Whether you run a small solo-proprietor business, or a billion-dollar conglomerate, your marketing is an external manifestation of your identity. Frequently, guided by externally driven marketing ideas, we tailor our marketing efforts to what we think people want to see. But what people want to see, may not be who we really are and the type of value we really want to bring to the market. While not so much of a problem where actual physical products are concerned, this ‘gap’ between how you market and who you really are can be glaring if you are providing a service.
Which leads us to the Period 9 buzzword: Authenticity. Even more important now in the age of ChatGPT. Don’t get me wrong. The generative rise of AI is heaven-sent for the busy business owner. It saves so much time. But over-reliance on AI copywriting robs you of your voice. Ever noticed how almost everyone’s social media posts these days sound exactly the same these days?
July’s Xin Wei month is encouraging you to take a moment to reflect on the authenticity of your business practices. What are your values? What type of consumers or customers would share that value? How can you best communicate those values, in as authentic a way as possible. How consistent are you with that messaging? What stories are you telling?
