The Returning Hexagram is derived of Earth at the top, and Wood at the bottom. Earth represents stillness, patience, smoothness and a conservative attitude. Meanwhile, the Zhen trigram at the bottom is literally Thunder! The Zhen trigram represents movement, motion, and execution.
The explosive power of Thunder hidden underneath submissive Earth creates an interesting play of energies.
To better visualize, think of the growth of a bamboo shoot. It stays dormant underground for years, accumulating resources until the time is ripe, and then boom! Suddenly, overnight, we have a bamboo tree many feet tall!

Referring to our analogy of a bamboo, this vulnerable seed is being protected by the earth while it germinates. In human terms, this could be interpreted as a return to our core skills or talents. Where career development is concerned, expanding from our core is always easier than a way-out plan to switch 180 degrees. It is less stressful and infinitely more manageable.
From the lens of career opportunities, this can represent a time where you return to the familiar, strengthen your core skill and improve on your competitive edge. Making it harder for others to overtake you. The interpretation of the word ‘core’ can mean many different things – can be core skill, core customers, core industry, core business, and many more. This level of preparation makes you a formidable competitor.
In that sense, the Returning hexagram can literally represent hiding one’s true intentions under stillness. It’s about doing something behind the scenes without broadcasting your intentions, waiting for the right time to launch.
RETURNING HEXAGRAM FOR BUSINESS
For the business interpretation, I’d like to use some war-like analogy. The Returning hexagram represents an army that has dug in to rest through the winter. They deepen the moat, pull up the drawbridge, shore up their defences, rest their troops, in preparation for when the time is ripe to attack again. Outwardly, they don’t seem to be doing much. But inwardly, there are a lot of training going on behind the fortified walls.
In business terms, this basically talks about deepening your moat. While it’s business as usual on the surface, you are making a strategic effort to strengthen your company’s competitive advantages and barriers to entry. This could happen either through innovation, brand building, improving economies of scale, navigating regulatory barriers, securing patents and intellectual property, training talent and expertise, and maybe even improving customer relationships.
RETURNING HEXAGRAM FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
In terms of personal development, the Returning hexagram signifies a time of returning to familiar and stable surroundings where you feel safe and protected while you gather your strength through self-improvement.
The Zhen trigram underneath the Kun trigram is likened to a son returning to a mother’s embrace. It signifies a time to re-connecting with your core and returning to your home base.
It’s an act of self-mastery. This can also mean taking the time to cultivate a strong inner core while dealing with the external world.
THE PROCESS MAY BE FRUSTRATING
For the less patient among us, this process may be a little frustrating. After all, the 2-3 combo is still the Bullfight Sha. In this case, tempers may fray because of a sense of wanting to do more and be more. You see others seemingly progressing, but you are still at a resource accumulation stage.

To speed up the process of the turnaround, there is a need to fix the core issues that may be standing in your way. It is time to ask the hard questions. If there is a lack of viable opportunities, why is that so? Could it be a lack of knowledge? Or a lack of contacts? Lack of exposure? Lack of experience, maybe? The Returning hexagram is great at creating a protective space while you address that ‘lack’.
BUT WHATEVER YOU DO…
… don’t do nothing! With the Returning hexagram, if you hibernate, it will be so hard to get back into momentum. Outwardly you can be still. But inwardly, there must be a lot of preparation underway.
