience helps you to spin out long-term strategies that promotes steady growth as opposed to wild roller-coaster rides in the crypto or money markets.
