Are you up for an adventure? If you are a Wu Shen (戊申) or Earth Monkey Day Master, chances are, you would be! Imagined as a rugged mountain with a core of minerals, the Wu Shen (戊申) is yet another pillar that signifies a person with a load of hidden talents.
WU SHEN (戊申) / EARTH MONKEY: OVERVIEW
The most agile among the six Wu Earth Day Masters, the Wu Shen (戊申) is also considered to be the most talented.
To be honest, every time I see the Wu Shen pillar, I think of this guy…

Maybe it’s because he ‘broke out’ or came into being from a rocky mineral mountain. No denying, he has plenty of tricks up his sleeves. In case I’ve lost you somewhere – this is the mythical god, Sun WuKong, the Monkey God. In the Hindu culture, this figure is also known as Hanuman.
But I’m being irreverent. The pitfalls of an over-active imagination! So I apologize.
Onwards and upwards, people! Let’s dig into this mineral mountain. Get excited coz we’re about to hit gold!
WU SHEN (戊申): STRENGTHS
The first thing to note is that the Shen (申) branch itself is both an Intelligence Star as well as a Travelling Star. When a Day Master sits on an Intelligence Star, this is always an indication of a superior intellect. Additionally, because the Shen is also a Travelling Star, it allows you, the Wu Earth (戊) Day Master, to be more pro-active, more action-oriented and indeed more adventurous as compared to your other Wu Earth peers who usually tend to display a marked inclination towards achieving stability.
There’s nothing wrong with being adventurous. Similarly, working towards achieving stability is also fine. It’s just different strokes for different folks. All I’m saying is that in this sense, the Wu Shen behaves rather differently from the other Wu Earth Day Masters.
There is a high degree of intellectual curiosity in the Wu Shen. You enjoy picking up new knowledge. Analyzing new data is literally child’s play for you. Best of all, not only are you able to internalize but you can also simplify complex issues. This single trait alone is a big strength for the Wu Shen. When you embrace and activate this ability, new adventures will always be beckoning on the horizon.
I’ve written three paragraphs and I’m still describing the Elegant Mountain! So let’s dig in for real now.

- What we see here is a rooted Day Master. This Wu Earth (戊) Friend Star brings stability and self-sufficiency to this pillar. At the same time, this is where your deep sense of loyalty and honour comes from.
- The Wu Earth (戊) Friend Star produces a thriving Geng Metal (庚) Eating God Star. This is a rather interesting Eating God star. Because the Geng Metal is such a tough energy, in the case of the Wu Shen, it literally brings you talents in both physical activities as well as artistic abilities. With this single star, you are able to innovate and execute at the same time.
- The Geng Metal (庚) Eating God Star then produces the Ren Water (壬) Indirect Wealth. The number one strength of the Ren Water is its interpersonal skills, that singular ability to connect with just about anyone. Because this Ren Water is your Indirect Wealth, what this means is that you will be able to create new opportunities when you use your innate ability to work collaboratively with others.
Individually these elements bring a lot to the table. But let’s take this one step further by putting the Geng Metal Eating God (庚) and Ren Water Indirect Wealth (壬) together. The presence of these two stars in a single pillar gives you the courage to dream big, the audacity to innovate and the soft skills to navigate past any obstacles.
Are you feeling just a little bit like Sun WuKong yet? Before you pick up that broom pretending it is a staff, let’s have a conversation about weaknesses that you need to be aware of.
WU SHEN (戊申): WEAKNESSES TO BE AWARE OF
The presence of the Geng Metal Eating God (庚) and the Ren Water Indirect Wealth (壬) can be both a boon as well as a bane. The presence of uncontrolled Metal and Water very often leads to a high level of stress and anxiety. In extreme cases, when the Water element gets too strong, there is a risk of depression. Similarly, when the Metal element becomes overwhelming, you may experience a lack of clarity.
Wu Shen Day Masters tend to suffer from regular health issues, usually related to stress and anxiety.
WU SHEN (戊申): HOW YOU PRESENT
The Wu Shen Day Master often presents as someone who is unconventional and impatient. But given your unique individualism, are you even surprised? Does it even bother you?
WU SHEN (戊申), BUT BETTER
The biggest weakness of the Wu Shen pillar is the possible anxiety and lack of clarity caused by the presence of the Geng Metal Eating God (庚) and the Ren Water Indirect Wealth (壬). Awareness is the first step. If you feel that these two elements are running amok and causing you problems, the solution to this weakness is simply to activate the Fire Element, which represents Resource to you.
Using or activating Resource can be as simple as creating more time for rest. Alternatively, you can activate your Resource by indulging in your love for learning. When things look dark or murky, it is time to bring your knowledge and experience to bear.
When your brain is engaged in the act of learning something new, you are forcing your attention away from the problems that are bothering you at the moment. This is not about sweeping your troubles under the carpet and forgetting about them. Instead, this gives you a breather to stop twisting around the same issue, and the opportunity to revisit them from a fresh perspective.
As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.
