#17 GENG CHEN/METAL DRAGON (庚辰): THE GIFT OF RAW POWER

In the study of the 60 pillars, there are four super powerful pillars known as Fui Kong/Hui Gang 魁罡. The raw power of the Geng Chen (庚辰) numbers as one of them.

First, a paragraph on the concept of Fui Kong. Sometimes translated as ‘Bright Star’, these four pillars are viewed the General Pillars. These pillars are infused with nobility. They represent toughness, hardiness, and a huge capacity.

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: OVERVIEW

Of all the Geng pillars, the Geng Chen (庚辰)  is the only one that emits Noble Qi. Think of the durability and toughness of an iron shield. This is an individual who is both an original thinker as well as an action-taker.

Seated on your Resource, Output and Wealth, the Geng Chen (庚辰)  or Metal Dragon Day Master is typically intelligent, knowledgeable and frequently financially successful.

A driven survivor, the Geng Chen (庚辰)  at a healthy level, will have unshakeable faith in your own abilities, unwavering in pursuit of your goals, and confident in your ability to turn challenges into opportunities.

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: STRENGTHS

Geng Chen Metal Dragon
  1. The Qi flow for the Geng Chen (庚辰) begins with your Wu Earth (戊) Resource Star. Apart from bringing stability to the Geng Chen pillar, the Wu Earth Resource Star is also the foundation of your ability to literally absorb information.
  2. Your Wu Earth (戊) Resource Star continuously produces your Geng Metal (庚) Day Master. Of the 10 Day Masters, the Geng Metal is known to be a pro-active action taker. The production relationship between the Wu Earth and your Geng Metal, very simply, reflects a person who is able to turn knowledge into action.
  3. As you take action, your Geng Metal (庚) Day Master will attract more opportunities by way of your Gui Water (癸) Output star. This star gives the Geng Chen Day Master a degree of much-needed flexibility. It cloaks you with the mettle to challenge the status quo and is largely responsible for your ‘fall-forward’ philosophy.
  4. Finally, the energy of the Geng Chen pillar ends with your Yi Wood (乙) Wealth star. This star brings with it the ability to plan and manage resource. It other words, this Geng Metal Day Master is no longer working blindly. Instead, you frequently work towards a plan.

Let’s summarize. When we put all the elements together, we have a Geng Chen Day Master who is resourceful, action-oriented, yet capable of flexible planning.

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The strengths of the Geng Chen (庚辰) Day Master can also become your vulnerabilities. So awesome are your capacities that very often, the Geng Chen feels compelled to create success on your own terms. While this is a great trait to have, I want you to be aware of just one thing: your insistence on doing things your own way may lead to a number of uphill battles in your journey through life.

That’s it! Is it really a vulnerability? Not really. Just being aware of this tendency would be enough. The question to frequently check-in with yourself would be: am I making things unnecessarily harder for myself?

GENG CHEN (庚辰) METAL DRAGON: HOW YOU PRESENT

Aggressive. The Geng Chen (庚辰) Day Master typically will have the reputation of one with a strong spirit of competition. However, this does not mean that the Geng Chen would automatically reject teamwork. On the contrary, you are actually OK with either working solo or in a group. Of course, you would prefer to be the one in the driving seat!

But get past the competitive and rather domineering front, and many people will delight in a barely-hidden trait of the Geng Chen. Like the shield that represents you, the Geng Chen is extremely protective of those they care about and the less fortunate members of society.

GENG CHEN, BUT BETTER

Since your Wu Earth (戊) Resource Star is foundation of the Geng Chen, then the task of becoming Geng Chen, But Better is simply to strengthen that base. Therefore, an easy suggestion would be to ensure that you continuously build up a storehouse of wide-ranging knowledge. Get curious and stay curious! Learn a little about everything. Learn enough for you to start taking action. Because at the end of the day, that’s what all Geng Metal Day Masters are built for!

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#14 DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: THE GIFT OF HOPE

In the Bazi calendar cycle, the Chou (丑) month always represents the end of winter. The ice is melting but it is still cold, and dark. Sloshing about in that murky darkness can be pretty tiring. But what if there were to be a bonfire glowing in the horizon? Would you not walk towards it? That’s the picture the Ding Chou (丁丑) or Fire Ox represents – a veritable beacon of hope.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: OVERVIEW

Like the welcoming bonfire, the Ding Chou (丁丑) or Fire Ox Day Master is always kind and considerate to everyone. This pillar, when awakened, can become a veritable trail blazer. Especially when you are fired up by your own strong convictions to make the world a better place.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: STRENGTHS

  1. The energy flow of this pillar begins with the Ding Fire (丁) Day Master itself. Here is the true original thinker. Lacking any form of resource within the pillar itself, this Ding Fire (丁) Day Master must rely on either your own ability to re-ignite or find resource from the other pillars in your chart. Because of that, the Ding Chou (丁丑) Day Master is an insatiably curious creature. You enjoy expanding your mind. You will literally consume and internalize information in any form.
  2. However, internalizing information is one thing. When your Ji Earth (己) Output Star kicks into gear, you will be able to re-brand that knowledge with your own unique stamp. That is how you offer enlightenment to those around you. What’s special about this particular combination is that your way of encouraging change and offering enlightenment is done in a very refined and gentle manner. The Ding Chou (丁丑) is always very sensitive to the feelings of others. You inherently understand that change that is forced on people is only temporary. Change that is created through acceptance is permanent. This is perhaps, your biggest strength.
  3. Your visionary Xin Metal (辛) Wealth Star lends lustre to your ability to inspire hope – by bringing depth and clarity to your vision. This star represents your talent to lead by vision. Not only are you able to ignite hope, but you also effect change by showing people the possibilities of what is truly possible.
  4. All that inspirational hope-giving will be just hot air if there are no subsequent actions taken. This is where your Gui Water (癸) Killings Star comes in to play. Problems will always crop up on the road to change. This Gui Water (癸) Killings Star helps you persevere through the problems by seeing them as challenges into of obstacles.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: VULNERABILITIES

However, there is a dichotomy inherent in the Ding Chou (丁丑) or Fire Ox that you must be aware of. The Ding Chou is always caught between your own powerful talents and your own sensitivity towards the feelings of others.  As long as the chasm between these two traits are not bridged, the Ding Chou is likely to lack the high rate of ambition and drive exhibited by the other Ding pillars.

Therefore, the key to success for the Ding Chou is to maintain a positive and singular focus. This is the very persistence and tenacity you need to embody the real beacon of hope for those around you. Your success is one that is created through a slow build. Your success will not be a flash-in-the-pan.

DING CHOU (丁丑)/FIRE OX: HOW YOU PRESENT

Friendly and affectionate, the Ding Chou accepts one and all without prejudice. People are drawn to you by the compassion that radiates out of this pillar. On a side note, they also love your off-beat ideas!

There is a need to learn how to discern and filter out those who truly need help or are just there to take advantage of your compassion. The Ding Chou is very much affected by the company you keep and your environment. Make a conscious effort to place yourself in a supportive and encouraging environment. This is where the Ding Chou shines the brightest. Avoid, at all costs, toxic and negative environments. Negativity affects all of us in various degrees. But the sensitivity of the Ding Chou means that prolonged exposure to toxic environments will leave you discouraged and fearful.

DING CHOU, BUT BETTER

The Ding Chou pillar is deeply imaginative. Making a conscious effort to stay ahead of progressive trends is the best way to help this pillar shine. Go in-depth into emerging new trends, research, follow up on the work of thought leaders, and as you do so, you will find that you have what it takes to become a trail blazer in your own right.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#12 YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: THE GIFT OF GRACE

Pictured as flowering aquatic plants, think lotus, water lillies or even those magnificent underwater kelp forests, the Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig pillar is undoubtedly one of the more attractive of the 60 pillars. If there is to be one word to sum up the Yi Hai, it would be the gift of Grace.

Stripping away all spiritual or religious connotations off the word, the verb grace very simply means to have a certain finesse or poise or an attractive manner of behaving. So… physically attractive, intelligent, daring and possessing of an almost incurable wanderlust… what can we do with this pillar?

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: OVERVIEW

The hidden roots of the aquatic plant, buried deep underwater, represents a person who is unaware of the talents and potential hidden beneath the surface. It’s not uncommon for many Yi Hai (乙亥) Day Masters to spend a lifetime in search of themselves.

Well, search no more. Let me lay it out right here for you.

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: STRENGTHS

  1. The Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig Day Master exhibits all the graces of the Yi Wood (乙) Day Element – kindly, unassuming, and unaffected. Most of all, you possess the flexibility and versatility that is the core of the Yi Wood. They say that only dead fishes go with the flow. Not so with the Yi Hai who naturally knows how to thrive in uncertain waters. You are the ultimate survivalist whose soft approach to life gives you a high level of adaptability and the knack for making the most of any situation. This in-born humility of the Yi Hai is a key factor in your success. Unlike other harder and prouder pillars, you are able to gracefully accept help from all quarters.
  2. The humility of the Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig Day Master is genuine. As is the deep intelligence hidden below represented by your Ren Water (壬) Resource Star. Sustained by this intelligence star, absorbing new skills should be as easy as breathing for you. If you ever find yourself in a sink-or-swim sitch, I have no doubt that the Yi Hai will quickly learn to swim.
  3. Finally, your Jia Wood (甲) Companion star is the hidden anchor that props you up in life. This is the root of your ambition and ability to quickly grasp opportunities that float your way. This Jia Wood Companion star also offers tenacity. However, you will need to make conscious use of this ability. Which leads us to your biggest vulnerability…

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The versatility of the Yi Hai or Wood Pig pillar may manifest as a certain type of wanderlust. Impulsive and impatient, the Yi Hai is always eager to be on the move, constantly searching for new environments where it can thrive.

You find those who stay rooted in one place almost incomprehensible. Because to you, letting go and moving on is so very easy. But, wait! Before you uproot again… ask yourself this – are you moving impulsively out of boredom, frustration, or disappointments?

There is a need here, to develop a persevering attitude, an anchor if you will, to conquer such impulsive behaviour long enough to achieve your goals. That’s where the rooting provided by your Jia Wood (甲) Companion star comes in.

YI HAI (乙亥)/WOOD PIG: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig Day Master is loaded with physical attractiveness, especially the women. This pillar has a magnetizing effect on others. Fun loving and creative, you have the ability to float in and out of diverse social environments and still thrive with grace, poise and finesse. People will tend to find you just a tad emotional and a bit of an oddball. But that’s just a part of the allure of the Yi Hai pillar!

YI HAI, BUT BETTER

The Yi Hai (乙亥) or Wood Pig is a pillar of untapped potential. Remember how I said earlier that many Yi Hai Day Masters spend a lifetime trying to find themselves? Well, find yourself through education, exploration and new experiences. Tap into the immense intellectual potential of this pillar either through formal or informal education.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#10 GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: THE GIFT OF CURIOSITY

Sometimes viewed as an invigorating and cleansing autumn rain, sometimes described as a clear stream flowing over mineral rocks, the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master is curiosity personified.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: OVERVIEW

A sensitive Water pillar at its core, the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster is considered as the most inquisitive of the 60 Pillars. There is a wonderful sense of child-like wonder within this pillar. You have the initiative to explore new concepts and the fearlessness to tread new paths.

How does that come about? Let’s have a look.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: STRENGTHS

The Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster sits on, and is supported by, your Xin Metal (辛) Resource element. This makes you an unconventional learner with a craving for knowledge and new experiences.

It also represents your ability to self-educate. Anything and everything that you are curious about, you will somehow manage to pick up the know-how.

And what a wonderful gift to have! Curious people learn and retain information better. It is also one of the hallmarks of creative thinkers, implying the ability to creatively look beyond the present and imagine possible futures for yourself by coming up with out-of-the-box insights and ideas.

Curiosity also brings with it a greater capacity for personal development, resulting in an individual who is open to other’s point of view.

In your case, this Xin Metal (辛) Resource Element also gives you, the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master, your single-minded ability to focus on the task at hand. It gives you the ability to drill a problem down to its core so that you can resolve it once and for all.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The relationship of the Xin Metal (辛) producing the Gui Water (癸) Day Master may also possibly manifest as a fickle personality. Yes, you have a talent for razor-sharp focus. The problem is, that focus can switch at a moment’s notice. In other words, watch out for that ‘SOS’ – Shiny Object Syndrome.

This SOS Syndrome is usually triggered when you become frustrated or when things are not going your way. While there is nothing really wrong with being fickle, giving in to this trait too often may derail you from your objectives.

The Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster’s biggest lesson in life is to learn how to overcome obstacles and challenges. It is only through adversity that the true potential of the Gui You will shine forth.

GUI YOU (癸酉)/WATER ROOSTER: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master can present as a naïve and carefree individual. Externally, like the slow-moving stream, you like to slow things down and savour every moment that life has to offer.

Again, there is nothing wrong with wanting a slow-paced lifestyle. However, we now live in a society that venerates the fast-mover, the go-getter, the hard-worker. So what I’m trying to say is that, you risk being labelled as ‘lazy’ for no apparent reason.

The purpose of this segment is just to create awareness of the fact that people may label you as laid-back. If this is not a problem for you, then let’s just leave things as they are.

GUI YOU (癸酉), BUT BETTER

Today’s society may look down on those who are laid back, but it puts a premium on the unconventional maverick. Because the Gui You (癸酉) or Water Rooster Day Master is such a curious individual, it is inevitable that you will have a store of amazing ideas that can literally change the world. Share those ideas publicly. Display your mental potential. Be known as a powerhouse for ideas. As a creative thinker! This would be a great way to use all the strengths and perceived vulnerabilities of the Gui You pillar.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#9 REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: THE GIFT OF UNPREDICTABILITY

The Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar can be visualized in two ways. From one perspective, we can see it as a shark or a submarine lurking in the depths of the ocean. From this perspective, we get the feeling of the latent power and deep thinking abilities of the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey.

On the other hand, we could also picture the Ren Shen (壬申) as the sunken Titanic. What feelings come to mind when you hold that picture in your head? Melancholy? Yes. Romantic? Put Hollywood out of your mind, please. There’s nothing romantic about what happened to the Titanic. It was nothing less than a tragedy.

But here’s the beauty of the 60 pillars. The principles of Ying and Yang always applies. Best of all, you – the Day Master – gets to decide how the picture will turn out. So what’s it gonna be if you are a Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master? A shark/submarine or a capsized ship?

Are you having difficulties choosing? Need more information? Sure! As they sang in the animated movie The Little Mermaid, let’s head… Under The Sea.

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: OVERVIEW

Be it a shark, submarine or sunken ship, the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar inevitably carries a sense of depth – intellectual and emotional depth. Capable of extraordinary stillness and intent focus, you frequently startle those around you with your clarity of thought and quick action-taking abilities. Like a shark, you can be idly gliding in one moment, and burst into a ball of frenetic action the next.

Because of that, there will always be a fascinating feel of unpredictability with the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master. People will struggle to classify or label you. Just when they think they’ve got you pegged, a different aspect of your personality or talent floats up to the surface. This amazing strength is uniquely Ren Shen (壬申). And it is both magnetic and mesmerizing.

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: STRENGTHS

The Ren Water (壬) Day Masters are always equated with strong intelligence and resourcefulness. Given the intellectual depth of this Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar, it is not uncommon to find the Ren Shen Day Master with a very specialized skill that requires tremendous intellectual energy. Basically, that’s a roundabout way to say – you are very smart. Like very, very smart!

In this pillar, the Ren Water (壬) Day Master is at the height of its power. Sitting on the Growth Position in the 12 Growth phases makes you a dynamic individual with the ability to easily assimilate complex information.

  1. The energy of the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey pillar begins with the Wu Earth (戊) Influence Star. In addition to bringing much-needed stability and focus to the Ren Shen pillar, this star is the seat of your propulsive willpower and action-taking abilities. It also shapes your win-or-lose attitude towards life. Nothing triggers a Ren Shen Day Master more than a good debate.
  2. The Wu Earth (戊) Influence Star then produces your Geng Metal (庚) Resource Star. This all-important resource element is the lodestone of your originality. This is what makes you such an inspired thinker. Conversation with you is always thought-provoking and intriguing.
  3. Finally, the Geng Metal (庚) Resource Element produces you, the Ren Shen Day Master, and your Ren Water (壬) Companion element. This rooted self-element represents a strong sense of self. It is also the reason why you gravitate towards bouts of self-introspection.

As an aside, if I had a secret, I would most probably entrust it to a Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master. Lock the secret within the depths of the ocean and it will never see the light of day!

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The biggest vulnerability that you, the Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master, must be aware of is that combination of Metal and Water in this pillar. It represents a whirlpool of emotions constantly churning deep within. When a Ren Shen Day Master is down in the dumps, you have a strong tendency to wallow.

This vulnerability can be self-defeating. The whirlpool of emotions goes round and round at the same point, never moving forward, needlessly sucking in all your intellectual energy and willpower.

The trick to overcoming this vulnerability is to first gain awareness. From there, you must learn to recognize the symptoms when the whirlpool starts forming and devise strategies to interrupt those unproductive thought patterns. Exercise or any physical activities could be a viable solution in this instance. So do consider it.

REN SHEN (壬申)/WATER MONKEY: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master can present alternately as either cold and reserved or fun-loving and playful. That’s part of the delightful unpredictability of this Day Master’s make-up.

You are usually quite care-free. The coldness happens when you are preoccupied trying to keep your emotions in check. Sometimes, you give off the wrong impression that you are a bit indecisive and aimless. But watch out when you make up your mind. Boom! That idly gliding shark will pounce into action!

We keep coming back to this unpredictability of the Ren Shen Day Master, don’t we? I really can’t stress it enough. It is such a strong advantage, so why not figure out how to make the best of it.

REN SHEN (壬申), BUT BETTER

When a shark stops swimming it dies. The Ren Shen (壬申) or Water Monkey Day Master sits on a travelling star. You just need to keep moving, both physically and mentally. A Ren Water Day Master is born to connect with people. Even if we are locked down due to Covid, you must continue to create connections and from there, keep growing as an individual and as an intellectual. Because when the movement stops, the whirlpool starts!

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#8 XIN WEI (辛未)/METAL GOAT: THE GIFT OF COMPETITIVENESS

Meet one of the most competitive of the 60 pillars – the Xin Wei (辛未) or Metal Goat. You wouldn’t use a scalpel to chop down a tree, neither would you use an axe to perform surgery. The Xin Metal (辛) may be seen as small and delicate, but by no way is it non-lethal. A scalpel, used the right way and in the right hands, can cause massive impact.

XIN WEI (辛未)/METAL GOAT: OVERVIEW

On the surface, the Xin Wei (辛未) or Metal Goat is not a very ‘attractive’ pillar. It is described as newly unearthed metal or antiques. The surface has been dulled by time, perhaps even caked with the sands of time. It will take an unerring eye to discern the true value hidden deep within.

However, the nature of the Xin Metal is to shine! Being seen as faded and nondescript on the surface can be extremely frustrating for a Xin Metal Day Master. Nevertheless, this infuriating situation is exactly what gives the Xin Wei its biggest strength – the gift of competitiveness. If you are a Xin Wei Day Master, you would never shy away from competition. Instead, you thrive on it!

I like to think of the Xin Wei pillar as Aladdin’s Lamp. It looks dull, but when you rub it, a genie pops out! Let’s check out the genie in the bottle!

XIN WEI (辛未)/METAL GOAT: STRENGTHS

Just like all the other Xin (辛) Day Masters, the Xin Wei (辛未) or Metal Goat Day Master has got charm, wit and people skills in spades! This Day Master is further supported by its own Resource Star, giving you the strength to withstand pressure and competition.

  1. The Xin Wei (辛未) or Metal Goat also sits on a Wood Storage, which in this case is one of your Wealth stars. This star brings about a sharp shrewdness that helps you quickly and accurately gauge individuals and circumstances.
  2. Your Wealth star then produces your Ding Fire (丁) Influence star where lies the core of your action-taking abilities. In your case, this future-forward Ding Fire is extremely ambitious and it also represents your drive to attain wealth and fame.
  3. Finally, the Ding Fire (丁) Influence star produces your Ji Earth (己) Resource star that gives you an instinctive grasp of group dynamics. Given your innate people skills and analytical abilities, this is something that will give you the competitive edge.

XIN WEI (辛未)/METAL GOAT): HOW YOU PRESENT + VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

This segment, how the Xin Wei (辛未) or Metal Goat presents and its vulnerabilities, is best illustrated by using the example of a famous Xin Wei Day Master – Gordon Ramsay.

Gordon Ramsay, the Xin Wei or Metal Goat Day Master

Externally he is not classically good looking. Agree? Yet there is something captivating about the raw energy that he emits. Because all Xin Metal Day Masters inherently like attention, the exterior ‘unattractiveness’ of the Xin Wei pillar could cause problems with self-image issues.

Additionally, when the Yi Wood (乙) Wealth star and the Ding Fire (丁) Influence star is ticking overtime, the two elements working together can create a Xin Metal Day Master who is very forceful and domineering. Just like Gordon Ramsay. We’ve all seen him in the popular series Hell’s Kitchen. Given a position of power, this is pretty much how a Xin Wei behaves – zero tolerance for laziness and fools.

Gordon Ramsay has found a way to make this image, and these vulnerabilities, work for him. If, however, you find these traits to be the very characteristics that are holding you back, the solution is simple – you will need to learn to be more accommodating of other people’s foibles and shortcomings.

XIN WEI (辛未), BUT BETTER

Becoming Xin Wei (辛未) but better is easy. For this Metal Day Master to shine, we need to use the Water element, which represents your Output element. Try to find a career, business or a life that centres around travel. When you experience more of what the world has to offer, when you open yourself to other cultures and perceptions, that is when your Day Pillar will begin to shine bright.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#7 GENG WU (庚午)/METAL HORSE: THE GIFT OF AUTHORITY

What would you do if you held a legendary sword in your hands? How would you use it? How will you wield that gift of execution? Because with a Geng Wu (庚午) in your Bazi Chart, that is exactly the gift you have been born with.

I guess it would be normal to compare this pillar to the Excalibur. But for a self-professed fan of Arthurian legends, technically, that doesn’t sit well somehow. In legends, Excalibur was either yanked from a rock by Arthur, or given to him by the Lady of the Lake. So perhaps a better example would be Sting, the elven blade wielded by Frodo in the Lord of the Rings? At least it glows, right?

But I digress…

GENG WU (庚午)/METAL HORSE: OVERVIEW

Seen as metal forged by fire, the Geng Wu is often pictured as a sharp and shiny sword, gleaming with latent power and potency. With this image comes four key descriptions for the Geng Wu pillar – Authority, Execution, Loyalty and the gift of Foresight. No bones about it, this is one tough pillar!

What’s so special? Read on!

GENG WU (庚午): STRENGTHS

The Geng Metal itself is the toughest of all the Yang Stems. This stem is all about action. Being idle never sits well with the Geng Metal. When the Geng Day Master (yup, you!) is motivated, nothing can stand in its way. If we think of this Geng Metal as a sword, challenges (represented by Fire) will make you stronger, it can cleave mountains (Earth), magnetize opportunities (Water), and make short work of, well… work! (Wood).

The hidden elements that lie beneath this Day Master, adds even more strength to the pillar. Here’s how:

  1. This Geng Metal Day Master is constantly being produced and supported by its Ji Earth (己) Direct Resource star. The Ji Earth is absorbent by nature. Therefore, because of this star, the Geng Wu sometimes give off the impression of someone who just naturally masters new skills without requiring any form of formal training. There is an acute intelligence at play here, people! The Geng Wu has no need to slog with hours of study. Instead, they learn just by focusing on and exposing themselves to the skills that they want to pick up.
  2. This Geng Metal Day Master sits on a Ding Fire (丁) Direct Officer star that simultaneously controls the Geng Metal and produces its Direct Resource (Ji Earth (己), see point 1 above). This relationship represents the self-discipline inherent within the Geng Wu. This Ding Fire Direct Officer makes you, the Geng Wu Day Master, a deeply loyal and righteous person. There is a strong value system at play here. What’s more? The Geng Wu has the unique ability to keep your ego at bay. Decisions are always made based on what’s right instead of what’s expedient or appealing to your self-image. This trait is best appreciated by those who truly understand the altruistic nature of your decisions. When that happens, loyalty begets loyalty in return.

GENG WU (庚午): WEAKNESSES TO BE AWARE OF

As you can see from the strengths, the Geng Wu can be a rather intense pillar. But for all their gifts, every pillar will have its own weaknesses. In the case of the Geng Wu, perfectionism might be a problem.

Of course, perfectionism itself is a good trait to have. After all, better to strive towards perfectionism than to fall into a slip-shod way of doing things! Isn’t that right, Geng Wu? But not when this drive for perfection leads to procrastination. Some perfectionists have this tendency. If they can’t make it perfect, they will delay. So just watch out for that trait and if you catch yourself procrastinating, ask yourself why?

This perfectionist-streak can also cause you, the Geng Wu Day Mater, to become a hard task-master both to yourself and to others. It’s almost like there is this grand vision of the future that continually drives you on, to the point that you have forgotten the importance of celebrating the small victories and triumphs that come every day. Nothing is good enough because nothing can measure up to that grand vision in your head. Imagine working for a Geng Wu boss or working with a Geng Wu business partner! You bring in sales to the tune of a million, and he/she asks why isn’t it two million?

So, what to do? I’m not asking you to tone down that perfectionist streak. Simply, make an effort to celebrate the small gains. You will find that sincere praise from a hard-to-please boss does wonders for team morale. It’s not that hard to do. Try it! You’d be surprised.

GENG WU (庚午): HOW YOU PRESENT

Intelligent, disciplined and a perfectionist. If I were to use one word to describe how you, the Geng Wu Day Master presents externally, it would be this: Intimidating!

But stop right there if you are thinking that you need to dumb yourself down to be more likable. Instead, turn intimidation into admiration by consciously showcasing the altruistic side of your actions, that bright loyalty that inspires and motivates others, and the generosity of your knowledge.

GENG WU (庚午), BUT BETTER

For this final segment, let’s have another look at this sharp and newly-forged sword that is the Geng Wu. Produced by its Direct Resource and tempered by its Direct Officer, this sword needs something to do! It needs something to chop. From a Bazi point of view, the Geng Metal’s wealth element is represented by Wood.

Regardless if Wood is present or not in your Bazi Chart, you can consciously ‘activate’ wood by learning to plan, strategize, create a road-map and timelines to achieve your goals. That grand vision of what-can-be is already in your head. You just need a plan to get there.

This plan will help you overcome the inclination towards procrastination. And oh! Don’t forget to communicate that plan to your team!

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#5 WU CHEN (戊辰): THE GIFT OF NOBILITY

Among the Wu Day Masters, the Wu Chen (戊辰)  is the true all-rounder! This pillar carries a natural aura of nobility and aristocracy.

The picture that the Wu Chen evokes is that of a gentle pastoral scene. Think lush emerald green hills below a bright blue sky decorated with wisps of white cloud. Think of a mountain that clothes itself in a green cloak, hiding behind the mist. It is peaceful; it is resourceful; and yes, NICE!

You got it, the best way to describe a Wu Chen Day Master is ‘nice’! This pillar reflects an individual who is intelligent, well-educated, gentle and generally, amicable.

But be warned! This mountain is no pushover! Beneath that niceness lies real strength. Let’s dive straight into that.

WU CHEN (戊辰)/EARTH DRAGON: OVERVIEW

So what’s special about this Day Master? While not a true Fui Gong or Bright Star pillar, the nobility of the Wu Chen puts it right up there with the special four. Basically, these pillars represent hardy, multi-talented and very capable individuals. The Wu Chen is nicer, though. Benign but tough!

In the case of the Wu Chen, what does that hardiness mean? It means that, in spite of all its niceness, this pillar, which is rooted in the Branch possesses extraordinary determination and is able to withstand a lot of pain in order to triumph against adversities.

WU CHEN (戊辰)/EARTH DRAGON: STRENGTH

In the Wu Chen, we find a multi-talented pillar that is rooted and sits on its own Wealth, Officer and Companion.

The Wu Earth Companion Star brings self-assurance to the table. The Yi Wood Officer Star brings a gift of diplomacy while the Gui Water Direct Wealth is perceptive, quick, curious and hard-working. Put them together and we have a Day Master who is capable of not just careful planning but also massive action.

At the same time, although you retain much of the Wu Earth’s attributes for calmness and stability, the Wu Chen is the most flexible among the Wu Earth Day Masters. Like the rolling hills you represent, you have a gentle and persuasive manner that will be a boon when it comes to dealing with different types of people.

Additionally, what we have here is a controlling cycle where the Yi Wood Officer Star controls the Wu Earth Companion Star which in turn controls the Gui Water Direct Wealth. Translated to plain English? It represents the self-restraint and self-possession that is a natural part of the Wu Chen Day Master.

What’s missing in this pillar is the element of Fire to support the Wu Earth. Luckily, there is a hidden combination within the pillar itself. The Gui and Wu combines to create Fire. When the Officer Star and the Resource Star co-produce each other, this is where that aura of Nobility comes from. This Fire is very important for the Wu Chen. We’ll talk about that a little later. But first, let’s cover some of this pillar’s vulnerabilities.

WU CHEN (戊辰)/EARTH DRAGON: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

There is a certain dichotomy to your nature, especially where your friends are concerned. While sociable, you will find there are times when you just want to be left alone. Extremely independent by nature, you are driven by a compulsion for constant evolution. The Wu Chen pillar carries tremendous potential, though sometimes you may not be able to recognize your own capacity. People who know you well could often be puzzled by your deep-seated insecurities, your sensitivity to critique, especially given the many talents that you have.

But in all honesty, this is a ‘weakness’ in name only. It can be easily fixed. Which leads us to…

WU CHEN (戊辰), BUT BETTER

Equip Yourself With Quality Education

The Wu Chen Day Master is a visionary who is extremely sensitive, intuitive and creative. Gifted with strong communication skills, the most important thing for a Wu Chen Day Master is to ensure that you are equipped with quality education. This will result in an individual who is both idealistic and observant, articulate and methodical.

Keep Evolving, Learning And Improving

If you know that insecurity can become a potential stumbling block for you, then make a conscious effort to keep evolving, learning and improving. The Wu Chen loves academia, anyway. So let’s use that trait to turn a weakness into a strength.

Fire! See The Funny Side Of Life

Remember how I said earlier that Fire is an important element to this pillar? Basically, we need to allow the Wu Earth-Gui Water combination to happen. How to do that? Easy! All you need to do is to develop the ability to see the funny side of life, to laugh gently at your own foibles and those of others.

Remember, The Wu Chen likes to control its environment. That’s a pretty stressful ‘want’. Sometimes, things happen that are really out of our control. This is where a finely-honed sense of humour can help you keep your perspective.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#1 JIA ZI (甲子)/WOOD RAT: THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE

Every time I see the 甲子 (Jia Zi) or Wood Rat pillar, I think of a pine tree in winter. Seriously! A tall and lush evergreen standing on pristine white snow. As pretty as the picture may be, this is a pretty harsh environment for a tree to grow, let alone thrive!

This calls to mind an individual who stands tall in defiance of their challenging surroundings. They hold their ground, they never back down. This is a pretty formidable pillar. Really! Albeit, those born in the Summer months will tend to be a little ‘sunnier’ than their Winter counterparts. But formidable is as formidable does.

Regardless of the season of birth, this is undoubted a sturdy, stable and grounded individual. You are never frivolous and the Jia Zi Day masters are usually straight talkers. You say what you mean, and mean what you say. While you risk coming across as blunt, you also gain trust! Because people know that you will always deliver on a promise.

What the Jia Zi does not like, are big sudden changes or upheavals. From the perspective of the Jia Zi, growth should be slow but inevitable. Surprises and setbacks can be distressing for you. Too many surprises and setbacks in a row can even lead to a loss of self-confidence.

But just because you don’t like sudden change doesn’t mean that you can’t handle it. For the Jia Zi, no challenge is too big. Why? Because you are rooted in your own resource. Let’s talk about that…

JIA ZI (甲子)/WOOD RAT STRENGTHS: KNOWLEDGE

When we look at the technical aspect of the Jia Zi, this Jia Wood Day Master is seated solely on its Resource star. This is what we mean by the term ‘rooted in your own resource’. Translated into non-technical language, this simply means a very resourceful person who is strong-willed and independent.

Rooted in your own resource also reflects a progressive individual who is constantly learning and growing. If you look at the pillar, this Jia Wood is constantly being produced by its Gui Water resource. As long as the learning never stops, a Jia Zi Day Master will always be at his or her best. An intellectual giant! A thought leader who is very steady and down-to-earth.

This resource star is also what brings you your meticulous, hard-working, perseverant and disciplined nature.

Additionally, this Jia Wood Day Master is also seated on the Bath position in the 12 Growth Phases. This position gives you plenty of drive and forward vision. Like a tree turning a single drop of water into branches, leaves, flowers and fruits, the Jia Zi Day Master is one who can multi-task effortlessly.

JIA ZI (甲子)/WOOD RAT WEAKNESS: THE CURSE OF KNOWLEDGE

However, this superior intellect can sometimes come with its own set of problems. Having grown to such lofty heights, not many people can be your intellectual equal. Learning a little flexibility, consciously cultivating the ability to sway with the wind, will help smoothen your journey in life. After all, why make things unnecessarily difficult for yourself?

The next thing I want you to know is that while the Rat has brought you plenty of blessings, the branch’s restless energy can become a weakness. This restlessness of the Rat may cause perpetual discontent or a tendency to leave things half-done when you are bored. There is no ‘fix’ to this, just an awareness of this trait will help you to dig deep and call upon the more disciplined side of your nature.

Most of all, beware the curse of knowledge. In Bazi, Water represents thoughts and emotions. When there is too much Water, this Jia Zi pillar has a tendency to over-think. You may find yourself overwhelmed by thougths and emotions.

But is there a solution? Of course!

JIA ZI, BUT BETTER: SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE

Becoming a better Jia Zi is super-easy.  You have all this knowledge producing you. Share the knowledge! That’s how we ‘disperse’ the water. Become the new buzzword of the present era, an Infopreneur.

Here’s the great thing about teaching or sharing information. It helps you filter the stuff in your head. Like what I’m doing now, I had to distill all that I know about this Jia Zi, and figure out a way to present it to you in a way that makes sense. In that journey, I too become better.

So if you are a Jia Zi Day Master, it’s time to start that blog, create your YouTube videos, organize your Facebook live sharing, share that lifetime of learning so that others may benefit.

A PICTURE OF YOU

I’ve… got a picture of you in my mind!

90s boybands aside, this is actually how a Bazi Consultant decodes your Destiny Chart. Here’s a sample of a Bazi Chart:

Looks intimidating, doesn’t it? That’s what we, your Bazi Consultants, are here for!

Here’s what we see:

So apart from having a lovely picture to hang on your wall, what goes does it do? Let me answer that in one word: Clarity!

Before I go any further, let me debunk some popular myths here – your Bazi Consultants are not fortune tellers. What we look for is the true capacity or potential of the Chart, and correspondingly, the owner of the Chart. We look into the character of the person and how this drives his or her emotions, decisions and actions, which further affects the outcomes in his or her life.

Decoding the chart provides personal clarity.

Armed with that information, the person, if he or she so chooses, can dictate the outcome by changing any one of the three. Will it be easy? That depends. Problems and opportunities are two sides of the same coin.
