#29 REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: THE GIFT OF SOCIABILITY

Think Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon, think Niagara Falls – perhaps the most famous waterfall in the world. This highly sociable water pillar certainly knows how to make a big splash.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: OVERVIEW

In the classical texts, the Ren Chen pillar has a very poetic name – the Ren Saddling the Dragon’s Back formation.

Because the nature of Water is to flow, a Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon Day Master should ideally see additional Ren (壬) water in the Bazi Chart. The presence of more Ren Water in the chart increases the likelihood of the occurrence of two other special formations which are regarded as highly auspicious.

If the Day Master is born in the Hai hour (hour of the Boar, between 9pm to 11pm at night), a Dragon Returns To Ocean formation is formed. If additional Hai (亥) and Zi (子) is to be found in the chart, the Dragon Driving Into Abyss formation is achieved. This is a positive extension of the Goat Blade formation, a highly unique and favourable formation that indicates an extraordinary life.

But let’s not allow what we have or have not to define who we are. Additional Ren or no Ren, there is one thing that the Ren Chen Day Master does instinctively that will bring you a lot of advantages in your daily dealings with people – your sociability and persuasive skills.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: STRENGTHS

One of the four Fui Kong (Bright Star) pillars, the Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon Day Master will always display all the capabilities, ambitions, and leadership skills of the special quartet.

This ‘waterfall’ looks deceptively fragile. After all, Water is the softest and most fluid of the 5 Elements! But when it cascades at such enormous amounts, this Water can collectively carve caverns out of the Earth.  This represents your inherent ability to overcome any and all obstacles in your way. How do you do that? Let’s examine your strengths.

Sociable, Charismatic,Self-Confident

  1. Your Gui Water (癸) Companion Star makes you one of the most sociable and persuasive Ren Water Day Masters out there. Of the 5 Elements, Water is the one that blends easily together. Think of how the water from the river blends effortlessly into the sea. Having both the Ren Water (壬) Day Master and the Gui Water (癸) Companion Star in a single pillar effectively doubles your ability to blend in with a myriad of social ecosystems. Hence, the gift of sociability. Even though you are not very good at taking orders, it makes you a great team player. When your Gui Water Companion Star is in play, you will always prefer to handle conflict through persuasion instead of confrontation.
  2. If that wasn’t enough, your Yi Wood (乙) Output Star adds yet another irresistible layer of charisma and visionary creativity. Think of this as the rumble and roar of a waterfall as it plunges down into a ravine. It makes a sound like thunder. Your charisma is impossible to ignore! More on in the last segment, because making full use of your Yi Wood (乙) Output Star is the key to becoming Ren Chen (壬辰) but better.
  3. Finally, all-important your Wu Earth (戊) Influence Star. This brings stability to the pillar. Without this tall mountain, there will be no thundering waterfall. This star brings you self-reliance, self-direction and self-sufficiency. This action-taking star is the reason why you always prefer to tackle problems head-on. Because you inherently understand that problems are a natural part of life. There is no running away from them. It also gives you the self-confidence to stand by what you believe in.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

In the study of Bazi, the Rob Wealth, 7 Killings and Hurting Officer are known as the maverick stars. With all three in your Ren Chen (壬辰) or Water Dragon Day Pillar, it is inevitable that you are free-spirited and individualistic.

Your biggest vulnerability would be your inclination towards brutal honesty. The Ren Chen individual is very confident. You will speak your mind, and you couldn’t care less if your opinions are offensive to others.

Again, I never believe in tamping down on certain aspects of our own personalities. In most cases, gaining an awareness of this vulnerability is good enough. If this frankness is not creating any problems for you, then let’s just roll with it.

REN CHEN (壬辰)/WATER DRAGON: HOW YOU PRESENT

How would you present? Why super confident, super charismatic, and super friendly, of course! Like how everyone flocks to admire a waterfall, people are drawn to you by your drive and sense of purpose.

Luckily, you enjoy working with people. When your Rob Wealth, 7 Killings and Hurting Officer stars are working in tandem, the result is strong leadership abilities that combine vision, action and collaboration into a lethal package.

REN CHEN, BUT BETTER

One way to be Ren Chen (壬辰), but Better is to ramp up your Yi Wood (乙) Output Star. Learn to brand and market yourself. Get comfortable with speaking to large crowds. The Ren Chen by itself is already a very visible pillar. The more you stand out, the more people are drawn to you, the more successful you will be.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#28 XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: THE GIFT OF LEVERAGE

Combining two (and only two) networking stars together into a single pillar – the precision of the Xin Metal together with the networking skills of the Yi Wood – Xin Mao (辛卯) is undoubtedly the gift of leverage.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: OVERVIEW

In the ancient texts, the Xin Mao pillar is often depicted as a priceless antique, fragile but burnished to high perfection. This translates into an individual who holds high principles in life. In other words, the Xin Mao Day Master, literally, aspires to perfection.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: STRENGTHS

Xin Mao Bazi
  1. Let’s start with this Xin Metal Day Master. Shiny, glittery, sharp and polished, you are a natural over-achiever who is endowed with a strong will. You understand that, in order to achieve, you must persevere.
  2. While all Xin Metal understands the power of leverage, this gift is particularly distilled within the Xin Mao pillar. The reason is because, this Xin Day Master sits on the singular energy of the master connector, the Yi Wood. Combined, the Xin Metal’s natural ability to shine and the Yi Wood’s social skills, allow you to move easily among a broad spectrum of social groups.

Additionally, this Yi Wood energy is also your Indirect Wealth energy – representing your strong entrepreneurial instincts. This is your ability to create opportunities through an instinctive understanding of the wants and needs of others. A rather descriptive way to elaborate on this point would be to refer to our first example of the antique. The owner may not need it, but the owner certainly wants it for the prestige it brings. This is how the Xin Mao uses its gift of leverage.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

What we have here again, is a straight-forward Metal-Wood clash. But unlike the previous Geng Yin pillar, this is a less ‘noisy’ clash. Instead, this clash typically manifests as emotional vulnerability. Just look at the picture this pillar presents – sharp metal on the outside, soft wood on the inside.

This emotional vulnerability is the biggest chink in your armor. Because of this feeling of defencelessness, you have a hard time allowing your real personality to shine through. What? Open up and be vulnerable? Are you kidding me?

Because of this, some Xin Mao Day Masters constantly need to create strategies to deal with self-doubt and insecurities. Remember we said earlier that the Xin Mao is someone who holds high principles in life? Externally you aspire to perfection, but internally you are easily hurt by the mildest of criticisms. This ‘gap’ needs to be bridged.

Some Xin Mao Day Masters counter this by dressing up. Your clothes become your armour. Others cover their sensitivities through blunt speech. And you end up coming off as patronizing.

XIN MAO (辛卯)/METAL RABBIT: HOW YOU PRESENT

But, whether you realize it or not, the Xin Mao is often blessed with charm and attractiveness. That’s because you sit on a Peach Blossom star that bequeaths you with that dash of panache, style and elegance.

Externally, the Xin Mao tends to project an aloof and serious demeanour. Proud, naturally hardworking and independent, you have a wonderful knack of making others feel unwanted, unneeded or unnecessary. Oops!

XIN MAO, BUT BETTER

Maximizing this pillar is simple – making conscious use of your strategic networks to achieve your goals.

Given the penchant for blunt speech, another easy way to be Xin Mao, But Better is simply to enhance your communications skills – especially the art of verbal communications. Cultivating this ability at the right time will give you a deeper sense of confidence that will allow the Xin Mao pillar to truly shine.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#27 GENG YIN (庚寅)/METAL TIGER: THE GIFT OF COURAGE

What happens when you send an axe into a forest? The axe quickly tries to make short work of the trees, is what happens! That’s precisely the imagery conveyed by the Geng Yin (庚寅) – an intense image of Metal meeting Wood – a profile in Courage! Not only does this pillar dare to be different, it relishes being in combat-mode.

GENG YIN (庚寅)/METAL TIGER: OVERVIEW

When it comes to getting things done, the Geng Yin is bound to count as one of the frontrunners among the 60 Jia Zi pillars. From my introductory paragraph, had I just planted an image of an axe in your head? If I had, then good! Let’s run with this!

Much like the example, the Geng Yin is all about being an efficient executioner. You will have a tendency to lower your head, set things into motion, and get things done by bulldozing past obstacles, objections and naysayers. That’s right, this noisy chatterbox of a pillar loves nothing more than challenges! To borrow a phrase from Adidas, in the Geng Yin’s world, impossible ain’t nothing!

Let’s burrow in on the Geng Yin to get a better understanding of what makes this pillar tick.

GENG YIN (庚寅)/METAL TIGER: STRENGTHS

Geng Yin Bazi
  1. In this case, the execution skills of the Geng Metal sits on a Jia Wood (甲) Wealth star. As the Indirect Wealth is a forward-looking profile while Jia governs growth and development, this combination allows the Geng Yin to see future opportunities that can be shaped where others see present-day obstacles. Because of that, the Geng Yin always demonstrates a willingness to take chances.
  2. Having identified the opportunities, the Geng Yin will then start to take action by using its Bing Fire (丙) Officer star. Here, the Bing Fire’s natural optimism and stick-to-itiveness is what helps the Geng Yin continue fighting the battle, even after everyone else had called it quits. (Side note: yes, stick-to-itiveness really is a word. I checked!)
  3. The experiences gathered throughout the journey is incorporated broadly into the Wu Earth (戊) Resource star which further produces the Geng Metal and helps you stand your ground and lends faith to your decisions. This is your ability to learn from experience. Bolstered by this Resource star, the Geng Yin Day Master is typically inquisitive.
  4. And let’s not forget, the Geng Metal Day Master itself which is often irrepressible, forceful and dynamic.

When combined, these key traits are the very elements of the courage represented by the Geng Yin pillar. For the Geng Yin, easy just don’t cut it! The Geng Yin is one Day Master who will never shy away from hard work, believing that hardship builds character.

GENG YIN (庚寅)/METAL TIGER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The only drawback to this attitude? Don’t get stuck in the wrong fights! Because of the Geng Metal’s ability to take pain, it’s akin to someone who opts to hack their way through a forest, ignoring the smooth highway beside them.

While others easily see the talent and intelligence of the Geng Yin Day Master, they will frequently miss the sensitivity that exists below the surface. Geng Metals tend to show a rough and tough exterior, but isn’t it true that the hardest characters are the ones who are most emotionally vulnerable?

In the case of the Geng Yin Day Master, this sensitivity stems from a hyper-critical nature that is critical of others, and also of themselves. Reining in this aspect of the Geng Yin personality can truly help you become even more efficient and powerful.

GENG YIN (庚寅)/METAL TIGER: HOW YOU PRESENT

Like all pillars where Metal meets Wood, the Geng Yin will tend to be quite the chatterbox. You’re noisy and fun! Witty and vivacious, the Geng Yin has no problems getting attention. But it is when you display your courage through your actions, that is when you start to inspire and motivate other people to follow you.

GENG YIN, BUT BETTER

So it should be obvious by now that this courage held within the Geng Yin can be a double-edged sword (all puns intended). Holding so much courage within you is awesome! You just need to remember to put your head up every once in a while to get the lay of the land – simply so you don’t keep hacking away unnecessarily.

Also, the Geng Metal is designed to serve. So put yourself in the position to serve! This Geng Yin Day Master literally represents Metal of the finest quality. You are supported by your resource, you have Wealth to chop, and forged by Fire. The rust has literally been removed, leaving the keenest and finest edge possible. The more people you can serve, the more successful you will be.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#26 JI CHOU (己丑): THE GIFT OF RESOURCEFULNESS

The Ji Chou (己丑) carries the image of dark, wet soil, packed with minerals, the very epitome of the gift of resourcefulness.

JI CHOU (己丑)/EARTH OX: OVERVIEW

Let’s think about the picture that the Ji Chou presents for a minute. Winter comes to an end, the snows are receding. While patches of white snow still lies on the ground, most have been absorbed into the soil. Rich in resources, the hidden minerals in this soil represents your creativity that must be honed, so that your results will grow and flourish. In other words, the land needs to be tilled. This is the resourcefulness of the Ji Chou pillar.

JI CHOU (己丑)/EARTH OX: STRENGTHS

  1. From a technical point of view, the Ji Chou sits on your own Ji Earth (己) Companion star, which imparts a high degree of confidence, independence, and the predisposition to work well with others. Easy-going by nature, the Ji Chou is an eager and optimistic participant of life. You believe that life must be lived to the fullest.
  2. The Ji Chou Day Master also sits on a high-quality Eating God star. This Xin Metal (辛) Output star is the source of your originality, inventiveness, and endless curiosity. It would be even better if you have many different outlets for your creativity.
  3. Your Gui Water (癸) Wealth star gives you a penchant for hard work. The Ji Chou Day Master is not one to sit around waiting and dreaming of miracles. Given how resourceful you are, you are the creator of miracles in your own life.

The above traits, coupled with the absorbent nature of the Ji Earth, results in a resourceful and creative individual with a high level of acceptance as well as an easy-going and giving nature. That’s pretty much Ji Chou in a nutshell.

Did you know that the Ji Chou formation is also known as the Golden God Noble? This represents the gift of attracting noble people into your own life. And conversely, it also represents your ability to extend help to others when required. Because of this, the Ji Chou Day Master will never need to worry about not having enough resources to help you reach your goals.

JI CHOU (己丑)/EARTH OX: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Yet for all the resources and noble help available to the Ji Chou Day Master, (or perhaps because of the sheer resourcefulness of the Ji Chou), you have a lamentable tendency to reject help! Preferring to be independent and self-reliant.

The Ji Chou (己丑) or Earth Ox pillar presents the image of a layer of soil at the top, covering the treasures within. From a negative point of view, this represents a tendency to be rather secretive and suspicious.

Finally, perhaps the Ji Chou’s biggest weakness is your inability to stick to the plan. Tantalized by new interests and new adventures, the Ji Chou can easily be derailed by a loss of focus. For the Ji Chou, having a detailed plan and the discipline to stick to the plan, will be the key to your success.

JI CHOU (己丑)/EARTH OX: HOW YOU PRESENT

Because the Ji Chou is naturally resourceful, people tend to describe you as someone who is fascinating to talk to. This wide swarth of knowledge that you hold is very appealing. Couple that with your persuasive speaking skills, and you have the potential to amass many people together under your leadership. Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? Just make sure you don’t trip on your ego on your way out!

JI CHOU, BUT BETTER

A successful professional – whether an entrepreneur or a salaried employee – needs a wide range of traits to succeed. Among others, discipline, hard work, confidence, self-belief, and many more. But when it comes to achieving your professional goals, there is nothing quite like the ability to be resourceful.

Here, the Ji Chou’s ability to learn new information rapidly, your natural inquisitiveness and openness to new ideas, becomes a big advantage. Like any other skills, resourcefulness is something that can be developed. Here are three ways:

  • Be open-minded. Use the accepting nature of the Ji Earth to open yourself to new possibilities and ideas.
  • Think outside the box. Use the sharp acuity, ingenuity and imagination of the Xin Metal to its fullest potential.
  • Take action now. Use the restlessness of the Gui Water in a positive way by learning to take pro-active action instead of postponing your success. More importantly, develop the knack to use knowledge instead of just storing it.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#25 WU ZI (戊子)/EARTH RAT: THE GIFT OF MYSTERY

Like a mist-covered mountain, the Wu Zi (戊子) pillar is one that is wreathed in mystery and enigma.

WU ZI (戊子)/EARTH RAT: OVERVIEW

One of the 6 Elegant Days, the Wu Zi day master is endowed with intelligence and elegance. Much like the Ding Hai pillar before this, here too, the Wu Earth Stem combines with the Gui Water in the Branch. When this combination happens, the outcome brings a strong sense of nobility and refinement to this Day Master.

WU ZI (戊子)/EARTH RAT: STRENGTH

Wu Zi Bazi
  1. Like all Wu Earth, the Wu Zi is very strong willed. Persistence and perseverance are the hallmark of the Wu Earth Day Masters.
  2. Sitting only on your Direct Wealth Star, the Wu Zi is relentlessly hardworking and a terrific problem solver. This is a highly ambitious pillar grounded with a practical worldview that is driven by knowledge.  In other words, you are someone who is always reliable, hardworking and incredibly practical – a highly efficient team member with natural leadership abilities.

But why did I use the gift of mystery to describe the Wu Zi pillar? Let’s think about this mountain for a minute. The mountain is always there, stolid, steadfast and unchanging. But what’s ever-changing is the ribbons of mist and clouds around it.

Because of the mist, the Wu Zi is a highly secretive individual, less given to speaking your mind. But this sense of enigmatic mystery can work in your favour. It draws people to you and keeps them guessing and intrigued as they glimpse different facets of your Wu Zi personality.

This pillar is usually indicative of a higher power, or likes to play the role of the mastermind, hidden behind the scenes.

WU ZI (戊子)/EARTH RAT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

But beneath the positive outward appearance, there are some threats that need to be dealt with in this post.

The relative instability of this pillar manifests as a difficulty in controlling your emotions. Wu Zi Day Masters are typically blessed with physical attractiveness. But because you care about the way you are perceived, most Wu Zi Day Masters end up battling low self-esteem issues at some point in their lives.

The other vulnerability would be the strength of emotions within this pillar. Remember, the Wu Zi tends to be rather enigmatic. A very private individual, in fact. This may become a problem because, you are emotionally sensitive, but you have trouble expressing those emotions. Again, because you probably care too much about how others perceive you.

WU ZI (戊子)/EARTH RAT: HOW YOU PRESENT

Yet, as it turns out, there are benefits of being enigmatic and mysterious. Who woulda thunk it, right?

The sense of mystery that the Wu Zi exudes, gives you an intimidating presence as a leader. In this case, the sheer unpredictability and contradictory nature of the Wu Zi compels people to pay attention, lest they miss out on what you might do next.

Strong and independent, the Wu Zi is at its most comfortable around mentally stimulating individuals. You tend to draw smart and creative people into your circle, best if they challenge your intellect.

WU ZI, BUT BETTER

Learning to stay centered either through spiritual pursuits or self-awareness exercises would help you maintain your equilibrium. Why spiritual pursuits in particular? Because this Wu Earth Day Master is produced by Fire. And Fire represents joy, passion, happiness, spiritual transformation, body-mind-spirit alignment.

So this Fire could be many things to you. It could be yoga, meditation, energy healing, or a host of other different platforms. The key to finding your joy is to find your passion.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#23 BING XU (丙戌)/FIRE DOG: THE GIFT OF GENEROSITY

The selfless magnanimity of the Bing Fire coupled with the steadfast abundance of Wu Earth, the Bing Xu (丙戌) is all about the gift of generosity.

BING XU (丙戌)/FIRE DOG: OVERVIEW

For those of us who have been privileged to visit the Alps, there is a unique sunset phenomenon called Alpenglow. The sun is nowhere on the horizon, yet the white-capped mountains are illuminated with a rosy tinge. It’s a picture that is evocative, mystical, and yes, romantic. This phenomenon, the Alpenglow, is the very picture presented by the Bing Xu pillar.

There is a delightful child-like innocence about the Bing Xu and how they get so excited with new ideas and experiences. Usually optimistic, typically intelligent, but sometimes a little too emotional, the Bing Xu is loaded with gifts aplenty. You just need to learn some flexibility.

BING XU (丙戌)/FIRE DOG: STRENGTHS

  1. The energies of the Bing Xu (丙戌) or Fire Dog begins with your Bing Fire (丙) Day Master and your Ding Fire (丁) Companion star. The Bing Fire Day Master is often described as someone magnanimous, giving, selfless, and generous. Positive, consistent, and loyal to a fault, toiling for the greater good is where the Bing Xu will truly excel.
  2. Seated on your own Wu Earth (戊) Output star, this Bing Fire’s natural giving nature is augmented by a strong sense of innocence and creativity. Here is your romantic soul, your rich fantasy life. This is the one that gives you such great depth of vision. Of the 60 Jia Zi pillars, here is the dreamer.
  3. But before you label the Bing Xu as a snowflake, let me stop you right there. Your Xin Metal (辛) Wealth star – shrewd, analytical, practical, and most of all precise – is there to turn dreams into practical reality.

Put them all together, the Bing Xu (丙戌) or Fire Dog Day Master easily combines artistic flair with precise organizational skills. This is a pillar with a lot to give.

BING XU (丙戌)/FIRE DOG: HOW YOU PRESENT

Relationships are very important for you, the Bing Xu (丙戌) Day Master. Let’s face it, you like to be popular. Luckily for you, people are literally drawn to your magnetic personality. They feel that deep compassion in you and it is normal for the Bing Xu to be the rock that everyone leans on.

BING XU (丙戌)/FIRE DOG: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

If there was one weakness of the Bing Xu pillar, it is a particular resistance to sudden change. First, we have this persistent and routine-loving Bing Fire. This Bing Fire is anchored by a solid and unmovable Wu Earth that craves security. How flexible do you think the Bing Xu can be? In traditional Bazi, this formation is called the Sun Trapped In Earth Net.

But this is not a vulnerability that causes big concerns. There is a plus side to it. The innate positivity of the Bing Fire, coupled with the sheer persistence of this particular Day Master, allows the Bing Xu to recover quickly from any setbacks. Like the sun rising on the horizon every day, the routine-loving Bing will be back to tackle the obstacles again and again and again.

BING XU, BUT BETTER

For this reason, Bing Fire individuals are always advised to regularly review their plans to make sure that the battles they are fighting are still relevant to their goals. In other words, don’t fight just for the sake of fighting.

In a world that is often dominated by the poverty mindset, the Bing Xu is naturally clued in on the benefits of generosity. Social scientists have long found that people who generously give their time, money and abilities are healthier, happier and more confident that those who do not. Being generous is a gift that keeps on giving, benefitting not just the receiver but also the giver. It prevents depression, makes you more socially networked and physically active. And there is strong neurological science behind that discovery. Acting generously causes neurochemical changes in the brain that brings out the pleasure response and create an upward spiral for the giver.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#22 YI YOU (乙酉)/WOOD ROOSTER: THE GIFT OF STRATEGIC NETWORKING

The gift of strategic networking is of course, not merely confined to the Yi You (乙酉) pillar. Anyone of the 60 pillars can learn this art. But the Yi You, soft and weak on the outside, but possessing of an inner drive and action-oriented approach, perfectly embodies this ability.

In this weeks’ post, let’s explore the many facets of strategic networking. But brace yourself, this will be a long read ahead. Wherever the Yi You is to be found in your chart, you already have the natural gift of strategic networking. Even if you don’t have the Yi You in your chart, it can be learned.

YI YOU (乙酉)/WOOD ROOSTER: OVERVIEW

The Yi You is usually likened to a man-made plant-like ornament or a potted plant. Think of a bonsai! This pretty plant is not grown to be hidden in a jungle. It’s meant to stand out! It’s meant to draw in admiration and appreciated. Smart, friendly, witty and charming, the Yi You likes nothing better than a spot in the sun.

YI YOU (乙酉)/WOOD ROOSTER: STRENGTHS

A Yi Wood Day Master always possess some degree of charm and elegance. Like a pretty flower! This flowering plant is seated on top of a Peach Blossom star, which attracts many friends and admirers your way.

This elegant Yi Wood looks sophisticated and non-threatening. But watch out! Seated on your 7 Killings star, the Yi You (乙酉) or Wood Rooster combines the swiftness of the Yin Wood with the precision of Yin Metal in your modus operandi. In other words, this formation represents your mental acuity.

Cleverness certainly plays a major role in making optimum use of the Yi You pillar. Honing this sharp mental acuity is how the Yi You survives in what it perceives to be a dog-eat-dog world.

From a classical point of view, this could be detrimental as it is equated with guile and deception. But again I must ask, is guile and deception always a bad thing? Before we judge, how about we replace those two words with one that is prized in today’s world – strategic? We’ll talk more about this at the end, when we get down to Yi You, But Better.

But first, let’s take a look at your vulnerabilities.

YI YOU (乙酉)/WOOD ROOSTER: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Yi You Bazi

Your Xin Metal (辛) Killings star that brings you such courage, drive and audacity is also your weakness. Because the Influence element is the element that controls us, this Xin Metal Killings star of yours could literally crush the strengths of the Yi Wood Day Master.

How would you know if your Xin Metal (辛) Killings star is too strong? The first clue would be a lack of self-confidence. The dark side of the Yi You Day Master tends to be touchy and emotional. While that itself is not really a big problem, the bigger issue here is that you would tend to be too damned aware of your own vulnerabilities. You waste too much time trying to cover up your ‘perceived’ weaknesses instead of playing up your strengths.

Also, being a rootless pillar, there is always a danger of becoming too fickle. Self-imposed discipline is needed here, in liberal doses if required, to boost the cleverness with perseverance and determination.

YI YOU, BUT BETTER

Let’s go back to the example of the bonsai that represents you. Obviously, growing in a pot, you will not be able to expand horizontally. Therefore, logically, the only way left is up!

Like a vine latching on to a building, a tree or a stick to climb closer to the sun, the Yi You is naturally attracted to the limelight, and most of all, to successful people. This strategic approach will mean that people tend to wander in and out of your orbit, depending on the role they play in your current plans. However, this ability of the Yi Wood to prop itself up by relying on other elements, is exactly what strategic networking is all about.

Strategic Networking: It’s Not About Being Manipulative

Let’s clear a common misconception about networking here. Networking is not an insincere or manipulative way to elegantly use people. It’s about creating a web of personal contacts who provide the feedback, support, information, resources and insight that all of us need to grow.

This discomfort around strategic networking is perfectly understandable. Society has taught us to rise through the ranks by dint of task-based accomplishments. Strategic networking requires relational, instead of transactional, tasks.

Strategic networking is more than just a case of mutual back-scratching. Instead, the Harvard Business Review has identified three distinct but interdependent forms of networking – operational, personal and strategic.

Three Types of Strategic Networking

Operational Networking

Operational networking is the most common form of networking. This is about how you get your job done. The depth and scope of this network can differ, but includes direct reports, superiors, peers, other internal forces that can expedite or block a project, as well as outside forces like customers, distributors or suppliers.

The purpose of this network, as mentioned, is to get things done. It is not concerned with what should be done. All of us have operational networks. These relationships are forced based on the tasks required and tend to be constrained by the job at hand.

In a Bazi coaching session, when we start talking about the need to expand on networking, many people will automatically assume that they should improve on their operational network. But for the coaching session to take effect, as a person grows, his or her network must be recalibrated externally and become more future-oriented.

Which leads us to the next point…

Personal Networking

The Harvard Business Review defines Personal Networking as ‘professional associations, alumni groups, clubs, and personal interest communities through which a person gain new perspectives that allow them to advance in their careers.’

Which begs the question – why should you waste precious time on an activity that is not directly related with what you need to do? After all, there’s barely enough time in the day to clear your own deck.

This personal network is where the bulk of your developmental support (think: coaching or mentoring), information and referrals will come from.

Remember the six-degrees of separation theory? That is what the personal network is all about – it is composed of acquaintances with whom we have something in common. This personal network forms the base for the next and ultimate step, Strategic Networking.

Strategic Networking

This final stage is comprised of lateral and vertical relationships with people outside of our immediate control. The role of this network is to figure out how our own contributions fit into the big picture.

At this stage, the task of the Strategic Network is to help formulate broad business objectives. It is no longer concerned about functional objectives. The value of being plugged into a Strategic Network is to get keyed in on shifting business trends.

Strategic Networking is about influence. The ability to leverage the resources, information and support from one sector of the network to achieve results in another. Instead of merely influencing their environment, the smart Strategic Networker strives to mould it to become favourable to their own goals.

A Last Word on Strategic Networking

The topic of strategic networking is very closely related to the topic of Noble Persons in the study of Bazi. At the end of the day, it’s about the same thing – someone coming to you with the information or resource you need to move you one step closer to your goal.

With or without the Yi You in your chart, this is a skill that can be learnt. To start, learn to serve. Remember, strategic networking is a two-way street. In order to get, you must first give.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#21 JIA SHEN (甲申)/WOOD MONKEY: THE GIFT OF COMPARTMENTALIZATION

The Jia Shen (甲申) pillar offers a unique gift – the gift of compartmentalization.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to go on a descriptive bend. But with the Jia Shen, I can. Shall we take a hike of imagination together?

JIA SHEN (甲申)/WOOD MONKEY: OVERVIEW

It’s Autumn. The perfect weather for a long trek in the woods. The air is cool and crisp. Meandering down the trails, we come upon a lake. Beside it, a majestic tree in full autumn foliage – emerald greens mixed with gold and ruby red. Drawn to its beauty, we go closer, only to realize that there is an axe-head embedded deep in the trunk. But wait, the axe does not look to have harmed the tree in any way. Instead, the tree has just simply… grown over it.

This ability to envelope any foreign objects with scar tissue and keep growing is something inherent in all trees. Scientifically, botanists call this ability – compartmentalization.

JIA SHEN (甲申)/WOOD MONKEY: STRENGTHS

Strong communications skills is the hallmark of the Jia Shen (甲申) or Wood Monkey Day Master. Seated on its own 7 Killings, Indirect Wealth and Indirect Resource, the Jia Shen is a dynamic and fearless pillar that crave challenges. To you, obstacles are nothing more than delightful puzzles to be solved. In traditional Bazi, this trio – the 7 Killings-Indirect Wealth-Indirect Resource – are known as the Wealth-Officer-Seal formation. What it means is that this Jia wood is sitting on a continuous production/re-generation cycle. This phenomenon brings out the true quality of the Jia Wood, consistent growth.

Jia Shen Bazi
  1. Your Wu Earth (戊) Wealth Star makes you a powerful and visionary leader. The Jia Shen is endowed with strong business and strategic instincts. But I must add that having it is not enough. This just means that you have a natural talent for business. You must, on your own effort, develop these skills. Learn to spot opportunities, train yourself to become more effective and efficient, learn to leverage!
  2. Your Geng Metal (庚) Killings star endow an already-competitive Jia Wood with an appetite for risk. Dynamic and fearless, challenges are fun because you truly enjoy the process of taking on new challenges, learning new things, and the satisfaction of solving new problems.
  3. Your Ren Water (壬) Resource star represents regeneration, the ability to bounce back from disappointments.

Armed with this 7K-IW-IR combination, the Jia Shen will have the courage to take on projects or businesses that may be a loss-leaders in the short-run, with the sure knowledge and confidence in their ability to turn that loss-leader into further profitable businesses.

However, money may not be the driving factor for the Jia Shen. Instead, it is motivated by the thrill of the hunt, and perhaps, more accurately, by the delicious satisfaction of having proven a point!

Along that journey, there will undoubtedly be many painful lessons to be learnt. Here, let’s refer again to the example of our majestic tree. In-bred into the Jia Shen’s personality, is the ability to absorb the blows, incorporate the lessons and bounce back stronger and smarter as a result.

JIA SHEN (甲申)/WOOD MONKEY: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

In most cases, it is normal for the Jia Shen Day Master to experience hardship early in life. Any success must be self-made. The Jia Shen pillar typically does not receive much noble help. So learning to bootstrap and hustle early in life will go a long way towards helping you to achieve your dreams.

JIA SHEN (甲申)/WOOD MONKEY: HOW YOU PRESENT

Boisterous with a capital B! Anytime Metal meets Wood in a single pillar, we can expect the Day Master to be a bit of a chatterbox. The Jia Shen Day Master is no different. The Jia Shen is one of the more flexible of the six Jia pillars. In this respect, your articulate communications skills is one of your biggest assets.

JIA SHEN, BUT BETTER

However, for all your outgoing façade, there is a secret part of the Jia Shen Day Master who needs regular me-time to spend in quiet contemplation. This is your ‘thinking time’. This me-time is super important because this is how the Jia Shen regenerates.

Therefore, being Jia Shen But Better could be as simple as scheduling regular thinking time for yourself. Take time off from being the centre of attention for a while. Hit that ‘Do Not Disturb’ button, and allow yourself to dive inwards and lose yourself in the pleasure of stimulating your mental prowess.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#20 GUI WEI (癸未)/WATER GOAT: THE GIFT OF ARTISTRY

The Gui Wei (癸未) or Water Goat is often described as water in its vapor form – formless, shapeless, and colourless. This scenario depicts a person who is constantly on the move in search of new opportunities.

GUI WEI (癸未)/WATER GOAT: OVERVIEW

Two impatient water pillars back to back is testing my writing skills to the limit. Once again, just like the previous post with the Ren Wu (壬午), we again have Water at the top, and fire at the bottom. Fortunately, (for me that is), there are other hidden stems in the equation that distinguishes the Gui Wei from the Ren Wu.

Think of a hot spring wreathed in mists, bubbling over with emotions. The Gui Wei sits on a hidden Eating God producing Wealth formation, creating an individual who is idealistic, opportunistic and adventurous. This is a pillar that combines deep imagination with pragmatic practicality.

GUI WEI (癸未)/WATER GOAT: STRENGTH

Gui Wei Day Master

Like all Gui Water Day Masters, the Gui Wei will tend to be more spiritually aware and deeply sensitive of your environment. In the case of this pillar, however, we see your [1] Gui Day Master, producing your [2] Yi Wood (乙) Output star , which then produces your [3] Ding Fire (丁) Wealth star, and culminating with your [4] Ji Earth (己) Killing star.

This delicate balance of the elements within the Gui Wei pillar itself, suggests that the [1] Gui Wei Day Master would likely be less flighty than your other Gui counterparts. This would be someone with the ability to exercise self-control and who is able to create and sustain a workable system for you to thrive.

The gift of artistry infused within the Gui Wei Day Master lies in your hidden [2] Yi Wood (乙) Output star. Here are the roots of your inventiveness and fluid creativity.

This deep imagination is ably harnessed by your [3] Ding Fire (丁) Wealth star. This is the ability that helps you turn grand ideas into practical visions.

Finally, your [4] Ji Earth (己) Killings Star imbues the Gui Wei with a strong dose of common sense. This is the star that helps you keep things real. It keeps you grounded, more down to earth, pragmatic and realistic.

GUI WEI (癸未)/WATER GOAT: HOW YOU PRESENT

The Gui water, in itself, is formless. This pillar has a strong chameleon-like ability to change its outer shape to suit whatever environment it finds itself in. However, in whatever shape it happens to take, there is one outstanding quality of the Gui Wei that will be apparent to all – its genuine kindness.

You will be the first to offer your help to all and sundry, regardless if that help is even requested. Unfortunately, not everyone will be appreciative of these acts of kindness and may even misinterpret the intention behind the acts. So best to be selective about whom you offer your generous aid. Otherwise, you run the risk of being labelled as a bit of a busybody!

GUI WEI (癸未)/WATER GOAT: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

The biggest vulnerability of the Gui Wei (癸未) or Water Goat Day Master is the pull between two polarities. On the one hand, you crave stability. Yet on the other, deep down inside, there is a hard to quell restlessness that pushes you to constantly be on the search for new experiences and opportunities.

You may have felt it all your life – that voice in the corners of your consciousness, insisting, clamouring, demanding that “There must be more than this.”

The problem may be, you have no clue what ‘this’ is. So you try to fill that void with the impermanent things of this world, seeking distraction, instant gratification, some days eager to change, other days succumbing to temporary shortcuts to fulfilment, caught in a web of restlessness that leaves you feeling stuck, jittery, impatient, frustrated and going through the motions while chasing an elusive sense of purpose.

There really is no ‘cure’ for this void. Awareness of this tendency and a willingness to take action when required is the key. Of course, if you are feeling overwhelmed by emotions, please do seek the help of a mental-health professional. Otherwise, let’s talk about learning to channel your passions into something that is useful and beneficial.

GUI WEI, BUT BETTER

But this restlessness can be a gift when it is no longer viewed as a chasm to be filled. Instead, it is an open invitation for you to dive inwards and tap into the Gui Wei’s remarkable self-confidence, creativity and analytical skills. To recognize that there will always be a push-pull between the need for stability versus the hankering for freedom. And most importantly, to realize that the equilibrium between the two needs can only be decided by you, the Day Master.

The Eating God is the key to making the Gui Wei pillar work as it simultaneously produces the Indirect Wealth and controls the aggressiveness of the Seven Killings. This Eating God can be accessed through a life crammed full of purpose. Here’s the crux of the matter: people frequently think that they should only have one life purpose. But in actuality, as we journey through life, our purpose can change many times over. The ultimate aim is to cultivate a sense of detachment from the ever-present emotions so that the more practical and insightful aspects of this pillar can manifest.

Additionally, learning some meditation techniques can help you calm that raging mind and sift through the multiple thoughts and ideas that are happening consecutively in your brain. I don’t mean to meditate for hours on end! There are quick 2-minute meditation exercises that will be useful when you feel your mind going into hyper-drive.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.

#19 REN WU (壬午)/WATER HORSE: THE GIFT OF THE HEART

Water at the top, fire at the bottom. What do you get? A geyser, of course, which perfectly represents the energies of the Ren Wu (壬午) pillar. Impulsive, impetuous, impatient, and oh so passionate!

Most of all, the Ren Wu (壬午) or Water Horse Day Master is a creature of the Heart. Whatever you do – be it love, friendships, business or career – you pour everything you have into it. No holding back!

REN WU (壬午) / WATER HORSE: OVERVIEW

You, the Ren Wu Day Master, are like a gushing hot spring, filled with passion, intelligence and creativity. But most of all, the distinguishing trait of a Ren Wu is how much you value your personal relationships.

While typically calm and unruffled on the surface, like the geyser that will blow up at any time, the Ren Wu Day Master can be quite emotional. You know how to listen to your feelings. Unfortunately, that cauldron of feelings simmering beneath the surface may very well be your Achilles heel.

I’m going to structure this presentation in a slightly different manner. For the other pillars, I will usually unpack the strengths first. But in your case, for the Ren Wu, let’s get the vulnerabilities out of the way before we delve into your strengths.

REN WU (壬午) / WATER HORSE: VULNERABILITIES TO BE AWARE OF

Ren Wu

On the surface, the Ren Wu (壬午) or Water Horse is a pillar of explosive and conflicting energies. You have Water going head-to-head against Fire, while being controlled by Earth. This creates a dissonance within the pillar itself. Typically, this imbalance manifests as emotional instability.

Now, before you think I am just calling you ‘crazy’, let me elaborate on how the emotional instability could possibly present. Self-doubt and insecurities may very well be your biggest obstacles in life. Which is a pity, given the innate intelligence of this pillar.

Simply put, you care too much. Remember! Personal relationships are of prime importance to the Ren Wu Day Master. And when you care too much, you sometimes can become impatient, unreasonable, bossy, erratic and short-tempered. Why does that happen? Because it frustrates you when others don’t care as much!

Basically, the Water and Fire within this pillar needs to be delicately balanced. When things go off-kilter, that’s when the emotions come gushing out. But when the elements are perfectly in sync… let’s talk about your strengths.

REN WU (壬午) / WATER HORSE: STRENGTHS

The standout skill of any Ren Water Day Master is your ability to meld into any society. Communications is your forte. When the Ren Wu is perfectly balanced, you are a smooth operator. You have an enviable inborn talent which is your ability to talk to just about anybody and influence the people around you.

Seated on your Ding Fire (丁) Wealth star, this is the heart of your passion. This Fire is the reason why you pour your heart and soul into everything you do and every single one of your relationships. It makes you the hard-worker that you are, and gives you the determination to overcome the obstacles in your way.

Ironically, the more insecure you feel, the harder you work! Your Ji Earth (己) Officer star adds to that trait, bringing decisiveness and resourcefulness to a pillar that is already abundant in intelligence.

When all three elements are ticking along in perfect equilibrium, the Ren Wu has some awesome management skills that will serve you well in any business and career.

REN WU (壬午) / WATER HORSE: HOW YOU PRESENT

You will typically present as someone passionate and committed, of course! Unfortunately, people will tend to tread lightly around a Ren Wu (壬午) Day Master who isn’t self-aware. Because nobody knows when the geyser might erupt.

Which leads us to…

REN WU, BUT BETTER

Being Ren Wu, But Better is all about learning to manage how you express your feelings. It’s also about learning to focus on the positives instead of dwelling on the negatives. Finally, there is also a need to learn how to identify and let go of those irrational doubts that continue to plague you, regardless of the success that you have created so far.

The key to creating balance within this pillar lies in the presence or absence of the Wood element. In the study of the 10 Stems, Ren Water and Ding Fire combines to create Wood – your Output element. Therefore, every time you choose to undertake any artistic or creative activities, you are choosing to allow the combination to happen.

So write! Draw! Learn to play music! Take up an artistic hobby! If you’re too shy, there is no need to show anyone the products of your creativity. Just making artistic endeavours as a part of your self-care would be enough.

As always, a final caveat. Without the ability to see the full chart, I must stress that the suggestions in this article are broad recommendations based on a single pillar.
