#17 GENG CHEN/METAL DRAGON (庚辰): THE GIFT OF RAW POWER

In the study of the 60 pillars, there are four super powerful pillars known as Fui Kong/Hui Gang 魁罡. The raw power of the Geng Chen (庚辰) numbers as one of them.

First, a paragraph on the concept of Fui Kong. Sometimes translated as ‘Bright Star’, these four pillars are viewed the General Pillars. These pillars are infused with nobility. They represent toughness, hardiness, and a huge capacity.

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: OVERVIEW

Of all the Geng pillars, the Geng Chen (庚辰)  is the only one that emits Noble Qi. Think of the durability and toughness of an iron shield. This is an individual who is both an original thinker as well as an action-taker.

Seated on your Resource, Output and Wealth, the Geng Chen (庚辰)  or Metal Dragon Day Master is typically intelligent, knowledgeable and frequently financially successful.

A driven survivor, the Geng Chen (庚辰)  at a healthy level, will have unshakeable faith in your own abilities, unwavering in pursuit of your goals, and confident in your ability to turn challenges into opportunities.

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: STRENGTHS

Geng Chen Metal Dragon
  1. The Qi flow for the Geng Chen (庚辰) begins with your Wu Earth (戊) Resource Star. Apart from bringing stability to the Geng Chen pillar, the Wu Earth Resource Star is also the foundation of your ability to literally absorb information.
  2. Your Wu Earth (戊) Resource Star continuously produces your Geng Metal (庚) Day Master. Of the 10 Day Masters, the Geng Metal is known to be a pro-active action taker. The production relationship between the Wu Earth and your Geng Metal, very simply, reflects a person who is able to turn knowledge into action.
  3. As you take action, your Geng Metal (庚) Day Master will attract more opportunities by way of your Gui Water (癸) Output star. This star gives the Geng Chen Day Master a degree of much-needed flexibility. It cloaks you with the mettle to challenge the status quo and is largely responsible for your ‘fall-forward’ philosophy.
  4. Finally, the energy of the Geng Chen pillar ends with your Yi Wood (乙) Wealth star. This star brings with it the ability to plan and manage resource. It other words, this Geng Metal Day Master is no longer working blindly. Instead, you frequently work towards a plan.

Let’s summarize. When we put all the elements together, we have a Geng Chen Day Master who is resourceful, action-oriented, yet capable of flexible planning.

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The strengths of the Geng Chen (庚辰) Day Master can also become your vulnerabilities. So awesome are your capacities that very often, the Geng Chen feels compelled to create success on your own terms. While this is a great trait to have, I want you to be aware of just one thing: your insistence on doing things your own way may lead to a number of uphill battles in your journey through life.

That’s it! Is it really a vulnerability? Not really. Just being aware of this tendency would be enough. The question to frequently check-in with yourself would be: am I making things unnecessarily harder for myself?

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: HOW YOU PRESENT

Aggressive. The Geng Chen (庚辰) Day Master typically will have the reputation of one with a strong spirit of competition. However, this does not mean that the Geng Chen would automatically reject teamwork. On the contrary, you are actually OK with either working solo or in a group. Of course, you would prefer to be the one in the driving seat!

But get past the competitive and rather domineering front, and many people will delight in a barely-hidden trait of the Geng Chen. Like the shield that represents you, the Geng Chen is extremely protective of those they care about and the less fortunate members of society.

GENG CHEN, BUT BETTER

Since your Wu Earth (戊) Resource Star is foundation of the Geng Chen, then the task of becoming Geng Chen, But Better is simply to strengthen that base. Therefore, an easy suggestion would be to ensure that you continuously build up a storehouse of wide-ranging knowledge. Get curious and stay curious! Learn a little about everything. Learn enough for you to start taking action. Because at the end of the day, that’s what all Geng Metal Day Masters are built for!

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#16 JI MAO (己卯) / EARTH RABBIT: THE GIFT OF INDEPENDENCE

Presenting… (drum rolls please)… the go-getter of the cosmos… the resourceful, the immensely independent, the ever-abundant… Ji Mao (己卯)!

Did this intro just deviate from the norm? The Ji Mao has such an infectious and enthusiastic energy, I simply couldn’t help myself.

JI MAO (己卯) / EARTH RABBIT: OVERVIEW

Picture a sprawling plantation (did I just hear the theme song for Dallas play in my head?), bountiful crops growing on rich fertile soil. The key word here, is bountiful.

This resourceful Earth pillar sits squarely on top of its 7 Killings star. With no other stars hanging about to cause confusion, this 7 Killings star imbues the Ji Earth Day Master with shrewdness, courage and the drive to win. While there are plenty of other pillars that are just as determined, what gives the Ji Mao an edge over the rest of us mere mortals, is the fact that its 7 Killings star is also a Peach Blossom star! So while yes, you are shrewd and driven and ambitious, you are also supremely likable.

The Rabbit Branch Peach Blossom injects the Ji Mao Day Master with an approachable and youthful personality. Because of this Peach Blossom star, the Ji Mao attaches a lot of importance to external appearances. You have a heightened appreciation for beauty and an even higher expectation of it.

JI MAO (己卯) / EARTH RABBIT: STRENGTHS

Ji Mao Earth Rabbit
  1. Let’s start by examining the Ji Earth Day Master (己). Like all the other Ji Day Masters, you tend to be very resourceful, compassionate, and genuinely giving. Kindness, in fact, is your first nature.
  2. Your Ji Earth Day Master sits on top of your action-oriented Yi Wood (乙) Killings star. This represents a constant drive for self-improvement and the firm belief that you are in the driving seat of your life. You control your destiny. That belief brings the gift of independence. The Ji Mao Day Master will always prefer to create your own success.

JI MAO (己卯) / EARTH RABBIT: HOW YOU PRESENT

At first glance, the Ji Mao Day Master may seem unassuming. Perhaps even painfully shy. But once you get past the first layer, you will realize that this is someone who can tap into the hidden talent of garnering support. This support comes to you because of your giving nature. As you give, so you shall receive.

JI MAO (己卯) / EARTH RABBIT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Technically, the picture that the Ji Mao presents is that of Earth sitting on top of Wood. Therefore, we see this Yi Wood Killings star as a seed yet to sprout. In other words, this drive and ambition that is budding inside you is kept firmly under wraps.

For the Yi Wood to sprout, the Earth needs to be toiled. This represents your tendency to take on too much work. But then you realize, that no matter how hard you work, no matter how much you earn, it never seems to be enough!

Which leads us to…

JI MAO, BUT BETTER

External appearances of success is indeed important in today’s fast-paced world. But perhaps even more important is the beauty of the Inner Self. Therefore, a suggestion to be Ji Mao but better could be to allocate time on your own spiritual cultivations. Filling that void inside will complement that already attractive shell outside.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#15 WU YIN (戊寅) / EARTH TIGER: THE GIFT OF TRUST

The first rule of SEO is that the first paragraph must always contain the title or keyword of the post. In this case, that would be – Wu Yin (戊寅), the gift of trust.

Now that I’ve adhered to that rule, allow me a paragraph or two to introduce you to a little-known gem in Japan.

Of all the race tracks that I have ever been to (of which there has been many), one stands out as unique from the others. Located south of Japan, three hours from Fukuoka City, high up on the Aso mountain range, lies the Autopolis International Racing Course. Built on the edge of a dead volcano, it rises high above the cloud-line, ringed by tall mountains made lush with trees and evergreens.

For me, the Wu Yin pillar will always call to mind those romantic forest-covered mountains, stretching high above the cloud line.

WU YIN (戊寅) / EARTH TIGER: OVERVIEW

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. Trust is the fundamental cornerstone that keeps our civilization functioning. When a customer trusts a supplier, business is conducted. When a employer trusts an employee, business growth happens. When a couple gets married, trust is the glue that makes the marriage work. Hell, even when driving, we need to trust that the drivers around us know what they are doing.

Confident and powerful, yet sensitive and vulnerable, the Wu Yin is constantly in search of fulfilment and balance. Ironically, it is this search for a stable foundation that bequeaths a precious gift – the gift of trust-building.

Additionally, the Wu Yin (戊寅) or Earth Tiger pillar sits on the prosperous position in the 12 Growth Stages. This indicates a stable and prosperous pillar where the Qi is extremely strong. Because of that, your potential for growth is virtually limitless.

WU YIN (戊寅) / EARTH TIGER: STRENGTHS

  1. As a Wu Yin (戊寅) or Earth Tiger Day Master, earning the trust of the people around you is an ability that comes naturally. Seated on your own Jia Wood (甲) Killings Star gives you the drive to see things through, a key hallmark of a trustworthy person. Growing high on the mountain, this Jia Wood is your desire for fame and power. It is the reason you strive for excellence. This is what makes you such a competitive individual.
  2. Your quest for excellence is further enhanced by your Bing Fire (丙) Resource Star. This element makes you incredibly perceptive. It also helps you create your own inspiration. Supported by this Bing Fire (丙) Resource Star, you are born with the gift for words that inspires everyone around you.
  3. Your Wu Yin (戊寅) Day Pillar is anchored on your Wu Earth (戊) Companion Star. This rooting brings a naturally appealing self-confidence as well as an enduring nature. You can literally outlast your peers on the slow and steady route to success. You are the strong, solid, dependable, and predictable presence in the room.

WU YIN (戊寅) / EARTH TIGER: HOW YOU PRESENT

Externally, you always come across as someone who is super powerful and confident. You stand tall and majestic, just like the mountain you represent.

But inside, there is a vulnerable and sensitive core which I will explain in the next segment.

WU YIN (戊寅) / EARTH TIGER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The three hidden stems in the Yin (寅) or Tiger Branch brings a lot of gifts to the Wu Yin (戊寅) Day Master. They also come with their own unique set of vulnerabilities.

Your Wu Earth (戊) Companion Star that provides you with that all-important stability is constantly being challenged by your Jia Wood (甲) Killings Star. Translated to plain human speak? Your eternal quest for excellence, if not managed properly, will cause you to think that you are never good enough. This causes self-doubt and self-confidence issues, your biggest barriers to success. It is also the reason why you are easily discouraged by even the mildest of critiques.

When your self-confidence is in crisis, the Wu Yin (戊寅) or Earth Tiger Day Master will self-isolate for some much-needed reflection. This behaviour pattern comes from your Bing Fire (丙) Resource Star. While some self-reflection and learning is good, do be aware of the Bing Fire element’s biggest strength/vulnerability – its constant and persistent nature. Be mindful that you are not dwelling on the same issue over and over again. Learn to identify the pattern and how to break it so that the self-reflective tendencies serve to help you instead of derail you.

WU YIN, BUT BETTER

Money for its own sake will not be the driver for this pillar. Instead, it is security, foundation, a safety net that is of prime importance. To be Wu Yin But Better is to fulfil your deep need for family support.

I’d like to remind you that family need not be confined to those who are related to you by blood. It can be family that you choose. Trusted and close friends whom you have allowed into your inner circle who provide you with the love and support you need to grow to your maximum potential.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

RISING WITH THE TIDE: MINDSET SHIFT IN 2021

This post is in honour of World Mental Health day today. For my regular readers, don’t worry, I will get back to the 60 pillars. But for now, let’s talk about how we can rise with the tide with the mindset shift required to make the most of 2021.

If 2020 has left you feeling, well, a little ‘mental’, take comfort in the knowledge that everyone else is going through the same thing in varying degrees.

From a metaphysical point of view, there is an explanation for what we are all experiencing. In a way, we are living through ‘end times’. No, not the end-of-the-world type of ‘end times’. It’s a change from one Feng Shui period (Period 8) to another (Period 9). Of course, not every change brings such dramatic effects. For those old enough to remember, the last change was circa 2003/2004. What is particularly significant, though, is that the energies of these few years are fairly extreme.

That’s right! You’re not going crazy, the cosmos is! 😊

We can all agree that 2020 has pretty much been a complete washout. Ironically, everyone is looking forward to 2021. As though there is somehow a magical button in the heavens somewhere that would magically erase all the bad of 2020 and restore things to ‘normal’. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really work that way.

Here’s the 2021 Bazi Chart:

Water energies continue to be strong in 2021. On the surface, the chart is predominantly comprised of Water and Metal. When these two meet, they signify confusion and emotional overload. Metal is actually pretty weak, suggesting that the confusion is caused by disinformation (fake news, anybody?) driven by ideology and idealism. I will not delve any deeper into dissecting the 2021 chart. I’ll leave that to my betters!

What I would like to do, instead, is to share suggestions on how to shift your mindset to make the most of the Water energies of 2021. In other words, how to rise with the tide.

You see, the year’s Bazi Chart represents the energies that infuses us all. When the energies are this extreme, particularly in the case of Water, it signifies a tilt in our Bazi Structures. When that happens, what used to work does not seem to function well anymore. Even the most balanced structures could be bent out of shape.

So what to do? Should you panic? No! What this calls for, very simply, is a shift in mindset, focus and awareness. There are three possible scenarios. What you need to know is that we are comparing the difference between the Natal structure (yellow) and the Annual structure (purple).

The Stretched Bazi Structure/Extreme Structures

When a structure is stretched, basically it means more is added to what you already have a lot of (Water, obviously). The structure becomes more extreme. When that happens, you will tend to exhibit more of the negative aspects of your structure. Here are the five possible extreme structures and what you need to be aware of:

  1. Extreme Companion Structure. The Problem: When a Companion Structure hits its maximum, certain manipulative tendencies of the structure start to manifest. What could some of these tendencies be? Selfishness is one. When a Companion Structure falls unconsciously into an extreme frame of mind, you are only thinking about what’s in it for you, and you leave your friends and colleagues perplexed, wondering where has that nice team player gone to? The Solution: Focus on personal growth and development instead of belittling others to make yourself feel good. Create something new and diversify! Alternatively, consciously set personal boundaries and learn to recognize behaviour that could alienate others.
  2. Extreme Resource Structure. The Problem: When a Resource Structure shows its extreme qualities, procrastination caused by over-thinking or circular thinking is the biggest danger. The Solution: Talk to people to put your ideas and theories into perspective. Or hire a coach to help you cut through all that buzzing in your head! But do realize that there must be a deadline when the thinking stops and the action begins.
  3. Extreme Influence Structure. The Problem: You take conflict avoidance to the limit and beyond, so fearful of offending others that you can’t get anything done. The Solution: Accept that a certain amount of conflict is always unavoidable. It is unrealistic to think that you can achieving anything without stepping on a couple of toes every now and then. If you judge that this is a temporary condition (maybe only 2021?), then this may be a good year for you to further your education and go for that MBA that you have always been thinking about.
  4. Extreme Wealth Structure. The Problem: Micro-managing. A tendency to take on too much because you think you are the only one who can do the job. The Solution: Either you learn a new threshold of control or you create clear structures to encourage efficiency and heighten productivity with precisely defined task-based objectives and performance expectations.
  5. Extreme Output Structure. The Problem: Unruly, wanton risk-taking. When the Output Structure hits the ceiling, the know-it-all persona emerges, one with an extreme contradictory approach to problems. The Solution: If you cannot resist the siren call of breaking the rules, then at least make sure you know what you are doing. Complement that unconventional big-picture thinking by breaking the vision down to task-based objectives and examine each step to test for flaws.
The Flipped Chart – It’s Time To Pivot

If you find your chart is flipped by the influx of Water energies, it’s time to learn new skills and figure out a new modus operandi to navigate a changing world. Let’s not kid ourselves here, this process will feel uncomfortable because you are essentially learning to become a new person. But eyes on the prize, anything you gained from 2020 and 2021 is yours forever!

For the Water DayMasters, the Companion element will increase while the Wealth element drops. The success of 2021 will depend on how well you learn to work with others. This is the year to focus on your customers’ needs, reputation and fanbase.

Wood DayMasters will find their Resource element enhanced while Output drops. This represents wasted resources due to a lack of innovation. Find new uses for your existing product or skill and expand your market reach in 2021.

Fire DayMasters, 2021 calls for attention to your value-delivery structure. It doesn’t matter if you are a business owner or ‘just’ an employee. All of us have ‘customers’ to deliver to. The key message here is to make sure you are able to deliver what you promise.

Earth DayMasters, this is the year to put theory into practice as the Resource Element drops while the Wealth Element increases. Time to start that new business venture or side gig! Stop thinking and start doing.

Finally, Metal DayMasters, when your structured world (Influence) dissolves into chaos (Output), it’s time to start something new. This is the time for big-picture, out-of-the-box thinking. It’s about finding new solutions to old problems.

The Balanced Chart Stretched Out Of Shape – What To Focus On

For the rare individual with the relatively balanced natal structure, you could also think of 2021 as the year to learn new skills. But in your case, the change may be less uncomfortable, requiring a shift of focus as opposed to adopting a completely new approach.

Water DayMasters, focus on improving your communication skills. This is about how you put yourself forward. This skill will help enhance your networking ability which is prime in 2021. At the same time, do make sure that your productivity level does not fall below par while you are busy expanding your market.

Wood DayMasters, this is the time to upscale your analytical thinking skill. As the world economy move becomes more information-based, the ability to turn complex data into usable information is priceless.

Fire DayMasters, I have a question for you – what problems can you solve? This is the year to identify the answer to that question. The bigger the problem that you can tackle, the higher your net worth will be! Do be mindful though, that you must first thoroughly understand what your market wants as opposed to what you think they want.

For the Earth DayMasters, productivity is the buzzword for 2021. Ask yourself, how else can I deliver value? At the same time, be sure to have the human or financial or information resource you need to upscale your productivity.

Last but not least, Metal DayMasters, innovative new ideas are only as good as their execution. Learn to evaluate the value of your ideas and work on only the ones that matter.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on only the structure. These suggestions do not take into account the many layers of interactions that could possibly happen in a single chart. To pinpoint specific issues or to co-create solutions tailor-made for you, please feel free to drop me a line.

You can plot your Bazi Chart with this free resource (registration required) https://bazibz.masteryacademy.com/. However, do note that the plotter is still reflecting the 2020 energies.

#14 DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: THE GIFT OF HOPE

In the Bazi calendar cycle, the Chou (丑) month always represents the end of winter. The ice is melting but it is still cold, and dark. Sloshing about in that murky darkness can be pretty tiring. But what if there were to be a bonfire glowing in the horizon? Would you not walk towards it? That’s the picture the Ding Chou (丁丑) or Fire Ox represents – a veritable beacon of hope.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: OVERVIEW

Like the welcoming bonfire, the Ding Chou (丁丑) or Fire Ox Day Master is always kind and considerate to everyone. This pillar, when awakened, can become a veritable trail blazer. Especially when you are fired up by your own strong convictions to make the world a better place.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: STRENGTHS

  1. The energy flow of this pillar begins with the Ding Fire (丁) Day Master itself. Here is the true original thinker. Lacking any form of resource within the pillar itself, this Ding Fire (丁) Day Master must rely on either your own ability to re-ignite or find resource from the other pillars in your chart. Because of that, the Ding Chou (丁丑) Day Master is an insatiably curious creature. You enjoy expanding your mind. You will literally consume and internalize information in any form.
  2. However, internalizing information is one thing. When your Ji Earth (己) Output Star kicks into gear, you will be able to re-brand that knowledge with your own unique stamp. That is how you offer enlightenment to those around you. What’s special about this particular combination is that your way of encouraging change and offering enlightenment is done in a very refined and gentle manner. The Ding Chou (丁丑) is always very sensitive to the feelings of others. You inherently understand that change that is forced on people is only temporary. Change that is created through acceptance is permanent. This is perhaps, your biggest strength.
  3. Your visionary Xin Metal (辛) Wealth Star lends lustre to your ability to inspire hope – by bringing depth and clarity to your vision. This star represents your talent to lead by vision. Not only are you able to ignite hope, but you also effect change by showing people the possibilities of what is truly possible.
  4. All that inspirational hope-giving will be just hot air if there are no subsequent actions taken. This is where your Gui Water (癸) Killings Star comes in to play. Problems will always crop up on the road to change. This Gui Water (癸) Killings Star helps you persevere through the problems by seeing them as challenges into of obstacles.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: VULNERABILITIES

However, there is a dichotomy inherent in the Ding Chou (丁丑) or Fire Ox that you must be aware of. The Ding Chou is always caught between your own powerful talents and your own sensitivity towards the feelings of others.  As long as the chasm between these two traits are not bridged, the Ding Chou is likely to lack the high rate of ambition and drive exhibited by the other Ding pillars.

Therefore, the key to success for the Ding Chou is to maintain a positive and singular focus. This is the very persistence and tenacity you need to embody the real beacon of hope for those around you. Your success is one that is created through a slow build. Your success will not be a flash-in-the-pan.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: HOW YOU PRESENT

Friendly and affectionate, the Ding Chou accepts one and all without prejudice. People are drawn to you by the compassion that radiates out of this pillar. On a side note, they also love your off-beat ideas!

There is a need to learn how to discern and filter out those who truly need help or are just there to take advantage of your compassion. The Ding Chou is very much affected by the company you keep and your environment. Make a conscious effort to place yourself in a supportive and encouraging environment. This is where the Ding Chou shines the brightest. Avoid, at all costs, toxic and negative environments. Negativity affects all of us in various degrees. But the sensitivity of the Ding Chou means that prolonged exposure to toxic environments will leave you discouraged and fearful.

DING CHOU, BUT BETTER

The Ding Chou pillar is deeply imaginative. Making a conscious effort to stay ahead of progressive trends is the best way to help this pillar shine. Go in-depth into emerging new trends, research, follow up on the work of thought leaders, and as you do so, you will find that you have what it takes to become a trail blazer in your own right.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#13 BING ZI (丙子)/ FIRE RAT: THE GIFT OF HUMOUR

This is the pillar that started this entire quest for the gifts endowed by the 60 Jia Zi. Pillar No. 13, the Bing Zi (丙子) or Fire Rat, the joker of the pack.

The Bing Zi (丙子) or Fire Rat carries the image of a bright sun hidden behind a bank of clouds. The immediate connotation of this imagery is that of someone who is either unaware of their true talents and intelligence or is deliberately hiding these qualities behind a façade. This façade, is usually, humour.

BING ZI (丙子)/ FIRE RAT: OVERVIEW

Before we go any further, the first thing I want you to know is that the Bing Zi (丙子) or Fire Rat pillar is one of the Six Elegant Days. This denotes the Bing Zi (丙子) Day Master as someone who is naturally elegant and intelligent.

But there seems to be a lot of confusion about the Bing Zi pillar. In fact, this was the pillar that sparked off the idea for this series. Allow me a paragraph (or two) to explain.

The Bing Zi is often the butt of many jokes. Lecherous, clueless, nothing good is ever said about this pillar. Yes, the quest became personal because I was convinced that every single pillar brings a unique ‘something-something’ to the table.

This general confusion about the Bing Zi, however, is completely understandable. Because the pillar by itself is confused! It brings together, two conflicting elements – the Bing (丙), the most Yang, and the Gui (癸) the most Yin – into a single pillar! It’s akin to someone with dual personalities. Are they dealing with the shrewd and observant Gui Water (癸)? Or are they dealing with the generous and magnanimous Bing Fire (丙)? Nobody seems to be very sure. So let me break it down for you.

BING ZI (丙子)/ FIRE RAT: STRENGTHS

  1. Seated on your Gui Water (癸) Officer star, one of the Bing Zi’s stand out characteristics will be loyalty. This star represents your sense of honesty as well as your penetrating wit. It is perceptive and astute. It has the gift of subtle influence.
  2.  But hidden beneath the Gui, a Bing Fire (丙) is still a Bing – consistent, persistent, optimistic, deeply compassionate, vibrant and super-confident. Gifted with big picture thinking, the Bing Zi is an inspired strategist.

Your Gift of Humour

So where does the gift of humour come into play? When both the Bing and Gui are working in tandem. In the Bing Zi itself, the dual qualities of these two elements actually complement each other. A little like the sunlight reflecting off the white clouds on a sunny day. Think of it this way, the penetrating intelligence of the Gui Water (癸) melded with the natural joie-de-vivre of the Bing Fire (丙) results in a Day Master who wields humour as part of your arsenal of talents.

Insanely Suited For Working In The Background

The Bing Zi has a strong inclination to work in the background. Exactly like the sun hiding behind the clouds! At the same time, the Bing Zi Day Master also exhibits a willingness to help everyone around you find success in life.

These two traits, coupled by the Bing Zi’s innate creativity and boundless energy, makes you ideally suited for businesses or professions where you help other people excel and shine. This means that the Bing Zi can excel at roles like being a movie producer, screen writer, talent agent, or yes, at the risk of sounding like I am self-promoting, even a Bazi coach. This is a scenario where the Gui sets the stage for the talent, and the Bing becomes the spotlight.

BING ZI (丙子)/ FIRE RAT: HOW YOU PRESENT

Seated on the Zi Branch (子), a peach blossom star, this is one of the most likable of the six Bing Fire Day Masters. But remember how we spoke about that amazing sense of humour of yours? Unfortunately, it gives you a ‘silly exterior’ that can be both an advantage as well as a disadvantage.

BING ZI (丙子)/ FIRE RAT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Your natural instincts to hide your true capacity and work behind the scenes, can be a handicap of sorts. It is so very easy to under-estimate the Bing Zi (丙子) or Fire Rat Day Master. You see, you will tend to use your sense of humour in a self-deprecating way. In a sense, the humour becomes a cloak that makes the Bing Zi non-threatening and almost invisible.  In certain situations, this can be an advantage. It allows you to effect change from behind the scenes. But in other situations, it makes it all too easy for others to under-estimate, overlook and dismiss your contributions.

People have often asked me, why would the Bing Zi bother to hide? Here’s what I want you to know. The Bing Zi naturally shuns competition and confrontation. This unrooted Bing craves security above all else. When unencumbered by the nitty-gritty politicking of other people, the Bing Zi can literally fly high and soar above the clouds.

In other words, it’s not that the Bing Zi is unequipped to deal with competition and confrontation. Rather, the Bing Zi would prefer to not get bogged down or derailed by the clamouring of others. Among the 60 pillars, the Bing Zi has big-picture thinking so well developed that you have honed your in-born ability to ignore unwanted details. The phrase ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ was probably coined by a Bing Zi, for whom almost everything is categorized under the term ‘small stuff’.

BING ZI, BUT BETTER

The best way for the Bing Zi to turn your goals into reality is to use your ability for big picture thinking by being future-forward and constantly challenging yourself to greater heights. Does this sound too vague? Want a solid suggestion? Sure!

Embrace and develop your innate creativity! The end product of your creativity – be it writing, music, art or strategy – must be visible. Since this Day Master is naturally inclined to stay hidden, then you must allow the end-product of your creativity to shine for you. That is an easy way to allow the Bing Zi to come out from behind the curtain and take a standing ovation every once in a while.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

While you are here, I just want to let you know that the 2022 Rat Forecast is out: https://thehiddensun.com/2021/10/15/the-rat-in-2022/

#12 YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: THE GIFT OF GRACE

Pictured as flowering aquatic plants, think lotus, water lillies or even those magnificent underwater kelp forests, the Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig pillar is undoubtedly one of the more attractive of the 60 pillars. If there is to be one word to sum up the Yi Hai, it would be the gift of Grace.

Stripping away all spiritual or religious connotations off the word, the verb grace very simply means to have a certain finesse or poise or an attractive manner of behaving. So… physically attractive, intelligent, daring and possessing of an almost incurable wanderlust… what can we do with this pillar?

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: OVERVIEW

The hidden roots of the aquatic plant, buried deep underwater, represents a person who is unaware of the talents and potential hidden beneath the surface. It’s not uncommon for many Yi Hai (乙亥) Day Masters to spend a lifetime in search of themselves.

Well, search no more. Let me lay it out right here for you.

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: STRENGTHS

  1. The Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig Day Master exhibits all the graces of the Yi Wood (乙) Day Element – kindly, unassuming, and unaffected. Most of all, you possess the flexibility and versatility that is the core of the Yi Wood. They say that only dead fishes go with the flow. Not so with the Yi Hai who naturally knows how to thrive in uncertain waters. You are the ultimate survivalist whose soft approach to life gives you a high level of adaptability and the knack for making the most of any situation. This in-born humility of the Yi Hai is a key factor in your success. Unlike other harder and prouder pillars, you are able to gracefully accept help from all quarters.
  2. The humility of the Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig Day Master is genuine. As is the deep intelligence hidden below represented by your Ren Water (壬) Resource Star. Sustained by this intelligence star, absorbing new skills should be as easy as breathing for you. If you ever find yourself in a sink-or-swim sitch, I have no doubt that the Yi Hai will quickly learn to swim.
  3. Finally, your Jia Wood (甲) Companion star is the hidden anchor that props you up in life. This is the root of your ambition and ability to quickly grasp opportunities that float your way. This Jia Wood Companion star also offers tenacity. However, you will need to make conscious use of this ability. Which leads us to your biggest vulnerability…

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The versatility of the Yi Hai or Wood Pig pillar may manifest as a certain type of wanderlust. Impulsive and impatient, the Yi Hai is always eager to be on the move, constantly searching for new environments where it can thrive.

You find those who stay rooted in one place almost incomprehensible. Because to you, letting go and moving on is so very easy. But, wait! Before you uproot again… ask yourself this – are you moving impulsively out of boredom, frustration, or disappointments?

There is a need here, to develop a persevering attitude, an anchor if you will, to conquer such impulsive behaviour long enough to achieve your goals. That’s where the rooting provided by your Jia Wood (甲) Companion star comes in.

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig Day Master is loaded with physical attractiveness, especially the women. This pillar has a magnetizing effect on others. Fun loving and creative, you have the ability to float in and out of diverse social environments and still thrive with grace, poise and finesse. People will tend to find you just a tad emotional and a bit of an oddball. But that’s just a part of the allure of the Yi Hai pillar!

YI HAI, BUT BETTER

The Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig is a pillar of untapped potential. Remember how I said earlier that many Yi Hai Day Masters spend a lifetime trying to find themselves? Well, find yourself through education, exploration and new experiences. Tap into the immense intellectual potential of this pillar either through formal or informal education.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#11 JIA XU (甲戌)/ WOOD DOG: THE GIFT OF TENACITY

This may not be the lushest of the Jia pillars, but the Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog carries something much more valuable, the gift of tenacity. Imagine with me, a tree growing high on a craggy mountain. Exposed to the elements, buffeted by the unceasing winds, lashed by torrential rain, it clings on. How much tenacity, how much will-power and determination must this tree possess to take root under such harsh conditions?

JIA XU (甲戌)/ WOOD DOG: OVERVIEW

If the Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog is found in your Day Pillar, like the tree, sheer determination is one of your greatest attributes. This combines perfectly with your innate independence, resulting in an assertive, strong and dynamic personality.

The world we live in today puts a lot of premium on passion. Yes, passion can get you moving. But passion can only take you so far. Beneath the passion, there must be a willingness to persevere through the challenges.

Passion is the ability to get excited about something. Irrepressibility and tenacity is about the ability to stay with it. You get some success. You run into some walls. You try a formula for a new idea, a new innovation, it doesn’t work. And it’s how tenacious you are, how irrepressible, how ultimately optimistic and tenacious you are about it that will determine your success.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO

JIA XU (甲戌)/ WOOD DOG: STRENGTHS

Let’s go back to the example of our tree high up on the mountain. From its vantage point, the tree observes the daily march of time. Like a general directing his troops from the top of the battlements, the tree discerns changes in the environment, spots new growth and detects upcoming threats from its surroundings.

This quality gives the Jia Xu Day Master the ability to adopt rare viewpoints as well as a deep level of strategic thinking that becomes your competitive edge.

  1. The Jia Wood (甲) Day Master is typically kind and benevolent. You have a genuine concern for others. The roots of the Jia Xu (甲戌) grow deep and wide. It has to! Otherwise, any little gale would topple it. However, this Jia has no rooting within the pillar itself. Therefore, the rooting must come from elsewhere in the Bazi Chart. If you were to examine a tree growing on rocky and mountainous terrain, chances are, you will notice that its roots are very spread out, literally clenching the earth to gain stability. What this means is that you, the Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog Day Master, must create your own support systems. You need to have contacts in a myriad of communities or networks. Once these ‘roots’ take hold, that is when the true qualities of the Jia Xu, your independent and strong-willed nature, can really grow. These support systems are literally your anchor when you face the winds of change.
  2. Sitting on a Fire Storage which is your Ding Fire (丁) Output Star, the Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog should never be shy about sharing your opinions. You like to feel that you are contributing. You gain satisfaction from having influenced change. So, back to the first point about ‘rooting’, the more people you are able to share your opinions with, the better it would feel. Otherwise, suppress those opinions for too long and the Jia Xu (甲戌) may just implode! Therefore, the trick is to create a platform where you can share your ideas.
  3. Your Wu Earth (戊) Indirect Wealth star is exactly your platform. This practical star carries a strong entrepreneurial spirit and the intuitive ability to spot opportunities. Conscious use of your Wu Earth (戊) Wealth star is to know your goal! With an end destination in mind, the tenacious Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog can be virtually unstoppable
  4. Finally, your Xin Metal (辛) Officer star. In the case of the Jia Xu (甲戌) Day Master, this star adds to your natural tenacity by gifting you with an iron will. It enhances your big picture thinking with a knack for fine details. More importantly, it represents your inherent willingness and ability to reframe setbacks and bounce back stronger.

JIA XU (甲戌)/ WOOD DOG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF & HOW YOU PRESENT

As a Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog Day Master, you usually present an exterior persona of outward calm and absolute control.

But, let’s face it. The Xu Branch (戌) or Dog is not exactly an ideal environment for a tree. It’s rocky, there’s very little soil, and whatever soil there is, is dry and shallow. There’s very little support for the Jia (甲) tree. To make matters worse, growing at such heights, the Jia Wood is literally exposed to the elements, constantly buffeted by wind, rain, harsh sunlight and snow.

Beneath that calm and controlled behaviour, is a tornado of emotions swinging from one extreme to another. These emotions will propel you on a never-ending quest for stability and security. And, for all your outward control, you seem to have a thin skin when it comes to even the mildest of disparaging words.

Therefore, learn to set yourself up for long-term success. Find courage in your own convictions and talents. We can allow ourselves to be changed by external forces, as long as, at the end of the day, we’re still standing tall.

Finally, like most everything else in life, gifts can be a double-edged sword. There is an almost invisible line between tenacity and sheer stubbornness. Jia Xu individuals have the tendency to commit fully to situations, even when there are no benefits to be gained. This is something for you to be aware of.

JIA XU, BUT BETTER

The most important lesson for the tenacious Jia Xu (甲戌) or Wood Dog is to stay grounded. Ground your work in meaning and purpose. For the Jia Xu, the stability of the Earth element on which it sits is everything. Remember our earlier analogy of the tree at the top of a craggy mountain? Without stability, the tree will likely collapse and fall. This translates to a need to keep your actions grounded and aligned to your purpose.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar. To pinpoint specific issues or to co-create solutions tailor-made for you, please feel free to drop me a line.

#10 GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: THE GIFT OF CURIOSITY

Sometimes viewed as an invigorating and cleansing autumn rain, sometimes described as a clear stream flowing over mineral rocks, the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master is curiosity personified.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: OVERVIEW

A sensitive Water pillar at its core, the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster is considered as the most inquisitive of the 60 Pillars. There is a wonderful sense of child-like wonder within this pillar. You have the initiative to explore new concepts and the fearlessness to tread new paths.

How does that come about? Let’s have a look.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: STRENGTHS

The Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster sits on, and is supported by, your Xin Metal (辛) Resource element. This makes you an unconventional learner with a craving for knowledge and new experiences.

It also represents your ability to self-educate. Anything and everything that you are curious about, you will somehow manage to pick up the know-how.

And what a wonderful gift to have! Curious people learn and retain information better. It is also one of the hallmarks of creative thinkers, implying the ability to creatively look beyond the present and imagine possible futures for yourself by coming up with out-of-the-box insights and ideas.

Curiosity also brings with it a greater capacity for personal development, resulting in an individual who is open to other’s point of view.

In your case, this Xin Metal (辛) Resource Element also gives you, the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master, your single-minded ability to focus on the task at hand. It gives you the ability to drill a problem down to its core so that you can resolve it once and for all.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The relationship of the Xin Metal (辛) producing the Gui Water (癸) Day Master may also possibly manifest as a fickle personality. Yes, you have a talent for razor-sharp focus. The problem is, that focus can switch at a moment’s notice. In other words, watch out for that ‘SOS’ – Shiny Object Syndrome.

This SOS Syndrome is usually triggered when you become frustrated or when things are not going your way. While there is nothing really wrong with being fickle, giving in to this trait too often may derail you from your objectives.

The Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster’s biggest lesson in life is to learn how to overcome obstacles and challenges. It is only through adversity that the true potential of the Gui You will shine forth.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master can present as a naïve and carefree individual. Externally, like the slow-moving stream, you like to slow things down and savour every moment that life has to offer.

Again, there is nothing wrong with wanting a slow-paced lifestyle. However, we now live in a society that venerates the fast-mover, the go-getter, the hard-worker. So what I’m trying to say is that, you risk being labelled as ‘lazy’ for no apparent reason.

The purpose of this segment is just to create awareness of the fact that people may label you as laid-back. If this is not a problem for you, then let’s just leave things as they are.

GUI YOU (癸酉), BUT BETTER

Today’s society may look down on those who are laid back, but it puts a premium on the unconventional maverick. Because the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master is such a curious individual, it is inevitable that you will have a store of amazing ideas that can literally change the world. Share those ideas publicly. Display your mental potential. Be known as a powerhouse for ideas. As a creative thinker! This would be a great way to use all the strengths and perceived vulnerabilities of the Gui You pillar.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#9 REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: THE GIFT OF UNPREDICTABILITY

The Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar can be visualized in two ways. From one perspective, we can see it as a shark or a submarine lurking in the depths of the ocean. From this perspective, we get the feeling of the latent power and deep thinking abilities of the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey.

On the other hand, we could also picture the Ren Shen (壬申) as the sunken Titanic. What feelings come to mind when you hold that picture in your head? Melancholy? Yes. Romantic? Put Hollywood out of your mind, please. There’s nothing romantic about what happened to the Titanic. It was nothing less than a tragedy.

But here’s the beauty of the 60 pillars. The principles of Ying and Yang always applies. Best of all, you – the Day Master – gets to decide how the picture will turn out. So what’s it gonna be if you are a Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master? A shark/submarine or a capsized ship?

Are you having difficulties choosing? Need more information? Sure! As they sang in the animated movie The Little Mermaid, let’s head… Under The Sea.

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: OVERVIEW

Be it a shark, submarine or sunken ship, the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar inevitably carries a sense of depth – intellectual and emotional depth. Capable of extraordinary stillness and intent focus, you frequently startle those around you with your clarity of thought and quick action-taking abilities. Like a shark, you can be idly gliding in one moment, and burst into a ball of frenetic action the next.

Because of that, there will always be a fascinating feel of unpredictability with the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master. People will struggle to classify or label you. Just when they think they’ve got you pegged, a different aspect of your personality or talent floats up to the surface. This amazing strength is uniquely Ren Shen (壬申). And it is both magnetic and mesmerizing.

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: STRENGTHS

The Ren Water (壬) Day Masters are always equated with strong intelligence and resourcefulness. Given the intellectual depth of this Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar, it is not uncommon to find the Ren Shen Day Master with a very specialized skill that requires tremendous intellectual energy. Basically, that’s a roundabout way to say – you are very smart. Like very, very smart!

In this pillar, the Ren Water (壬) Day Master is at the height of its power. Sitting on the Growth Position in the 12 Growth phases makes you a dynamic individual with the ability to easily assimilate complex information.

  1. The energy of the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar begins with the Wu Earth (戊) Influence Star. In addition to bringing much-needed stability and focus to the Ren Shen pillar, this star is the seat of your propulsive willpower and action-taking abilities. It also shapes your win-or-lose attitude towards life. Nothing triggers a Ren Shen Day Master more than a good debate.
  2. The Wu Earth (戊) Influence Star then produces your Geng Metal (庚) Resource Star. This all-important resource element is the lodestone of your originality. This is what makes you such an inspired thinker. Conversation with you is always thought-provoking and intriguing.
  3. Finally, the Geng Metal (庚) Resource Element produces you, the Ren Shen Day Master, and your Ren Water (壬) Companion element. This rooted self-element represents a strong sense of self. It is also the reason why you gravitate towards bouts of self-introspection.

As an aside, if I had a secret, I would most probably entrust it to a Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master. Lock the secret within the depths of the ocean and it will never see the light of day!

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The biggest vulnerability that you, the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master, must be aware of is that combination of Metal and Water in this pillar. It represents a whirlpool of emotions constantly churning deep within. When a Ren Shen Day Master is down in the dumps, you have a strong tendency to wallow.

This vulnerability can be self-defeating. The whirlpool of emotions goes round and round at the same point, never moving forward, needlessly sucking in all your intellectual energy and willpower.

The trick to overcoming this vulnerability is to first gain awareness. From there, you must learn to recognize the symptoms when the whirlpool starts forming and devise strategies to interrupt those unproductive thought patterns. Exercise or any physical activities could be a viable solution in this instance. So do consider it.

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master can present alternately as either cold and reserved or fun-loving and playful. That’s part of the delightful unpredictability of this Day Master’s make-up.

You are usually quite care-free. The coldness happens when you are preoccupied trying to keep your emotions in check. Sometimes, you give off the wrong impression that you are a bit indecisive and aimless. But watch out when you make up your mind. Boom! That idly gliding shark will pounce into action!

We keep coming back to this unpredictability of the Ren Shen Day Master, don’t we? I really can’t stress it enough. It is such a strong advantage, so why not figure out how to make the best of it.

REN SHEN (壬申), BUT BETTER

When a shark stops swimming it dies. The Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master sits on a travelling star. You just need to keep moving, both physically and mentally. A Ren Water Day Master is born to connect with people. Even if we are locked down due to Covid, you must continue to create connections and from there, keep growing as an individual and as an intellectual. Because when the movement stops, the whirlpool starts!

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.
