#38 XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: THE GIFT OF UNIQUENESS

Observant, intuitive and possessing of a strong streak for self-reliance, the Xin Chou (辛丑) Day Master also comes blessed with a charming personality that gives you the competitive edge. And more, the Xin Chou Day Master has the potential to be unique, one-of-a-kind, stand out in a crowd. In other words, you dare to be different.

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: OVERVIEW

We all know what gold looks like. But how many of us have seen gold in its raw form? This unpolished raw metal in its original form, newly excavated from the ground, unpolished, solid and pure represents your personality. A diamond in the rough.

This is the Xin Chou (辛丑), which brings the gift of uniqueness.

But, wouldn’t you agree that, to the untrained eye, gold in its original form will seem no different from any other piece of rock? So, grab a loupe! Let’s take a closer look.

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: STRENGTHS

Xin Chou Bazi
  1. Parked under your Xin Metal Day Master is a resourceful Ji Earth (己) Resource star. This star brings the gift of astute perception, sharp observation, swift thinking, and the ability to be a great ‘life learner’.  Seated on your resource star also signifies that resource is abundant in your life. This is where the Xin Chou can be very self-reliant. However, please understand that self-reliance is not about shouldering every hardship that comes your way.
  2. Instead, when your Ji Earth (己) Resource Star produces your Xin Metal (辛) Companion star, this brings about an inherent appreciation for your own self-worth, self-expression and self-acceptance. In other words, this represents your high level of self-confidence. You dare to be different! Raw gold knows its own worth. It doesn’t care if the untrained eye recognizes it or not. This sense of self-acceptance is the one thing that differentiates the Xin Chou from all the other Xin variants. With your self-confidence bolstered by this rooted Friend star, the Xin Chou has the potential or the ability, to create a unique identity for yourself which helps you stand out of the crowd.
  3. Your Gui Water (癸) Output star gives you the capacity for fluid imagination, creativity, innovation, and inventiveness.

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: HOW YOU PRESENT

Given this level of self-confidence, the Xin Chou (辛丑) Day Master will typically present with a friendly and magnetic personality. You love meeting new people, and you enjoy magnetizing new friends into your life. After all, the Xin Metal is the star of networking!

All your relationships are meaningful to you. But for those lucky enough to get into your inner circle, they will find in you, a true and loyal friend who is genuinely protective and supportive.

(Side note: From a physical point of view, Xin Chou ladies are usually graceful, slender, and drop dead gorgeous.)

XIN CHOU (辛丑)/METAL OX: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Be careful that strong sense of loyalty. It can be both an asset and a liability. Be careful to what or to whom you gift this loyalty to.

Staying loyal in a situation that is emotionally or mentally damaging will erode anyone’s self-confidence, but the Xin Chou is particularly vulnerable to this. Because when the negative thinking turns inwards, you literally end up attacking yourself.

And where would all that self-criticism get you? Absolutely nowhere.

XIN CHOU, BUT BETTER

So how can we maximize the uniqueness of the Xin Chou? I have a few of suggestions.

Learn To Be Observant

Crafting and carving raw gold into a thing of beauty that is universally admired requires time, effort, precision, and yes, discipline. One wrong move could shatter the ore and ruin the value of the precious metal. But in the hands of an expert craftsman, the Xin Metal’s inner glow becomes apparent for all to see. But before the craftsman begins to wield his tools, the first thing he does… is observe. He looks at the natural contours of the metal, its inherent shape and feels its potential.

This level of observation can be learnt, especially if you are a Xin Chou Day Master. It’s about learning to trust your intuition with regards to the people that come your way, learning to pick up non-verbal cues to discern who will have a positive impact in your life and vice versa.

This skill is particularly important for the Xin Chou, which leads us to the second suggestion…

Surround Yourself with The Right Friends

Surround yourself with the friends who contribute positively to your self-esteem will greatly enhance your ability to be self-reliant.

And Finally, Learn the Rewards Of Mental Discipline

Into each life, a little rain must fall. For each Metal Day Master, a little Fire is needed to mould and shape. With resource so easily available to the Xin Chou Day Master, learning the rewards of mental discipline will help maximize the use of the resources at hand.

Discipline is like a muscle. It can be trained. But again, don’t get me wrong. This is not about being hard on yourself. It’s not about forcing yourself to work crazy hours. In this case, it is about learning to see the big picture and exercise restraint in adversity. In other words, it’s about tampering the overcritical and impatient side of the Xin Metal.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#36 JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: THE GIFT OF YOUR VOICE

Witty, resourceful, bursting with energy, the Ji Hai (己亥) Day Master has one physical attribute that wins against everyone else. Consider it your superpower. It’s your voice! Ji Hai Day Masters are usually blessed with an enthralling and mesmerizing voice. But of course, you are more than just your voice.

Care to know more? Read on…

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: OVERVIEW

Externally, the Ji Hai (己亥) presents as a very idyllic picture – endless waves, lapping gently against the golden sands; coconut trees swaying elegantly in the breeze. Picturesque, isn’t it?

The Ji Hai Day Master is certainly blessed with a potent combination of both beauty and brains. Like the beautiful picture that the pillar presents, you, the Ji Hai Day Master, possess mesmerizing beauty along with a warm and exuberant personality. Looking at the picture alone, you would most likely think that the Ji Hai Day Master is one who is good-natured, easy-going, someone who goes with the flow, maybe even a little lackadaisical.

To a point, you would be right. But did you know, that beneath that romantic exterior lies a very capable Day Master with the gift for planning and hard work?

Let’s talk about your strengths…

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: STRENGTHS

Ji Hai Bazi
  1. Let’s start with your Ji Earth (己) Day Master. Like all Ji Earth, you are resourceful and productive. If I were a hiring manager, I would be delighted to have a Ji Hai working for me, especially a young Ji Hai Day Master who is just starting out in his or her career. Why? Because the Ji Hai is malleable and teachable. In other words, unlike the more stubborn Day Masters, the Ji Hai Day Master is open to external suggestions and therefore, will continue to expand and grow his or her potential exponentially.
  2. This trait of being teachable is amplified by the presence of your Jia Wood (甲) Officer star which at once ‘controls’ and ‘combines’ with your Ji Earth Day Master. This star is particularly important in the Ji Hai pillar. It creates the stability you need to become more self-confident. At the same time, it represents the opportunity for your hard work to help you gain authority, status, and recognition.
  3. If the Ji Hai sounds very pleasant so far, hang on a second. Never discount the fact that this nurturing and compassionate Ji Earth sits on an innovative and forceful Ren Water (壬) Wealth star. This star holds the most influence when it comes to the planning skills of the Ji Hai. After all, the Direct Wealth literally governs planning and execution!

Planning skills is one of the cornerstones for success. And here’s the rub. Not everyone does it naturally like the Ji Hai. Many of us are visionary big thinkers. The Ji Hai, on the other hand, makes big plans and turns those grand schemes into smaller rational and realistic steps – all thanks to the Ren Water Direct Wealth that you sit on.

4. Despite the absence of any of your output stars, the Ji Hai Day Master can also be very creative. This comes from the smooth interactions within the Hai/Pig branch itself where the Water produces the Wood. In your case, this represents your Direct Wealth producing your Direct Officer, which translates into a powerful imagination, and the energy to go after your creative goals.

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

But what about your vulnerabilities? Each of your strengths mentioned so far, will have a darker side. After all, that’s the concept of Yin and Yang.

Firstly, your vaunted malleability. Along with that easy-going attitude comes the tendency to be a people-pleasure.

Next, the presence of your Jia Wood (甲) Officer star may be important to create stability in your pillar, but at the same time, it could cause you to create too many rules for yourself, and ultimately, impending your own growth.

Finally, while the Ji Hai is usually even-tempered, you do have some trigger points – particularly when things don’t go to plan. This is especially true at a time when your Ren Water (壬) Wealth star gets out of control.

JI HAI (己亥)/EARTH PIG: HOW YOU PRESENT

Generous, confident, and honourable, your personal brand is that of someone who is steady and even-tempered. Aside from resourcefulness, the Ji Hai pillar holds a great deal of integrity. So you start off on the right footing as the first impression you give is of someone who is trustworthy.

On the flip side, the Ji Hai pillar tends to try to be everything for everyone. If you are aware of this trait, it can be kept under control.

JI HAI, BUT BETTER

Being Ji Hai, But Better is almost a no-brainer. Since you have been given an outstanding gift in your vocal cords, doesn’t it make sense to get some vocal training and build up your vocal image? Our voices and how we speak literally carry an image of us. You have been given a natural advantage in this area, so I’d use it to the max.

Lastly, strive to use your planning abilities to create work-life balance. This is something that is particularly important for the Ji Hai. Why? Because the golden sand of this beach is constantly in danger of being eroded by the sea. Therefore, this Day Master needs time for self-care. Otherwise, you end up over-exerting yourself.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#35 WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: THE GIFT OF STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS

As one of the four Fui Gong pillars, the Wu Xu is just as tough and hardy as any one of the other three. It’s one stand-out characteristic? Straightforwardness.

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: OVERVIEW

What happens when you stack two mountains on top of each other? It calls to mind someone well-grounded, stable, and determined. That’s exactly the image that the Wu Xu (戊戌) pillar creates. The classical texts describe the Wu Xu as an edgy and rocky mineral mountain, tough on the outside, passionate on the inside.

It sounds unattractive, I know. But there is a stark beauty in the Wu Xu.

Let’s think about this for a second. If we were to describe the Wu Xu as a dormant volcano, what comes to mind is a hard-surfaced mineral mountain dotted with craters. This same edgy look creates a Day Master who is just as edgy and straightforward.

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: STRENGTHS

There are abilities aplenty in the Wu Xu. Seated on your own Direct Resource, Friend and Hurting Officer stars, this Day Master is ably supported by the drive of your Ding Fire Direct Resource Star, the practical determination of its Wu Earth Friend Star, and the subtle magnetism conveyed by your Xin Metal Hurting Officer star.

  1. Your Ding Fire (丁) Resource Star brings the gift of ambition, rationality and objectivity. Bolstered by your Ding Fire Resource star, the Wu Xu naturally wants to achieve something substantial. You have a fine grasp of details and you are a firm believer of learning by experience. In fact, the Wu Xu naturally likes knowledge. To be more specific, the Wu Xu likes to hoard knowledge.
  2. The more knowledgeable you are, the more self-confident you become – as seen by how your Ding Fire Resource Star produces your Wu Earth (戊) Day Master and Companion star. Proud and alert, this Companion star brings a natural flair for leadership, aided by your willingness to listen to opposing points of view. For all your toughness and straight talking, you enjoy working in a congenial atmosphere and will have little patience with pettiness and power plays.
  3. Finally, your Xin Metal (辛) Output star brings a desire for recognition. The gift of straightforwardness? It lies here. In the eyes of the Wu Xu, telling truth to power is the best way to deal with any situation. Beating around the bush is merely a waste of precious time and resources. Being the hardy person you are, you honestly believe that coddling is bad for your health and tough love is the only love that matters. The Wu Xu will never be the person who lives in denial.

But remember, the truth may be powerful, it can also be painful…

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

For the Wu Xu Day Master, your biggest challenge is learning to tell the truth in a way that is more acceptable to your audience.

Additionally, when you put two mountains together into a single pillar, your first instinct will be to hoard information. The Wu Xu will have the tendency to dole out information piece by piece on a need-to-know basis. The problem here, though, is that it often creates an aloof exterior where trust is hard to come by. Because people sense that you are holding back! That you are being reticent on purpose.

Which leads us to…

WU XU (戊戌)/EARTH DOG: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Wu Xu typically presents with a steely, stoic, almost aloof persona. This is something that the Wu Xu Day Master must always be aware of. Whether or not you intend to ‘fix’ this aloof persona, is up to you. By now, surely you would have figured out a way to make the aloofness work for you.

But beneath that steely exterior…

… lies a soft inner core that the Wu Xu would protect at all costs. The Wu Xu is intuitive by nature and as a result, can be rather sensitive to criticism. The best way around this is for the Wu Xu Day Master to develop a more rational perspective and cultivate a deep inner faith in your abilities.

WU XU, BUT BETTER

With great power comes great responsibilities. Life is frequently less easy or smooth sailing for someone with so many abilities. Such is the journey for the Wu Xu. A life full of challenges that only you can tame. In Bazi consults, when we see a Fui Gong pillar like the Wu Xu, we know that this person is destined for great achievements. All you need to do, is cast away those self-doubts and learn to reframe (not silence) your own internal critic.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#34 DING YOU (丁酉)/FIRE ROOSTER: THE GIFT OF PERSPECTIVE

The Ding You (丁酉) calls up images of the glow of candlelight reflected off the smooth surface of the mirror. A little like the Bing Shen in the previous post, but this light is gentler and more calming. A fierce ray of sunshine may cause you to flinch and shade your eyes. But the reflected light of the candle is mesmerizing and captivating – a tell tale sign for a positive, attractive and exuberant personality.

DING YOU (丁酉)/FIRE ROOSTER: OVERVIEW

While the reflected sunlight of the Bing Shen represents a powerful sense of purpose, when translated to its Yin counterpart, this image of the reflected candlelight signifies the Ding You Day Master’s ability to view things from new perspectives.

This is a rare and valuable gift that magnifies the Ding Fire’s natural ability to inspire, influence, motivate and enlighten. Because true inspiration and motivation can only happen when you are able to walk a mile in the other person’s shoes, when they are convinced that you speak their language and truly appreciate the situation they are in.

But make no mistake, there is nothing reticent about the Ding You. Bright Ding Fire sitting on the shiny Xin Metal results in a Day Master that loves the limelight and revels in being centre stage. This is an incredibly charismatic Day Master who exudes irresistible charm and enthusiastic confidence.

DING YOU (丁酉)/FIRE ROOSTER: STRENGTHS

  1. The Ding You pillar sits on the Rooster which is both your Night Noble as well as your Intelligence Star. This gives you a strong sense of nobility. In Chinese Metaphysics, the concept of nobility comes from a person who has the resources to be of help to others. And of course, seated on your own Intelligence star means that intelligence, knowledge and respect are par for the course.
  2. Persuasive and passionate, the Ding Fire is the only element that can truly transform all the others. Because of this, Ding Fire Day Masters tend to be typically open-minded. But more than that, the Ding You (thanks to the Intelligence star), has the inborn ability to link different concepts and ideas together to create new insights or breakthroughs. Now if that isn’t genius, I don’t what is.
  3. Your Xin Metal (辛) Wealth Star is the foundation of your innovative can-do attitude. This, coupled with your gift of perspectives, gives you the ability to look at obstacles and setbacks from different angles. Additionally, you thrive on challenges, viewing them as opportunities to learn, improve and demonstrate your abilities. Finally, because of your Xin Metal Wealth Star, you are never one to fall for the sunk-cost fallacy.  Instead, the Ding You is far-sighted enough to abandon a struggling strategy in favour of developing new tactics to attack the problem from a brand new angle. What was that famous line? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

DING YOU (丁酉)/FIRE ROOSTER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

But here comes the irony. The opposing forces represented by the Ding Fire and Xin Metal gives rise to a rather prominent streak of rebelliousness and fierce independence in the Ding You pillar. On the plus column, this means that the Ding You Day Master is one who prefers to always be in control and will accept responsibility for their own action. But on the negative column, you find it really hard to accept advice.

So here’s the most important message to the Ding You Day Master. When you learn to recognize (and accept) genuine support when it comes your way, that is when the Day Master will truly shine.

DING YOU (丁酉)/FIRE ROOSTER: HOW YOU PRESENT

For all your sociable traits, the Ding You can be a rather difficult pillar to analyze. Like the candle reflected in a mirror, what you project on the surface may not be what you truly are.

No doubt, the Ding You is infinitely attractive. But there is a fickle and restless quality that represents an idealist who is constantly chasing after new experiences.

Instead of viewing this as a disadvantage, use the natural inclination of the Ding You to learn new perspectives and open new doors by expanding your circle. After all, they’re already flocking to you like moths to a candle.

DING YOU, BUT BETTER

For the Ding You to truly shine, you need the freedom to pursue your intellectual curiosities without external interferences. In other words, the Ding You loathes being constrained. After all, this is an independent pillar that balks at restrictions and will rebel from too much authority.

Once given the room you needs to flex your creative muscle, you would be surprised to find that the Ding You can achieve tremendous feats of laser-like concentration and endurance. Therefore, to be Ding You, But Better requires you to make conscious choices in life that will give you the right environment or conditions.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#33 BING SHEN (丙申)/FIRE MONKEY: THE GIFT OF PURPOSE

The Bing Shen (丙申) pillar is literally seen as sunlight reflected. Extraordinarily ambitious, creative, visionary and witty, this pillar is a force to be reckoned with.

BING SHEN (丙申)/FIRE MONKEY: OVERVIEW

In the old texts, the Bing Shen pillar is likened to the sun reflecting off the Kun Lun mountain where its light is reflected off the lake at the base of the mountain. In today’s context, we could see this pillar as the sun shining off the smooth glassy surface of a skyscraper. Double the sun, double the brilliance, double the enthusiasm, double the purpose!

And side note, Albert Einstein was a Bing Shen (丙申). Did you know that?

BING SHEN (丙申)/FIRE MONKEY: STRENGTHS

Bing Shen Bazi
  1. The first thing I want you to know is, this is a Day Master that sits on its own Intelligence Star. Of course, this is not exactly unique. There are other day masters that also sit on their own intelligence star – the Ding You 丁酉, Wu Shen 戊申, Ji You 己酉, Ren Yin 壬寅, and Gui Mao 癸卯. However, in the Bing Shen, this intelligence is more pronounced, completely due to the fact that the sunlight is being reflected. So it’s almost akin to having two suns shining in unison, so bright you need to wear shades. In other words, you can’t help but notice the sheer brilliance of this pillar.

When we have our own Intelligence Stars in our natal charts, what it basically means is that the Day Master is able to quickly grasp concepts and turn them into workable solutions. When a Day Master sits on its own Intelligence Star, this results in a highly intelligent, creative, visionary and witty individual.

2. The Bing Shen pillar is one that is infused with purpose. From their perspective, time must not be squandered and a life lived without intent and purpose is a life wasted. This self-sustaining and far-sighted Bing Fire literally burns with an inner vitality that brings out its inner creativity.

3. Idealistic as this creativity may be, the Bing Shen sits on its Geng Metal Indirect Wealth, which brings a strong degree of control and practicality into the picture. This Day Master is literally sitting or controlling its wealth.

4. Combined, this towering creativity and tough practicality ends with an action-taker who is able to overcome all odds. Yes, you’ve got it right. The Bing Shen is literally, a force to be reckoned with. With all these tools at your disposal, you already know that you are extraordinarily ambitious, multi-talented and determined.

BING SHEN (丙申)/FIRE MONKEY: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

While every pillar comes with a gift, so does it come with a weakness. In the case of the Bing Shen, so overwhelming is the fear of failure that sometimes, it can result in a Day Master who fears taking chances. This fear of failure stems from taking themselves and the world too seriously. Remember? For the Bing Shen, life must be lived with purpose. The solution to this is quite simple, really. Getting wound so tight all the time is not a particularly healthy thing to do. So learn to relax! Things don’t always have to go your way.

Another vulnerability? Bing Fire Day Masters in general, are usually advised not to lie! Because your Day Master is so visible, your lies tend to be found out! This caution is doubled for the Bing Shen. Because of your reflected sunlight, all the more your lies will be exposed.

BING SHEN (丙申)/FIRE MONKEY: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Bing Fire, by itself, is already a cheerful and passionate element. With the sunlight reflected in the Bing Shen, this leads to enthusiasm overload. You can use this extraordinary enthusiasm and go-getter energy of the Bing Shen to inspire others and literally change lives.

People are inspired by someone who can point out possibilities they may not have considered or thought unattainable. People are also inspired by someone who conveys an optimistic vision of the future that makes sense to them. Of the 10 Heavenly Stems, only the Bing has the pre-requisite to fulfil those requirements.

BING SHEN, BUT BETTER

Because the Shen (申) is a travelling animal as well as your intelligent star, imagine being so smart that learning comes too easy for you. Little wonder that you are always driven to explore new directions.

So being Bing Shen, But Better calls for crafting a life where you have the freedom to explore many avenues before finally landing on the right path. The sooner you go through this process, the better. Because while this process is on-going, there is a strong chance that you may scatter your energies too wide, resulting in a lack of focus. Developing a greater sense of self-discipline will be the key to bringing the Bing Shen pillar the achievement it craves.

Another important factor is to learn how to filter your friends. Who we hang out with can absolutely affect our achievements. This is particularly true for Bing Shen.

Also, given the intelligence of this pillar, it would also be useful if you can become an outstanding subject-matter expert in a particular topic. So pick one skill, and get so good at it, that the skill literally defines you.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#32 YI WEI (乙未)/WOOD GOAT: THE GIFT OF SHREWDNESS

A plant growing on dry earth. No, not merely growing, but thriving! That’s the image conveyed by the energies of the Yi Wei (乙未) pillar. Yes, something like a cactus. Hey! Cacti can be pretty too, you know. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!

YI WEI (乙未)/WOOD GOAT: OVERVIEW

Let’s take a closer look at this unique plant that thrives in the harshest of environments. While all Yi Wood are survivors by nature, the Yi Wei manifests that trait most of all. Its roots run deep, able to tap into and make full use of every ounce of resource. This is where the shrewdness of the Yi Wei comes from. It reflects a person who can dig deep and make the most of any situation.

YI WEI (乙未)/WOOD GOAT: STRENGTHS

Yi Wei Bazi
  1. Like all Yi Wood Day Masters, the Yi Wei is instinctively a good networker. But the harsh environment in which the cactus grows has taught it to grow thorns as a self-defense mechanism. What this means is that you, the Yi Wei Day Master, will have the tendency to pick and choose your friends. The Yi Wei is already a natural quick judge of character. Basically, unlike other Yi Wood Day Masters, you’re just not that into needless entanglements and competition. Every person you bring into your personal space, is someone you already deem worthy and capable of helping you attain your goals.
  2. This Ding Fire Output Star brings you a taste for luxury living as well as the willingness to work for that ideal lifestyle. You like refinement and charm, don’t you? Another gift of this Ding Fire is spirituality. The Yi Wei day master tends to be spiritually gifted and will have an interest in non-conventional wisdom. In most circumstances, you prefer to develop your own mind and intuition independently from others. Unique to the Yi Wei is an innate understanding or acceptance that you are solely responsible for your own self-development.
  3. Lastly, your Ji Earth Wealth Star represents your perseverance, resilience and persistence that gives you a tenacious mindset that will drive you to extraordinary heights. But note, the key word is tenacity, not stubbornness. There is a big difference between the two. Stubbornness is about not wanting to change your position or mind about something. Tenacity is driven by the determination to achieve your goal.

YI WEI (乙未)/WOOD GOAT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

One of the biggest vulnerabilities of the Yi Wei is your tendency to be a bit of a control freak. Again, this Yi Wood is growing in a harsh environment. This amps up your survival instincts which makes you at once demanding and critical of others.

Additionally, the Yi Wei needs to learn to control your responses to external circumstances that are out of your control. In other words, learn to tell the difference between what you can and cannot change. You see, for all its stillness, the Yi Wei pillar has a bit of an emotional roller coaster deep inside. Unseen by others, you could easily go from the heights of ecstasy to the depths of despair. The biggest challenge to the Yi Wei is to learn to control this tendency for self-torment.

YI WEI (乙未)/WOOD GOAT: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Yi Wei Day Master can come off as a bit of a loner, someone who prefers independence and solitude. Remember those sharp thorns?

Most Yi Wei Day Masters will tend to have a large group of acquaintances but few close friends. Generous and compassionate as you may be, the Yi Wei tends to like being the dominant person in any relationship. Could this be a handicap for you? Depends!

But like a cactus in the desert, your network of acquaintances are often myriad, varied but hidden from view.

YI WEI, BUT BETTER

To trigger a Yi Wei’s strengths is to cultivate a sense of purpose. This is when you truly become unstoppable. Because this sense of purpose, whatever it may be, is what will activate your willingness to work hard for an ideal, your resourcefulness and sheer will. What should this purpose be? You decide!

Additionally, be aware of the Yi Wei’s unquenchable thirst for knowledge. This dry Yi Wei pillar will suck up any and all knowledge. To maximize this gift, learn not only to store knowledge, but also to share knowledge.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#31 JIA WU (甲午)/WOOD HORSE: THE GIFT OF AMBITION

A tall, sturdy tree at the height of summer, planted on hot dry ground. A single spark could potentially set off a catastrophic forest fire. The Jia Wu (甲午) is the very picture of an all-consuming ambition.

JIA WU (甲午)/WOOD HORSE: OVERVIEW

Once again, it’s time to talk about another Jia Wood (甲) pillar. Shall we take another stroll through the woods, together? This time, it’s summer. The ground is dry, pleasant to walk on. We are surrounded by towering trees, their shade offering relief from the burning sun. Sunlight filters through the branches in shafts of gold and green.

But hang on a second… I can hear you asking now – what’s all this bird song got to do with the gift of ambition? Let’s talk about your strengths.

JIA WU (甲午)/WOOD HORSE: STRENGTHS

  1. Like all Jias, the Jia Wu is also supportive, protective and benevolent. As all Jias, this too has a deep-rooted instinct to reach for the skies. An independent pillar, there is a very strong sense of dignity and self-respect that is inherent within the Jia Wu.
  2. However, this Jia sits on a flammable Ding Fire (丁) which represents your Hurting Officer star. In essence, this makes the Jia Wu a maverick among the Jia Pillars. This Ding Fire Hurting Officer lends brilliance and communication skills to the Jia Wu, endowing the usually stoic Jia Wood Day Master with originality, progressiveness and showmanship. This is one of the biggest gifts of the Jia Wu – the ability to pull together knowledge and information from a myriad of sources, and communicate those ideas in a unique and fresh manner.
  3. But the Jia Wu is not all show and no substance. This Jia is grounded in its Ji Earth (己) Direct Wealth star, giving the Jia Wu the industrious perseverance, you need to handle the hard work and execute your plans.

So let’s take the ambition of the Jia Wood, pair it with the showmanship and willingness to challenge the status quo of the Ding Fire Hurting Officer, along with the resourcefulness and hard working nature of the Ji Earth, and we end up with the picture of an all-consuming ambition that drives the Jia Wu Day Master to accomplish great things.

This is someone who will never bow down to life’s challenges. There is a strong willpower and determination here to take charge of their destiny. Always, there is this drive to be more, know more, do more, give more.

Which is a good thing. Because well-aimed ambition, grounded by strong values will create an individual who vibrates at a higher level and gives you the motivation to keep running around and past the obstacles that come your way.

But beware of the burnout.

JIA WU (甲午)/WOOD HORSE: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Of all the pillars, the Jia Wu is the most susceptible to burnout. Think of a raging forest fire and the scorched earth it leaves behind. That might very well happen to the Jia Wu. When the Fire gets too strong, the Jia Wu Day Master will try to take on too much, spread itself too thin, and end up disillusioned and exhausted.

And when that happens, the dark side of the Jia Wu shows up – rebellious and overbearing. Along with the strength of being able to re-brand information (as mentioned in the Strengths), comes a willingness to burn the house down just to prove you are right. This is next level, self-sabotage type of stubborn, we are talking about.

More on the solutions in the final segment, Jia Wu But Better.

JIA WU (甲午)/WOOD HORSE: HOW YOU PRESENT

The maverick Jia Wu carries with it a strong sense of individualism. Its brilliance makes this a difficult pillar to ignore. However, because this Jia sits on the Death Position in the 12 Growth Phases, there may be an indication of emotional instability especially when a self-punishment formation is formed. Therefore, you need to be aware of the Jia Wu pillar’s propensity to come off as having a dual personality, sometimes compassionate, sometimes domineering.

But in general, the Jia Wu Day Master tends to be socially active. You have a preference for those who can match your level of ambition and industriousness. And for those whom the Jia Wu considers friends and allies? The benevolent Jia Wu will do anything for them.

JIA WU, BUT BETTER

The challenge for the Jia Wu Day Master, is to learn to direct this passion and ambition and strike a balance that is aimed at sustainability. Be very aware of your proclivity to burn out.

In this pillar’s energy flow, the Day Master continually exerts strength. Nothing is supporting the Day Master. Which means that you must do it yourself. How? Learn! Open yourself to different thoughts, ideas, philosophies of others. Make your learning as wide-ranging as possible. Remember your unique strength? The ability to re-brand information? The more wide-ranging your knowledge, the more interesting your ideas become. So be the Google!

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#30 GUI SI (癸巳)/WATER SNAKE: THE GIFT OF COLLABORATION

What happens when you place water into an iron receptacle, put a big fire underneath and then channel the resulting vapour? You get to harness the power of steam! That, my friend, is exactly what the Gui Si (癸巳) pillar is all about – the power of steam.

GUI SI (癸巳)/WATER SNAKE: OVERVIEW

The Gui Si is perhaps the most driven, hardworking and noble among the six Gui pillars. Seated on its own Direct Wealth, Direct Officer, and Direct Resource stars, the Gui Si can easily tap on the Wealth-Officer-Seal structure that brings blessings of nobility and success.

The key to making the Gui Si pillar work is to give it direction and purpose. Like the steam in our example, when harnessed properly, it can move a train! But without that direction, the steam scatters into the air and disperses into nothing. This means that, when inspired and committed to a strong purpose, the Gui Si pillar can literally move mountains.

But how does the weak Gui water move a mountain? The answer lies in the crux of the Gui Si pillar, which is the gift of collaboration.

Allow me to elaborate.

GUI SI (癸巳)/WATER SNAKE: STRENGTHS

In the study of Bazi, the Gui Water is deemed as the weakest of the 10 stems. They abhor tough situations. When things get too hot, the Gui Water has been known to scatter, returning only when things cool down. Some may say that the Gui Water is lazy.

I beg to differ.

But before I delve into the individual strengths of each element, I would like to share that the Gui Si pillar by itself sits on a Taiji and Tianyi Nobleman star. This makes the Gui Si, one of the top spiritual pillars, representing not only an interest, but also a talent for spirituality and metaphysics.

Now, let’s talk about your strengths:

Gui Si Bazi
  1. Seated on your own Bing Fire (丙) Direct Wealth, the Gui Si, will certainly put in its fair share of work. But being the smartest worker of them all, why bother doing something yourself when you can get others to do it for you?
  2. Your Wu Earth (戊) Direct Officer star comes in to give the Gui Si its much-needed direction to move mountains. Here is courage. Here is leadership. This Gui Water Day Master does not crumble under pressure. Instead, you excel in situations where leadership and collaboration is called for. Being a highly noble pillar, the Gui Si is not triggered by mere financial achievements alone. In fact, the Gui Si will always worry about money, even when they have plenty of money in the bank. What really drives a Gui Si, is recognition.
  3. You, the Gui Si Day Master, is also seated on your own Geng Metal (庚) Resource star. This means that you are innately intelligent, perceptive and a great strategic thinker. But more than that, this represents the ability to apply critical thinking to any situation. And that is how you are able to master the topics that interest you, by stripping away blind faith and superstition.

Given the three factors above – the ability to work hard, the presence of Noble People, and a thirst for recognition – we circle back to the gift of collaboration that comes automatically to the Gui Si pillar. It’s the gift of not only connecting with people from all walks of life, but to take it one step further by working collaboratively with them. Therefore, the Gui Si’s contact list can be worth its weight in gold.

GUI SI (癸巳)/WATER SNAKE: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The Snake branch is considered as an active star. As a result, the Gui Si Day Master typically will have a stronger need for financial stability than most other people. Basically, this is a case of money never enough.

Now, there is a fun dichotomy in the Gui Si. While this Day Master has awesome organizational skills, it can also be inherently lazy. What this means is that, productivity tend to happen in bursts of activity. There will be periods of intense work, followed by a period of inertia.

For this reason, it’s usually best for the Gui Si to own a business so that others can continue the work while you ‘slack off’.

GUI SI (癸巳)/WATER SNAKE: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Gui Si Day Master can be a bit shy when you first meet people. But once the ice is broken, most people will find the Gui Si to be very original and outgoing. As mentioned, the Snake is an active star, and anyone with this influence will likely enjoy an active social life.

GUI SI, BUT BETTER

Here are three easy ways to maximize the gift of collaboration in the Gui Si pillar:

  1. Be open to meeting new people constantly. The Si (巳) by itself is a very active, travelling star. Forcing the Si (巳) pillar to stay still will result in strong inertia that can prove to be quite difficult to overcome. Therefore, put yourself in situations where it is easy and appropriate to introduce yourself to new contacts. Let’s be realistic about friends. Not all friends stay in our lives forever. Not everyone we meet will become our friends. So that contact list must constantly be topped-up.
  2. Commit to a community. Committing yourself, and establishing yourself within a community is a great way for the Gui Si to find new collaborators. As more people are drawn into the community, so does your contact list grow.
  3. Establish yourself as a giver. Be willing to share knowledge, tips and value on a regular basis. Something as simple as sharing a funny story, or a motivational quote via text messaging is enough to let people know that they are in your thoughts. When you do that, you will indirectly position yourself as a subject matter expert which will not only draw more people into your circle, but more importantly, keep them there.

On a personal note, I have a good friend who happens to be a Gui Si Day Master. She does the above three so naturally, that there are days where I truly envy her for her ability. In our connected world, the ability to bring many people together to work on one objective is a truly powerful talent.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#29 REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: THE GIFT OF SOCIABILITY

Think Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon, think Niagara Falls – perhaps the most famous waterfall in the world. This highly sociable water pillar certainly knows how to make a big splash.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: OVERVIEW

In the classical texts, the Ren Chen pillar has a very poetic name – the Ren Saddling the Dragon’s Back formation.

Because the nature of Water is to flow, a Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon Day Master should ideally see additional Ren (壬) water in the Bazi Chart. The presence of more Ren Water in the chart increases the likelihood of the occurrence of two other special formations which are regarded as highly auspicious.

If the Day Master is born in the Hai hour (hour of the Boar, between 9pm to 11pm at night), a Dragon Returns To Ocean formation is formed. If additional Hai (亥) and Zi (子) is to be found in the chart, the Dragon Driving Into Abyss formation is achieved. This is a positive extension of the Goat Blade formation, a highly unique and favourable formation that indicates an extraordinary life.

But let’s not allow what we have or have not to define who we are. Additional Ren or no Ren, there is one thing that the Ren Chen Day Master does instinctively that will bring you a lot of advantages in your daily dealings with people – your sociability and persuasive skills.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: STRENGTHS

One of the four Fui Kong (Bright Star) pillars, the Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon Day Master will always display all the capabilities, ambitions, and leadership skills of the special quartet.

This ‘waterfall’ looks deceptively fragile. After all, Water is the softest and most fluid of the 5 Elements! But when it cascades at such enormous amounts, this Water can collectively carve caverns out of the Earth.  This represents your inherent ability to overcome any and all obstacles in your way. How do you do that? Let’s examine your strengths.

Sociable, Charismatic,Self-Confident

  1. Your Gui Water (癸) Companion Star makes you one of the most sociable and persuasive Ren Water Day Masters out there. Of the 5 Elements, Water is the one that blends easily together. Think of how the water from the river blends effortlessly into the sea. Having both the Ren Water (壬) Day Master and the Gui Water (癸) Companion Star in a single pillar effectively doubles your ability to blend in with a myriad of social ecosystems. Hence, the gift of sociability. Even though you are not very good at taking orders, it makes you a great team player. When your Gui Water Companion Star is in play, you will always prefer to handle conflict through persuasion instead of confrontation.
  2. If that wasn’t enough, your Yi Wood (乙) Output Star adds yet another irresistible layer of charisma and visionary creativity. Think of this as the rumble and roar of a waterfall as it plunges down into a ravine. It makes a sound like thunder. Your charisma is impossible to ignore! More on in the last segment, because making full use of your Yi Wood (乙) Output Star is the key to becoming Ren Chen (壬辰) but better.
  3. Finally, all-important your Wu Earth (戊) Influence Star. This brings stability to the pillar. Without this tall mountain, there will be no thundering waterfall. This star brings you self-reliance, self-direction and self-sufficiency. This action-taking star is the reason why you always prefer to tackle problems head-on. Because you inherently understand that problems are a natural part of life. There is no running away from them. It also gives you the self-confidence to stand by what you believe in.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

In the study of Bazi, the Rob Wealth, 7 Killings and Hurting Officer are known as the maverick stars. With all three in your Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon Day Pillar, it is inevitable that you are free-spirited and individualistic.

Your biggest vulnerability would be your inclination towards brutal honesty. The Ren Chen individual is very confident. You will speak your mind, and you couldn’t care less if your opinions are offensive to others.

Again, I never believe in tamping down on certain aspects of our own personalities. In most cases, gaining an awareness of this vulnerability is good enough. If this frankness is not creating any problems for you, then let’s just roll with it.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: HOW YOU PRESENT

How would you present? Why super confident, super charismatic, and super friendly, of course! Like how everyone flocks to admire a waterfall, people are drawn to you by your drive and sense of purpose.

Luckily, you enjoy working with people. When your Rob Wealth, 7 Killings and Hurting Officer stars are working in tandem, the result is strong leadership abilities that combine vision, action and collaboration into a lethal package.

REN CHEN, BUT BETTER

One way to be Ren Chen (壬辰), but Better is to ramp up your Yi Wood (乙) Output Star. Learn to brand and market yourself. Get comfortable with speaking to large crowds. The Ren Chen by itself is already a very visible pillar. The more you stand out, the more people are drawn to you, the more successful you will be.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#28 XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: THE GIFT OF LEVERAGE

Combining two (and only two) networking stars together into a single pillar – the precision of the Xin Metal together with the networking skills of the Yi Wood – Xin Mao (辛卯) is undoubtedly the gift of leverage.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: OVERVIEW

In the ancient texts, the Xin Mao pillar is often depicted as a priceless antique, fragile but burnished to high perfection. This translates into an individual who holds high principles in life. In other words, the Xin Mao Day Master, literally, aspires to perfection.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: STRENGTHS

Xin Mao Bazi
  1. Let’s start with this Xin Metal Day Master. Shiny, glittery, sharp and polished, you are a natural over-achiever who is endowed with a strong will. You understand that, in order to achieve, you must persevere.
  2. While all Xin Metal understands the power of leverage, this gift is particularly distilled within the Xin Mao pillar. The reason is because, this Xin Day Master sits on the singular energy of the master connector, the Yi Wood. Combined, the Xin Metal’s natural ability to shine and the Yi Wood’s social skills, allow you to move easily among a broad spectrum of social groups.

Additionally, this Yi Wood energy is also your Indirect Wealth energy – representing your strong entrepreneurial instincts. This is your ability to create opportunities through an instinctive understanding of the wants and needs of others. A rather descriptive way to elaborate on this point would be to refer to our first example of the antique. The owner may not need it, but the owner certainly wants it for the prestige it brings. This is how the Xin Mao uses its gift of leverage.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

What we have here again, is a straight-forward Metal-Wood clash. But unlike the previous Geng Yin pillar, this is a less ‘noisy’ clash. Instead, this clash typically manifests as emotional vulnerability. Just look at the picture this pillar presents – sharp metal on the outside, soft wood on the inside.

This emotional vulnerability is the biggest chink in your armor. Because of this feeling of defencelessness, you have a hard time allowing your real personality to shine through. What? Open up and be vulnerable? Are you kidding me?

Because of this, some Xin Mao Day Masters constantly need to create strategies to deal with self-doubt and insecurities. Remember we said earlier that the Xin Mao is someone who holds high principles in life? Externally you aspire to perfection, but internally you are easily hurt by the mildest of criticisms. This ‘gap’ needs to be bridged.

Some Xin Mao Day Masters counter this by dressing up. Your clothes become your armour. Others cover their sensitivities through blunt speech. And you end up coming off as patronizing.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: HOW YOU PRESENT

But, whether you realize it or not, the Xin Mao is often blessed with charm and attractiveness. That’s because you sit on a Peach Blossom star that bequeaths you with that dash of panache, style and elegance.

Externally, the Xin Mao tends to project an aloof and serious demeanour. Proud, naturally hardworking and independent, you have a wonderful knack of making others feel unwanted, unneeded or unnecessary. Oops!

XIN MAO, BUT BETTER

Maximizing this pillar is simple – making conscious use of your strategic networks to achieve your goals.

Given the penchant for blunt speech, another easy way to be Xin Mao, But Better is simply to enhance your communications skills – especially the art of verbal communications. Cultivating this ability at the right time will give you a deeper sense of confidence that will allow the Xin Mao pillar to truly shine.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.
