2023 CHINESE ZODIAC: OX

If you were given a year to master a skill, what would it be? That is the question posed to the Ox in 2023.

In creating this new series, I’ve endeavoured to shift your perspectives of the positive and negative stars. They are neither promises nor guarantees. Instead, these are tools given to you for 2023, and it’s up to you to choose which one works better for you. The results become more obvious when we match our actions to the effects.

And when we learn to use these stars, that is when life happens for you, instead of happening to you.

Therefore, this post will include descriptions of the effects of the stars, followed by some ideas (or suggestions, if you will), on how the stars can be used. Please note that critical thinking is required on your part. Because without looking at the full information from your unique Bazi Chart, the ideas cannot be customized and must be kept as broad as possible.

THE OX IN 2023

Ox 2023

In 2022, the Ox had a choice to make – to build in public, or to work silently in the background. If you had been visible, and I’m assuming that you were, the visibility from 2022’s Golden Carriage and Surpassing Path would have brought you some growth opportunities.

Now, with those opportunities in hand, it’s time to focus on the task at hand. When I look at the list of stars in the Ox for 2023, I see a Japanese sword master, spending a year perfecting a single katana. He folds the metal again and again and again, honing the steel into a formidable weapon

This mental picture of a Japanese sword master at work, is the picture I ask you to carry in your head as you go about 2023.

FORTUNE NOBLEMAN AND SKY BRIGHT

The presence of the Fortune Nobleman and the Sky Bright denotes mastery. To metaphrase, the Sky Bright represents fame through one’s talents and knowledge. To attain that fame or recognition, one must first develop those skill and talents.

In many cases, mastery can only be attained when we have time alone – hours upon hours of study, research, practice, and more practice. The Sky Bright is not talking about a hidden talent that suddenly pops up. Instead, the Sky Bright supports the talent that is acquired through dedication and practice.

Therein lies the problem. We live in a world of instant gratification. With the advent of technology, we have lost the ability to wait. And we have forgotten that sometimes, the things that are worth doing, requires time and effort.

LONESOME AND PEELING HEAD

And because we have lost the ability to wait, we get upset when we don’t see instant results. To make things worse, because the process or journey of mastery is a solitary journey, there may be instances when we feel unsupported. This is what the Lonesome and Peeling Head is pointing to. Both are emotional stars, denoting that we feel unsupported in our quest to master this certain skill.

LEOPARD TAIL

Not only are we feeling lonely in this journey, but it seems we also need to learn to deal with naysayers coming in the form of the Leopard Tail. These are like trolls, they’re petty people who seem to take delight in undermining our efforts. Here we are trying to master a skill, and here is this group telling us that we’re wasting our time. What to do about them? Ignore!

FUNERAL GUEST

The Funeral Guest hints at the possibility of hearing bad news. When we see this star, it’s always a good idea to make the effort to re-connect with distant friends or family members. Ironically, the Funeral Guest can sometimes serve as a reminder to us that life is short and it can actually galvanize us into action.

SKY DOG

Finally, the Sky Dog. This is a pretty minor negative star. It means the potential of experience a scar or blemish to our skins. So be careful when handling sharp objects. It can also point to the possibility of loss and wastage caused by defective products. Therefore, make sure to always examine a product thoroughly before you buy.

If you’re planning to buy big purchases like a car or property – make sure to get it independently assessed before making the purchase decision

OX 2023: SUGGESTED CAREER CHECKLIST

Using the Ox stars for career development is fairly simple. Spend the year mastering a skill… not acquiring a new one. An existing skill.

And as for the negative stars? If you feel unsupported, be pro-active about it and seek out the support you need. Perhaps you could buddy up with a friend and act as accountability coach for each other?

OX 2023: SUGGESTED BUSINESS CHECKLIST

Ox 2023

For the Business Owners, solopreneurs especially, will be vulnerable to the effects of these negative stars. Because a solopreneur works… alone! We’re the ones delivering the product, we’re the ones doing the marketing, we’re the boss, we’re the cleaner, we’re everything!

But with the coming of the Sky Bright especially, 2023 would be a good year to start assembling your dream team. People will hard skills who can make your life a little easier. They don’t need to be in your permanent employ. They can be talented freelancers!

And as mentioned, get your support network in place!

OX 2023: MENTAL WELLNESS CHECKLIST

Because the negative stars in the Ox for 2023 talks a lot about the psychological issues such as loneliness and depression, here’s some extra content just for the Ox!

One suggestion is to learn to love the journey, not the outcome.  When you love the journey, the chances of getting the outcome is higher.

On this note, pick a skill that you want to master. No ‘shoulding’ here. What’s shoulding? ‘ I should do this, I should do that!’ Once the ‘shoulding’ starts, the judging begins, and then maybe the shaming tags along. And what happens to our self-worth when that starts? So pick a skill you want to master so that you can love the journey.

This way, the journey will contribute towards cultivating our self worth. What’s the difference between self worth and self esteem? Simple! Self esteem is reliant on external validations. Self worth is internal – how we see ourselves regardless of what’s going on outside.

And speaking of outside… let’s have a look at where is your Ox?

WHERE IS YOUR OX?

YEAR PILLAR

If you have the Ox in your Year Pillar, it seems like there are unrecognized talents or people in need of support within your industry, friend list, linked in connections, contacts, acquaintances, social media followers.

If you want to use these stars, then your job would be to get out there, network, discover who they are, and first of all, offer your support. Be the friend they need!

MONTH PILLAR

If you have the Ox in your Month pillar that governs career and business, this is a great year to focus on honing your proverbial sword. Gain mastery over a skill that will pay back for years and years to come.

Remember that image of a Japanese swordmaster? Be that! So focused on honing your craft that you are impervious to negative feelings and naysayers. Come 2024, that proverbial sword of yours must be ready to be launched! Because the positive stars will be coming back.

This is about using a year with negative stars as prep year. Some people will wait until the positive stars arrive before they start doing something. By then, it’s too late! If we use a year with negative stars for prep, by the time the positive stars return to our Ox column, the results we get will increase exponentially!

DAY PILLAR

How about Ox in the day which governs yourself, and your personal relationships? Seems like you will feel a little unsupported in 2023. Why not be pro-active about this?

Communicate what you need to feel supported! If Significant Other is unable to provide the support you need, then get your own support network in place. This pillar is not just about your significant other. This pillar can also include your BFFs, or your immediate family.

Or perhaps, your Significant Other may be the one feeling unsupported. Either way, communication is the key.

HOUR PILLAR

Ox in the Hour will govern your children, your staff, investments, ideas, ideals, and ambitions.

Where your children and staff are concerned, this could be the right time to increase their self-worth by encouraging them to master a certain skill.

What about investments? Learn the skills you need to become a master investor! Sky Bright type of mastery requires hours of practice. I can’t stress that enough.

It’s January 2023 and things seem to be moving at a snail’s pace. The January 2023 Bazi chart feels like we’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and everything is in a state of stasis. After a year as the self-starter of 2022, the Rat must be ready to launch into stratosphere. Because in 2023, you are undoubtedly, the comeback kid of the Water Rabbit!

THE RAT IN 2023

Rat 2023

2022, as far as the Rat was concerned, was a year of self-cultivation. It was a year for us to create our own opportunities. Because there were no external support or external opportunities. This load of negative stars were here to teach us that we are not helpless. They were here to show us how to shift our perspectives and create opportunities even when there were none.

So the Rat is the undisputed comeback kid of 2023. With a smorgasbord of positive stars littered with words we like to read – Prosperity, Fortune Virtue, and many more! But before we get there, we must have successfully changed our perspectives.

DRAPES, CURLED TONGUE AND CROSSING SHA

Drapes talk about emotional instability. If you are emotionally vulnerable, it could be a concern. Curled Tongue and Crossing Sha are miscommunications and potential for arguments.

If you are the type who tends to intellectualize your emotions, I doubt you would even feel the presence of these three.

YEAR PUNISHMENT

However, it’s the Year Punishment, that with your permission, I would like to share a little more detail about.

When the Rat and the Rabbit meets, they form a type of punishment called the Uncivilized Punishment. This punishment conveys a feeling of being victimized.

In the traditional texts, the explanation for Uncivilized Punishment can be scary. It can manifest as assault, harassment, incest and even rumours and gossip of a carnal nature. Now before you start freaking out… it does not have to happen! I repeat: it does not have to happen! It’s just a warning of a potential threat. That’s all.

Some Masters would describe the Uncivilized Punishment as a problem caused by morality. But to me, Uncivilized Punishment is a problem about boundaries and power imbalance. After all, assault, particularly sexual assault, harassment, stalking, and incest… are at its most basics, a breach of personal boundaries. Somebody has overstepped their bounds. Now mind you, this could pan out both ways – the person who is suffering the Uncivilized Punishment could either be the victim OR the aggressor.

Rat 2023

Since the Rat will be facing an Uncivilized Punishment in 2023, here are some suggestions:

  1. Let’s ensure that we keep all our dealings professional. Since this punishment can manifest in the form of rumours and gossip, and since we are all surrounded by spy cams everywhere these days, it would be in our favour to keep all our dealings professional. No improprieties. Not a whiff!
  2. Ladies would already know this. Most women already practice this. Be vigilant about personal safety. All those rules – you know, at a party, get your own drinks, don’t lose sight of our drinks, if walking late at night, try to stay to the populated areas. I’m not saying don’t party! Just make sure your safety precautions are in place.
  3. Since the Uncivilized Punishment conveys a sense of victimization, it is particularly important in 2023, for those with the Rat in our Bazi Charts to establish, communicate, and stand firm on the topic of our boundaries – particularly personal boundaries and personal space. Because, when we add all the negative stars together (Year Punishment, Drapes, Curled Tongue, and Crossing Sha), when we consolidate their effects into one, this can possibly spell Emotional Blackmail and Gaslighting.

But now that we’ve dealth with the punishment, it’s time to look forward to all the goodies that are coming to the Rat in 2023. So back to the positive stars!

HEAVENLY VIRTUE

The Heavenly Virtue is a blessings star. It helps dissolves the negative stars, and remove obstacles. To effectively use the Heavenly Virtue, requires us to install new beliefs.

Now that we’ve broken out of Prison, using the Heavenly Virtue calls for new goal-setting, and a re-alignment of our actions.

THRIVING

The Thriving star, simply, energizes! It gives us this extra boost of courage and energy. When we have this additional boost of courage and energy, we behave in a more confident manner, leading to potentially, wealth opportunities brought to you by your friends.

These two stars, the Heavenly Virtue and Thriving, are the jumping off point for a successful 2023.

FORTUNE VIRTUE AND PROSPERITY STAR

To enhance the effect of the Heavenly Virtue and Thriving Star, comes two more money stars. The Fortune Virtue brings wealth opportunities and enhances the effects of the other Wealth stars. How does it enhance? By working hand-in-hand with the Prosperity Star, it brings us many opportunities to enrich our network. Here comes the chance to build strong and mutually beneficial relationships.

So far, these four money stars do not say that we will suddenly get rich. How I wish! Right? What it says is that, the contacts we have may bring us opportunities. We need to be ready to say yes, take action, and nip problems in the bud, and the Heavenly Virtue will gift us with a relatively smooth year ahead.

RED MATCHMAKER, PEACH BLOSSOM AND SALTY POOL

Building relationships will be easy for the Rat in 2023. Our likability has zoomed up by 1000%! All these likability stars! The Red Matchmaker brings relationship luck. For those who are single and looking, pay attention. It brings this flash of recognition. Somehow, people just like you!

Same for the Peach Blossom! There is this aura of likability about you.

And finally, the Salty Pool! Personal desirability has increased. Typically, it points to fleeting romances, short and exciting flings. Things get exciting on the dating front.

RAT 2023: SUGGESTED CAREER CHECKLIST

On the career front, 2023 would be a good year to review your career goals and then, create alliances within your industry or organization to grow together.

For the negative stars, as always, this is an issue about boundaries. Not only should we communicate our boundaries to others, at the same time, please be mindful to respect other people’s boundaries as well.

We get this sorted, likability increases. Be sure to keep all your dealings professional.

RAT 2023: SUGGESTED BUSINESS CHECKLIST

Rat 2023

For the Business Owners, these positive stars are a great opportunity to create new income streams for your business. Specifically, new projects brought to you by your contacts. These stars don’t really talk about partnerships. They talk about people giving you opportunities.

To deal with the negative stars? Filter your customer list. All business owners understand this. Some clients have got to go.

Alternatively, still on the negative stars, you could take this opportunity to ensure a safe and comfortable environment in your workspace. This would be a positive way to dissipate the effects of the negative stars.

And finally, with the likability stars, you need to take the lead in the sales pitch. People like you. They want to do business with you. Awesome!

2023 CHINESE ZODIAC: PIG

The key words for the Pig in 2023 are staying low key, private, and humble. A far cry from the glamour of 2022, to be sure. But this could be the year you learn to use your triggers as motivation and drive. Ignore the noise… focus on your execution!

THE PIG IN 2023

BACK POKING

The Pig literally had all the money stars in 2022. But along with those positive stars, came a very clear warning against arrogance. They were a caution that pride comes before a fall.

Because in 2023, unfortunately, the Pig literally went from Hero to (almost) Zero. But hold on! Don’t panic yet. There’s a way to circumvent these. Let me first explain their effects.

If you had taken advantage of the positive stars in 2022, the success you enjoyed may have generated jealousy and envy. This is what the Back Poking is telling you. As its name suggests, there may be incidences of slander, defamation, gossip… those unpleasant stuff.

Now, most of the time, we can ignore them. However, certain allegations may need to be addressed.

WHITE TIGER AND SKY WARRIOR

Like the Back Poking, the White Tiger is also an indicator of the presence of petty people. But the White Tiger can be more serious, especially when paired with the Sky Warrior. Together, both indicate that the campaign of misinformation, may be bad enough to cause damage to your reputation. With these two coming together, you need to make sure that all your actions are above-board, leave no room for errors, make sure you cross your ‘t’s and dot your ‘I’s.

People with the Pig energy in our Bazi Charts, in certain aspects of your lives, can be quite easy going, trusting and maybe a little naïve. This is because the energy in this particular branch is a smooth production cycle, so the Pig branch can be a bit laid back. Stay alert to the White Tiger and Sky Warrior. Don’t allow yourself to be backed into a vulnerable position, think through your words and actions, and make sure to always keep your ass covered.

Ironically, the White Tiger can also amp up your execution skills. It lends a degree of aggression to the normally laid back pig. Therefore, please be more alert when you are on the road, because the White Tiger can also indicate the possibility of accidents or injury.

GOAT BLADE AND EARTH SHA

Dealing with petty people can be annoying. Even the most laidback Pig have been known to fight back when cornered. This is where the Goat Blade comes in which carries warnings of irritability and rash behaviour. Anger, offensive retorts, rude replies.

And because of our adverse reaction to all these provocations, now comes the Earth Sha which puts obstacles in our way, especially on the work front. These can be hard-to-define problems – lack of cooperation, passive-aggressive resistance, power plays.

When these four come together, in today’s hyper-connected social media world, this spells cancel culture, virtue signalling, trolls, keyboard warriors.

HEAVENLY CHEF

The one saving grace is your solitary positive star, the Heavenly Chef which presence indicates the ready availability of good food and drinks. With the Heavenly Chef in the picture, you still have the opportunity to continue building strong relationships by sharing meals together!

PIG 2023: SUGGESTED CAREER CHECKLIST

For career professionals, I know that ‘theoretically’ our personal social media profiles ‘should’ be our own. But freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom of consequences. And you and I both know… Cancel Culture, can cost jobs and livelihoods. So please think before you post. In our hyper-connected world, many people have forgotten how to agree to disagree. Especially when mob mentality takes over.

Next, choose your hill to die on. Pick your battles. Decide what is worth fighting for? What is not?

Finally, with the single positive stars, focus your attention on building great relationships. Or else… go the safe route… and for 2023, all you post are food photos.

PIG 2023: SUGGESTED BUSINESS CHECKLIST

For the Business Owners, on the other hand, things can get a bit more interesting. With Cancel Cultlure, people have become more sensitive to the words and actions of businesses and their executives. With the presence of the Back Poking, you need to walk your talk and deliver on what you promise. Be careful of over-using or over-playing virtue signalling in your content marketing.

But with the presence of the White Tiger, also comes a hidden opportunity to create Purpose-driven branding. This type of marketing acknowledges that there is no way to make everyone happy. Therefore, your Brand must stand up for what you believe in.

At the same time, you need to ensure that your management team must be ready to address the concerns raised from the Back Poking. A bland press release written by your Corporate Comms is not enough in this case. With the White Tiger, the written word is not enough. You need to show up.

The boss must be ready to step up, admit fault if necessary, offer redress, apologize when wrong, or doing the opposite and taking a firm stance on specific hot-button issues.

And finally, with the Heavenly Chef, forge quality partnerships. You had the Grand Duke Combination in 2022. Continue to nurture those relationships and align your brand with others that have similar values.

PIG 2023: SUMMARY

This will be a year where you focus on your relationships. On removing detractors? Turning your antis into your fans. Smoothing your relationships with the people around you.

Because, come 2024, the positive stars come back, and we must be free to move and unencumbered by haters.

But… that’s next year’s story. For 2023, let’s see where is your Pig?

WHERE IS YOUR PIG?

If you have the Pig in your Year which governs your industry, market, social networks, social media followers… basically, other people! From your perspective, they may be hyper-sensitive in 2023.

The career advise holds for this one – think before you post! Especially if you are a public figure such as, an influencer or celebrity. Celebrities like comedians or actors and singers, will be more vulnerable to these because they rely on the goodwill of the public.

While there’s nothing we can do about what people comment in our social media profiles, there is one thing we could do – DON’T POKE THE PIG! Do you really need to comment on a current issue that has nothing to do with you? Is there a need to virtue-signal, for example?

MONTH PILLAR

How about the Pig in your Month pillar which is literally the business or career pillar? At work, be it business or career, 2023 is a year to focus on building strong relationships.

I must admit, the stars in the Pig are a little hard to flip. Because they involve other people’s mouths! Which we can’t control. What we can control is our own reaction to the provocations. How we deal with these provocations.

DAY PILLAR

In 2023, the challenge to the Dog is to find the opportunities hidden within a crisis. In other words, it’s time to train yourself to spot the silver lining in every cloud.

ABOUT THE 2023 CHINESE ZODIAC SERIES

In creating this new series, I’ve endeavoured to shift your perspectives of the positive and negative stars. They are neither promises nor guarantees. Instead, these are tools given to you for 2023, and it’s up to you to choose which one works better for you. The results become more obvious when we match our actions to the effects.

And when we learn to use these stars, that is when life happens for you, instead of happening to you.

Therefore, this post will include descriptions of the effects of the stars, followed by some ideas (or suggestions, if you will), on how the stars can be used. Please note that critical thinking is required on your part. EMPEROR STAR AND DRAGON VIRTUE

The Dog was not exactly spoiled for choice in 2022. The one good thing the Dog had was the Elegant Seal which made 2022 a great year to upskill.

Now that you have levelled up, what next?

The presence of the Emperor Star and Dragon Virtue together brings you access to Resources. The Dragon Virtue is a nobleman star. Specifically, the Dragon Virtue is a problem-solving star. The Emperor Star, on the other hand, is a leadership star.

There are many characteristics associated with the concept of leadership among which are communications skills, transparency, and vision. However, if you were to really stop and think about it, the most important leadership role is to solve problems. In order to solve problems, a leader must first be resourceful.

This is what 2023 is trying to tell you. You have been given access to Resources. It’s your job to define what type of resources you need and take the steps necessary to bring them to you. Let’s not just think about resources in monetary terms. Resource can be time, money, other people’s skill, other people’s knowledge, other people’s time, and many more.

Which leads to the natural next question: what’s the easiest way to access other people’s resources?

GRAND DUKE COMBINATION

The literal translation of the Grand Duke Combination says this: Wealth through partnership. Therefore, in 2023, the Dog has the opportunity to create partnerships or alliances in order to share resources and more importantly, access other people’s resource.  Which brings us back to the Emperor Star and Dragon Virtue – there is a need to put ourselves in a position to leverage on other people’s resources.

BRUTAL DEFEAT

So why, in the name of woof, are we squirrelling kibbles like a squirrel hoarding nuts for winter?

The Brutal Defeat is like the stock market. It describes a volatile situation. Big up; big down!

We don’t need the stars to tell us that the current situation, particularly the political and economic landscape, is quite challenging right now. With the Brutal Defeat, those with the Dog may be more ‘vulnerable’ to such fluctuations. Hence, the need to be resourceful.

DISASTER SHA, SKY SHA, AND DARK SKY

This group is where the crisis management skills come in.

The Disaster Sha hints at the presence of a potential crisis that will require hands-on leadership. You need to get involved. Basically, this could be a problem that only you can solve.

On the other hand, the Sky Sha hints at potential relationship problems or illnesses caused by issues in our environment. In other words, Feng Shui problems. Example: if some gung-ho neighbour decides to renovate near the East or South East sector of our home, inadvertently triggering either Star 2 (the illness star) or Star 3 (the arguments star).

Finally, the Dark Sky is also a disaster warning. It can also mean virus attack. So of course, please try to stay away from places like hospitals. You could also think about stepping up on your cyber security.

When we put these three together (Disaster Sha, Sky Sha, and Dark Sky), it seems like the Dog really has to face a lot of ‘disasters’ this year.

While they may be considered as negative stars, let’s not forget that people with strong crisis management skills are the ones who command the top dollars!

DOG 2023: SUGGESTED CAREER CHECKLIST

Let’s start with the Disaster Sha. Any employee who can solve crisis is invaluable and irreplaceable. This is your opportunity to position yourself in that light.

Using the Disaster Sha in a positive way is a lot like being the Year Breaker or even the Grand Duke. Hands on leadership is required. I cannot promise you that it will be easy. Neither can I promise you that it will be pleasant.

To side-track a little, did you know that some of us are literally born with this Sha in our natal charts? It doesn’t mean we enjoy dealing with crisis, but somehow, it makes us a dab hand at those situations.

What I’m trying to do here, is to shift your mindset. Instead of dreading the arrival of the ‘impending Disaster Sha’… stay alert for your chances to turn a crisis into an opportunity.

Again, I won’t belabour the part about being resourceful. But really, do note that that is the key to using your positive stars in 2023.

DOG 2023: SUGGESTED BUSINESS CHECKLIST

Business owners may probably find it easier to use the Dog’s positive stars. Because you already have leverage. Therefore, this would be a good year to consider partnerships or cross-selling.

If you are not in the business of crisis management, then with the presence of the Disaster Sha, Sky Sha and Dark Sky, I would urge you to make sure that your insurance coverage is up to date?

And finally, at the risk of sounding like a broken gramophone… with the Brutal Defeat hanging about, no risky ventures, please!

What about Dog in the Day Pillar which governs you and your personal relationships? In your personal capacity, you now have access to resourceful people.

For those who are single, a Grand Duke Combination could potentially bring a new relationship into your Life. But, you need to be open to doing the activities that attracts a new relationship to you. You need to be doing your part! If you do nothing but watch Netflix at home every night, Grand Duke Combination or not, nothing’s going to happen. Remember, these are not promises. They are just opportunities or possibilities.

But more importantly, with the Sky Sha and Dark Sky, have fun de-cluttering. Remove all those old and broken stuff that you have lying around thinking that ‘one day’ I will repair it or need it or use it. Especially things that are connected to negative memories. This may be a good year to say good bye to them.

As for the Dog in the hour which represents your staff, your children, investment, ideas, legacy, hopes and dreams.

Let’s start with the more prosaic first… your staff. Some of the people working for you may have access to resources that can be invaluable to you. This is crucial particularly if your natural leadership style leans towards the bureaucratic and hierarchical style. Someone on your team has got the resources and skills of an effective crisis manager. Look for that person.

For investments? Grand Duke Combination can mean joint investments! But with the Brutal Defeat… as always… nothing speculative please!

2023 CHINESE ZODIAC: ROOSTER

If you have the Rooster in your Bazi Chart, come 2023, it’s time to take on the Year Breaker role.

Since around 2019, the Rooster had been blessed with a run of positive stars. However, in this crucial Year Breaker period, unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of external support. Almost akin to a temporary feast-famine cycle. In other words, without external support, it’s up to you to create your opportunities in 2023.

THE ROOSTER IN 2023

YEAR BREAKER

A Year Breaker is but a fancy name for a clash of energies affecting your Bazi Chart. A clash is very straight forward. It simply means, change! Often viewed as a negative, because from the traditional perspective, change is always unwelcome. A good life in the olden days, literally translates into a long and boring life.

But in today’s world, a Year Breaker brings power to propel us out of our plateau. Without change, there can be no growth.

A Year Breaker is only negative when we resist change. If you open yourself up to change, and learn to reframe your perspectives (think opportunities, not problems; think challenges, not obstacles) you may find that 2023 could be an exciting and fulfilling year.

Because this Rooster-Rabbit clash is clashing outwards (your Metal clashing out to the Wood), the good news is, there is some element of control which signifies that you still get to decide which aspects of your life needs changing.

But there are signs that maybe, you will face some internal resistance to change.

OBSTACLES, PRISON INMATES AND SKY SADNESS

Under the influence of the Obstacles star, you may be more easily influenced by the negativity out there. Somehow, you are more willing or susceptible to negativity which may start a downward spiral.

If you find yourself sucked in by the Obstacles star, the Prison Inmates may also be activated. This star describes a feeling of entrapment, of feeling physically, mentally or even emotionally trapped. And that is when the Sky Sadness (representing depression and other emotional issues), comes along to join the pity-party.

Together, the Obstacles, Prison Inmates and Sky Sadness stars combine to form the sunk-cost fallacy. More on this later.

GREAT CONSUMER

The Year Breaker comes hand in hand with its twin, the Great Consumer. It represents an increase in expenses. If the Year Breaker represents problems, then the Great Consumer is the opportunity to use money to resolve those problems. Therefore, it is always best to keep some budget aside for contingencies.

But where could this money possibly be needed? There are some clues.

CALAMITY SHA

The Calamity Sha is a disaster star. It could mean that you somehow find yourself trapped in a disaster area such as floods, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, etc! It could also mean potential damages to your property or home. Therefore, as you begin the year, why not take the trouble to inspect your home for any damages that you can repair immediately. Since the Calamity Sha is in the Rooster, prioritize areas in the West sector of your house.

SALTY POOL

The other way that money could flow out? Salty Pool – the star of instant gratification which translates to money flowing out due to impulse purchases.

However, there is some good news here. The Salty Pool is actually a type of Peach Blossom star. It’s often viewed also as a negative due to its connotations of unbridled lusts or desires. If you are able to control the effects of the Salty Pool, it can act like a Peach Blossom star, and increase your desirability and likability.

JADE HALL AND MONTH EMPTINESS

But is there support? Yes! The Jade Hall signifies that something you own, be it a material thing, asset, investment, knowledge, skill, talent, anything really… has increased in value.

Perhaps more importantly, you also have the support of the Month Emptiness. This is a rather neutral star. What it does is that it connects us to the universal energy. It is, in fact, a wish-fulfilling star. Its presence is asking you to connect to your inner self or higher self.

But why would I describe a wish-fulfilling star as neutral? Shouldn’t they be good? It depends! When given the chance for your thoughts to manifest your reality, it’s only a good thing when you are positive thinker! Negative thinkers will find the reality manifested is as unpleasant as they expected!

A clash to the Year Pillar is quite easy to deal with. List down all the energy vampires, takers, whiners, and complainers in your friend list… and delete, block, unfollow!

MONTH PILLAR

What if the Rooster is your Month Pillar that represents your career and business? Look for certain parts of your job or business that is now redundant and keeping you tied down. 2023 may be the time to divest and prioritize more time on your core skills or core business.

DAY PILLAR

Rooster 2023

Because the Day Pillar represents our close relationships, certain parts of your lifestyle or household routine can be changed for the better. A second honeymoon, anyone?

HOUR PILLAR

Rooster 2023

Rooster in the Hour Pillar which governs our children, employees, investments, ideas or ideals. In terms of employees, your staff could be getting comfortable in their roles and getting set in their ways. Perhaps it’s time for a reshuffle to challenge everyone to take on new growth.

ROOSTER 2023: SUGGESTED CAREER CHECKLIST

The first rule of the Year Breaker, be willing to drop the redundant roles. Remember the sunk-cost fallacy? Sometimes, we cling on to roles that are no longer serving our career growth. Often, we do this for no other reason apart from the fact that we’ve been doing that for years. Perhaps you have outgrown them? Is it time to pass it to someone more junior?

Secondly, of course, please budget for contingencies. If you feel that you can do so, consider allocating some funds to invest in yourself! Maybe it’s time to acquire a different or new skill?

Thirdly, beware the sunk-cost fallacy that could be keeping you tied to a miserable job. It’s up to you if you want to change jobs this year, but at least start taking steps towards changing your perspective of your career.

Finally, with the Jade Hall, identify your super skill. When negotiating for an increment or promotion, this is your leverage!

ROOSTER 2023: SUGGESTED BUSINESS CHECKLIST

For the Business owners, let’s start by looking into the sunk cost fallacy. What is no longer serving your business? Are they projects? Divisions? Clients? Products? Services?

Next, something has grown in value. Your job is to identify what that something is. It could be physical assets such as property that is owned by your business. Their value has matured and this may be the time to divest and keep your cash flow healthy?

Thirdly, with the Year Breaker, be willing to pivot your product or service.

And finally, with the Great Consumer, Calamity Sha and Salty Pool, please keep an eye on your cash flow and stay liquid for any contingencies.

THE ROOSTER 2023 IN A NUTSHELL

When this collection of stars are seen as a whole, they are encouraging a sense of detachment. Mind you, every practitioner will have different interpretations because we all have different perspectives. While the core effects of the stars remain the same, every one of us will have a different view of how to use these stars. To me, they spell detachment.

With attachment, change can be very painful. But here’s the thing, you become very powerful, when you learn to detach. Because in that detachment comes objectivity and rationality. Am I asking you to intellectualize your feelings? Yes, a little! For 2023 at least, for the Rooster, there needs to be a rather zen-like approach to life.

The Monkey in 2023 may not have a whole boat-load of stars, but the good news is, they are all still imminently usable! But before we get any further, how was your Year Breaker in 2022? I hope the changes you made had brought you satisfactory growth. Because with 2023 looming, it’s time to take things to the next level!

MONKEY 2023: CAREER DEVELOPMENT

A Year Breaker in 2022 may mean that your job scope has changed in some ways. For some people, it may mean changing your job, for some a change in job scope, for some a promotion, for others who may want to slow down, could be a reduction in responsibilities – it all depends on your objectives and goals at that particular time.

If you work for a large multi-national corporation, the Heavenly Horse may signify opportunity to work with other divisions or colleagues from other countries. Or, if you work in a smaller organization, it could mean that you now have the opportunity to take on some responsibilities that are new and unfamiliar to you. Perhaps those new responsibilities, because this is the Heavenly Horse, could involve more travel or more contact with a different segment of the market. Example: perhaps you are an Engineer. In 2022, you transited to become a Sales Engineer. So now you have two portfolios. You need to sell, and you need to deliver. This new Sales role may require you to travel more, attend more meetings – this now becomes an opportunity for career growth.

Now that you have created the chance to be exposed to a different type of customers, here comes the time to use the two problem-solving stars to identify opportunities in the market. What are the problems they face? How can you, and your organization, solve it? These two stars can also be good for research – because when we research, we are looking for problems to solve!

So now that you have taken on a new role, perhaps some investment in your personal presentation, how you dress and look, is required. Hence, the Lesser Consumer. Because this is a new pivot, keep your plans fluid for the Death Charm. Make time for family. Don’t get so busy working that you neglect your family’s well-being.

The Red Chamber is a star of likability. It’s short-term in nature, but that’s fine. What you could do, is perhaps open up several days in your calendar every month and use those time specifically to do demos or explain your services to potential customers!

But what about the Robbery Sha? In this instance, this could represent someone ‘stealing’ your ideas or even your sales lead. While sharing is caring, please be mindful not to share your secret sauce.

The goal here is to get you flying in your new role and what awaits? National Treasure! The opportunity to be recognized as a talent in your industry. Again… what are we positioning for? In 2024, promotion stars available.

MONKEY 2023: BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Regardless if you are own a large enterprise, or an SME, or you operate as a solopreneur. In 2022, changes happened. As difficult as those changes may have been, I hope it led to positive growth for you.

Now that you have pivoted, what now? It’s time to expand or enhance the reach of your product or service. The presence of the Heavenly Horse signifies the opportunity to reach a different market segment. This is not another pivot. This is a tweak. Example: if you are a Wood Day Master, perhaps you can apply your current process or system to a different market?

Next, engage the Earth Relief and Monthly Virtue to find new problems that your product or service can solve. What other type of consumers can use your product or service?

And this is where the Lesser Consumer comes in – investing into marketing campaigns to reach that new market. If money has to be spent, if expenses have to be incurred, spend it wisely!

The Death Charm in your case as a business owner, is a reminder to keep an eye on your cash flow. To stay liquid so that you have the flexibility to respond to changing business environments.

For the business owners, the presence of the Robbery Sha and Red Chamber seems to suggest that it would be better to do this alone instead of partnering up with people. But there’s a better way to use them individually!

The presence of the Robbery Sha may mean that, from your perspective, a lot of new copycat competitors have entered the market. In other words, the barriers of entry into your market has been lowered. But wait a second… what’s the fastest way to enter a new market? Robbery Sha! You model from the existing players in the market and you spot their gap! What about the Red Chamber? You create a line of products or services that can be a one-off use or relationship. That means, your business relationship with your clients is not a long-term relationship. Therefore, your Lesser Consumer marketing dollars is spent to create a constant stream of new customers as opposed to returning customers.

Since there is a chance to reach to a different market segment through the Heavenly Horse, business owners could consider investing some money into content marketing if you have the Monkey in your Year Pillar. As the first contact between us and the world at large, the Year Pillar can be regarded as our ‘advertising’ pillar. Therefore, this new investment could be geared towards generating a different type of content that is calculated to appeal to a different market segment.

For Career Professionals, you could volunteer some of your time to do knowledge sharing, run workshops, or even conduct internal training within your own industry. Sharing our knowledge or expertise is one way to engage the National Treasure which is all about becoming recognized as a talent in our field.

Alternatively, this can also mean that you may have the opportunity to meet and connect with talented high flyers, provided you take the opportunity to network and build relationships with them. People whom you can observe, and perhaps even model their systems and how they operate.

MONTH PILLAR

For business owners, if the Monkey governs your Month Pillar, you may notice an influx of competitors into your market. Now is the time to stay ahead of the game by identifying new problems to solve and investing some marketing budget into creating new demand for your product or service.

If you prefer to be pro-active, you could make the first move by expanding the reach of your product or service.

DAY PILLAR

If you are single and looking, and you have the Monkey in your Day Pillar, do be alert for love scams. Of course, this is not a prohibition against dating. It’s just a caution to trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right…

Apart from that, will there be opportunities to meet new people? Yes! The Red Chamber is a star of likability. Use it to create more diversity in your personal circle, go out and meet new people, have fun! But always, make sure to protect yourself and stay safe.

If you want to use these stars for your career growth, personal likability has increased! Allow yourself to voice out more often, contribute more solutions.

For those who are in permanent relationships, use the problem-solving stars to resolve ongoing issues. Don’t allows problems room to fester in the relationship. Come 2023, the Goat is really the G.O.A.T – Greatest of all time – especially for the career professionals. And to really use the positive stars? Group collaboration (not partnership!) will be the key!

ABOUT THE 2023 CHINESE ZODIAC SERIES

In creating this new series, I’ve endeavoured to shift your perspectives of the positive and negative stars. They are neither promises nor guarantees. Instead, these are tools given to you for 2023, and it’s up to you to choose which one works better for you. The results become more obvious when we match our actions to the effects.

And when we learn to use these stars, that is when life happens for you, instead of happening to you.

Therefore, this post will include descriptions of the effects of the stars, followed by some ideas (or suggestions, if you will), on how the stars can be used. Please note that critical thinking is required on your part. Because without looking at the full information from your unique Bazi Chart, the ideas cannot be customized and must be kept as broad as possible.

GOAT: 2022 RECAP

Of the positive stars in 2022, the National Treasure would have a little more weightage as it signifies the opportunity to be recognized as a talent in our respective fields. There was also the Sky Happiness which represented networking opportunities. But let’s be honest here, how many of us really enjoy networking?

But networking or no… somehow, your contribution has been recognized. Who knows? Maybe you even won an award? People are now aware of your capabilities. So what next?

THE GOAT IN 2023

THREE STAGES

2023 brings the ultimate of the promotion stars – the Three Stages. It’s akin to步步高陞 (literal translation: upward mobility with every step). The Three Stages may manifest as an offer to take on more responsibilities, or can represent the opportunity to contribute more. Either way we look at it, that’s what a promotion really is!

EIGHT SEATS

This promotion brought about by the Three Stages should ideally give access to the Eight Seats – access to be a part of the decision-makers. Put these two together, and it could either be the opportunity to join something like a Board of Directors, or a top management team, or in some really large organizations, a think-tank that reports solely to the President to help him or her with the decision-making process.

But please, do not assume this promotion or invitation comes automatically. Some action on your part is required. At the very minimum, there is a need to signal your readiness as well as an indication of what you bring to the table and what you offer.

FLYING BLADE

But what could disrupt the process? Well, there is always a possibility that your rise in the ranks may incur envy and gossip. This is the meaning of the Flying Blade. Rumours and gossip swirling around you. These gossips need not be about us. The Flying Blade represents a caution to not launch the first blade, to not get involved with the gossips and rumours.

FIVE GHOST

The more serious, would be the Five Ghost which represents suspicion and fear. This would be a natural outcome of the Flying Blade. Suddenly, people you thought were your friends are now saying mean things about you. It makes one distrustful, or even worse if it causes a loss of self confidence.

YELLOW FLAG

Focus on the work at hand. The influence of the Yellow Flag causes anxiety and depression. Who wouldn’t be anxious if constantly surrounded by ‘flying blades’? If you find yourself in a toxic environment, you may want to consider documenting everything. Had a conversation with someone? Follow up with an email to ensure that all parties are on the same page. This is a self protective measure to avoid becoming a scapegoat for the Flying Blade.

BLOOD KNIFE

The Blood Knife is more health-related, and typically points at the possibility of bloodshed such as perhaps a minor surgery. But note that it just points to a possibility. If you are careful while handling knives and sharp objects, or when you are driving, then who’s to say it has to happen?

RELIEF GOD AND SKY RELIEF

But now comes the all-important question. On the one hand, we have an opportunity for a promotion. Yet on the other hand, we are faced with naysayers and detractors. So it seems we will need some external support. This comes in the form of two problem-solving stars – the Relief God and Sky Relief.

To activate both the problem solving stars require the appropriate action to complement their effects. In other words, keep your attention tightly on solving the underlying problems instead of getting enmeshed in the politics.

ELEGANT SEAL

The Elegant Seal is a powerful star that influences our creativity and ability to think out of the box. It’s the star of the artiste and levels up our strategizing capabilities. It also represents the intellectual capacity to master a new skill, an ultimate skill, that would take your career or business to the next level. To use this star effectively requires concerted effort to upskill or to focus your attention at the strategic level.

INSTABILITY

With the two problem-solving stars supported by the Elegant Seal, what types of problems could we possibly be asked to solve? The Instability star holds a clue! As its name implies, Instability brings volatility. It could be volatile economic problems. It could also be fluctuating sales cycles? Any one who can solve these problems in any organization, would absolutely deserve to be a part of the management team.

LITIGATION AND YEAR CHARM

Alternatively, you could be called to resolve problems relating to documentation, compliance or customer satisfaction. This is signified by the presence of Litigation and Year Charm, both of whom imply legal issues resulting from disputes.

FLYING CHARM

The Flying Charm is also of a legal nature. In this case, it denotes penalties and fines. Therefore, please be reminded to keep your documentation in proper order and ensure that everything is above board. On a personal level, with the Flying Charm coming into the Goat in 2023, it is imperative to keep our tax returns properly filed.

For example, is the industry’s growth hampered because the key players are constantly trying to undercut or undermine each other? Do you foresee any problems caused by this situation? If the Goat is in your Month Pillar which governs your career and business, these stars can amp up your level of ambitions. Suddenly, the Goat feels extra ambitious in 2023 – willing to take the pain of acquiring that ultimate skill, willing to put in the extra hours to attend meetings and resolve problems.

For the career professionals, this would be the best time to volunteer to lead a special project at work. This is best applied if you work for a large multi-national organization where you collaborate with colleagues from other divisions or countries.

For the business owners, create opportunities where you can either cross-sell or collaborate with a bigger brand. Or, you could position yourself to be an advisor perhaps for another organization.

What if you have the Goat in your Day Pillar? If you are married, from your perspective, you feel that your spouse has been given a lot of career opportunities in 2023. If that’s the case, your role would be to encourage, uplift, inspire and motivate your spouse to make the most of these opportunities. Will there be fights? Maybe! Especially if the level of ambition is one-sided.

What if you want to use these stars for yourself? Many charitable organizations are helmed by people of influence. If you choose the charity wisely and volunteer to become a committee member of certain charity boards, you can access plenty of decision makers. So you could consider picking a cause that is close to your heart and volunteer your time and expertise. As you give, so you receive.

If you have the Horse in your Bazi Chart, 2023 could be the year to unleash your inner entrepreneur and play the role of the disruptor.

These days, we seem to use the term ‘entrepreneur’ and ‘business owner’ synonymously. But there’s a distinctive line between the two. People who bring their unique ideas to run a startup company are known as entrepreneurs. Business owners, on the other hand, start a business on an existing concept or idea. Business owners make their place in the market with their efforts and dedication, whereas entrepreneurs creates the market for their own business.

And for those of you with the Horse in your Bazi Charts, this may be the year you make the leap between the two!

HORSE: 2022 RECAP

Your three top stars in 2022 were the General Star, Golden Lock, and Three Stages. These three, when acting together, gives you access to the movers, shakers and decision-makers.

However, having access is one thing. Building a mutually-beneficial relationship with these movers, shakers, and decision-makers are a whole different ballgame. This is where the energies of 2023 come into play.

THE HORSE IN 2023

SKY HAPPINESS

At the most basic level, the Sky Happiness represents the existence of happy events. In the ancient days, these usually refer to landmark life events such as weddings, birth of children, those type of stuff. Today, the Sky Happiness points to the opportunities to be a part of parties and celebrations. But… we’re talking about using the stars, right?

So how about… instead of sitting home and waiting for invitations, with the Sky Happiness in your chart, why don’t we be the ones to organize the event and bring people together? This is what the Sky Happiness is great for – bringing people together in a joyful and harmonious environment. So remember all those new contacts that 2022 brought you? Why not create mini events to bring them together so that you can have the opportunity to nurture your relationship with them in a less stressful environment? That’s an idea!

MOON

Who we hang out with can literally change our outlook. If we spend time with these entrepreneurs, leaders and decision-makers, inevitably, this will give us the chance to develop our own ideas. This is where the Moon comes in. Apart from being a traditional nobleman star, the Moon has a specific benefit – it is the star of entrepreneurial ideas.

So now, we have both a network as well as the seed of a business idea. And by the way, it has been forecasted that come 2023, even more people will start their side gigs. This may be particularly so for the Horse because…

PIERCING ROPE

As I write this, economic pressure is mounting everywhere. With inflation going through the roof, the economy shrinking, many businesses will be looking for ways to tighten their belts and maybe even downsize. This is what the Piercing Rope represents – fear and insecurity brought on by external pressures. These could be political, economical, or social, or a myriad of other external factors.

HOOK SPIRIT AND GREAT ASSEMBLY

Triggered by the fear and insecurity, the next two negative stars are the ones to pay attention to. The Hook Spirit represents the unresolved problems from the past. It’s a little like an unclosed chapter begging for closure. The Great Assembly is like an endless infinity loop, like a broken gramophone. When these two come together, the influence they create is the tendency to play out negative memories, or project past failures… on a loop.

REST GOD

So, there is opportunity; and there is pressure. Your job, with the Rest God, is to keep physically and mentally fit. The Rest God acts by enhancing our physical and mental well-being. But it needs a little nudge. It doesn’t work on its own. Note that they didn’t call this the Lazy God? Using the Rest God requires the corresponding effort to keep ourselves in good shape. So go to the gym; prioritize taking walks in the morning; or maybe martial arts is your thing? Anything, really, that keeps you trim and fit!

Why is this so important? Ever noticed that all successful people have one thing in common? High energy levels! They don’t walk around sighing and moaning? They’re too busy. Once we manage to dial up our own physical energy, we will automatically sound more convincing when we talk, our minds become more agile, better focused, and we are able to accomplish more in a single day. In other words, maintaining our physical energy makes us better and more convincing leaders.

HEAVENLY OFFICER

Which takes us to the Heavenly Officer which represents the ability to garner support for your leadership skills. This nobleman star can be used in many different ways. For employees, it can bring promotion luck. It’s also good for academics, by the way. For business owners, this can mean a good reputation. Now, a good reputation by itself, may not be so useful? However, the Heavenly Officer means more than that. It means that our customers or our business partners become our noble people by putting their trust in us, and following our lead.

At the beginning of this post, I made a clear distinction between a business owner and an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs creates their own markets. Think of disruptor businesses like Uber or AirBnB. When they came up with that idea, it was revolutionary. They needed the trust from their customers (both drivers and users) to adapt to this new way of doing business.

So yes, Heavenly Officer can represent customers – customers who are willing to follow your lead. But to benefit from this star, you must always remember that we owe it to them to always give them our very best.

HORSE 2023: IN A NUTSHELL

Now when we put ALL these stars together, it tells a story. It says that, in the face of a volatile economy (Piercing Rope), the ones who spot the opportunities (Moon) and has the resources in the form of networks (Sky Happiness), could potentially overcome the self-limiting mindset (Hook Spirit and Great Assembly). It also says that we can differentiate ourselves by the energy we radiate (Rest God)

Because the end goal for 2023, is to gain support for your leadership. To have people follow you. Customers who are your Heavenly Officers.

Where is all these positioning heading to? To 2024 where you should be in place to solve a problem of a higher value.

WHERE IS YOUR HORSE?

If you have the Horse in your Year which governs your social networks, industry, contacts, social media followers, acquaintances and not-so-close friends. In this case, the most likely scenario is that from your perspective, the industry is vulnerable to volatile economic conditions or even downturn. Alternatively, the people you know are, most of them, feeling pressured by the external environment.

Could you then, instead of waiting for invitations from the Sky Happiness, create regular small gatherings that bring diverse people together to talk, exchange ideas, maybe even explore working together? These could even be fund-raising events. If you are a Fire Day Master (either Bing or Ding), I would certainly at least explore this idea.

The Heavenly Officer is not technically an investment star. But, from the perspective of a business looking for seed money, aren’t investors noble people too? Noble people who are willing to buy into our ideas?

MONTH PILLAR

If the Horse governs your Month, it could be that your own business or the organization you work for is feeling the pressure of a volatile and unpredictable economy.

Let’s talk about career professionals first. In this case, you would be hesitant to leave the security of a full time career for the uncertainties of the business world, wouldn’t you? However, the Moon star has already given you an idea that you would like to pursue. With the Heavenly Officer, this could be a good time to get your research and business plan together, and present it to your boss. Ask him or her to invest in your idea and let you work on it in exchange for equity in the new business. Now, suddenly, you go from being just an employee, to having a stake in your boss’s business. That’s what they mean when they say intrapreneur.

Alternatively, be the one who leads change in your organization. Textbook interpretation of the intrapreneur: a manager within a company who promotes innovative product development and marketing.

What about Business Owners with the Horse in your Month? If your business is reliant on equipment, here, please take note of the Great Assembly. While there may be a need to cut down on unnecessary spending, maintenance must be top priority because the Great Assembly’s literal definition is a warning of equipment failure. No skimping on equipment maintenance if you have the Horse in your month pillar. Because equipment breakdown will cost you more in lost business than any amount of maintenance.

DAY PILLAR

What if the Horse falls in your day? If you are in a committed relationship, your personal relationships or spouse might be feeling the economic pressure and thereby, causing stress within the relationship. What sort of stress? Most likely, there may be more instances of arguments caused by old grievances triggered by monetary issues.

This could be a good opportunity for you to make some changes within your organizational culture. A great opportunity, in fact, to convert ‘mere employees’ into a fighting team with an entrepreneurial mindset. Train your staff to have entrepreneurial mindset by using the Sky Happiness to create team bonding events.

In terms of investments, these stars may represent opportunities to pick up some new investments or even new businesses for cheap.
